The Time Machine (2002)
A Very Enjoyable Remake
Having seen the previous movies made based on H G Wells classic book, i would say this is on a par with those if not better and uses many scenes from the original movies(obviously recreated) such as the scene with the clothing shop window dummies changing through the various styles depending how far he goes and the general look of the time machine as well as the world changing around him as he goes forward again obviously using new technology this looks brilliant.
In this remake Guy Pearce takes the lead role and delivers well.On the night he is going to propose to his fiancee she is killed by a mugger and he thinks that he can fix this by travelling back and changing the past, but after this proves wrong he decides to travel forward in time in search of answers but again finds little in the way of comfort until an accident in the future knocks him out and thrusts him forward until his time machine basically runs out of digits where he is found by the people of the time and told of the problems which came before them.At this point in the film pearce goes from a morner to a sort of action hero and when the 2nd species emerge from underground he takes it upon himself to try and help and when one of the people is caught he goes in search of her and is confronted by the controller of the morlocks (jeremy irons) who plays his role to perfection as always and is given the chance to return to his own time and forget what has seen.It is at this point in the movie where pearce believes he has no future in his own time and makes the sacrifice by destroying his time machine to start a new life in the future which as you would expect all works out in end. The end sequence is a tear jerker as pearces house keeper accepts that he isnt coming back and leaves for a new job with his best friend, the accompanying soundtrack is perfect and well crafted and ever musical section fits the scene it represents.
A great film, although many people have said its a mess and a waste of space thats their opinion and not mine so :P
Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987)
A great watch every time!
Two great comedians, a funny script & john hughes a receipe for success.Steve Martin(the big executive) & John Candy(shower curtain ring sales man) complement each other brilliantly in an odd couple/laurel & hardy kind of ordeal which just goes from one laughter fit to another (most notably steve martins f-ing fit at the rental car female).
Although it does have its touching sides the part where Martin leaves Candy at the train station to get his train home to his wife Martin boards his train then realises something didnt seem right & returns to find Candy still sat in the station & admits to Martin that his wife has passed away.I think thats probably when the laughter stops for me.
A great film worth watching every time it comes around on tv(although its usually edited & its not quite the same!).I think it could be considered a classic in many ways the performance from both main stars it classic its just a shame John Candys no longer with us.
Jeepers Creepers (2001)
Did anyone see the movie Duel?
Having just watched this supposed "scariest movie of the last 10 years" i was left thinking why did the makers bother wasting their time making it and making us waste our time and money going to see this, it pure tripe! and thats being nice as well.
A guy and a girl in a car travelling down an empty road (shot so you can see whats coming behind them just in case) then all of a sudden a big vehicle tries to run them off the road (oh dear god no!). Mmmmmmm somebody with a bad number plate in an armoured type vehicle with road rage tendencies following round this car and the driver isnt known (well at least until later at least in this movie).
I couldnt put my finger on it at the time but now i realise its a straight cut and shut job of that old Spielberg movie "Duel" from the late 70's, the one where a guy is being chased across desert roads by an armoured car and he never gets to see who the driver is! Now that was a good movie and much better than this dross fest.
I think there was two creepy bits in this movie for me (note them here 2! and not scary either as the lovely sloogan would try and make me believe!)Number one came when they saw the truck parked the sight of a figure dumping a body down a big hole and him just standing there and looking as they went past to me was a bit creepy. Number two came when the lad found the room of bodies plastered to the ceiling that was pretty creepy and weird as well but that was it!
If you have the best part of two hours to waste on an afternoon or evening, dont waste it watching this, you will regret it and wonder why you didnt just put on a friends video, i wish i had!
Duel (1971)
Only A TV Movie????????
If this was the standard of all "TV Movies" hollywood would be extinct by now, thank the heavens that europe showed one of spielbergs earliest (and best) pieces of what he could do with a camera.
So what did he have in this movie? Well he had Dennis Weaver, Weavers car, the scariest armoured car ever! and desert roads, doesnt seems like a lot to make a 90 minute movie with does it? Maybe not but he made a great one out of it, any new or aspiring directors should wake up and take note of this movie as it proves that even with very little you can make a lot out of it. As many movies go out of their way to scare you and then show you who the baddie is, you never see him in this one and that formula in my book works, spielberg practised the idea on "Jaws" and it worked well again, notice how bad the later ones got when you saw the shark and how boring it got? Well its the old Hitchcock style proving its worth once again with this movie.
Best way of putting this is simply watch this movie, its great, no plot to bore you with, no characters to make you read into their history, just lots a hair-raising bits and scary armoured car, pure class!
Oh yes and those you who who have seen "Jeepers Creepers" and have seen this will note the blatant rip of ideas on the "chase scenes".
Ali (2001)
I Really Liked It!!!!!
This is 1st good attempt by anyone to make a biopic of the greatest boxer of all time, i have seen b movie versions and they are a waste of time to say the least.
This movie however broke that finally and although reviews have been bad and monies taken in america werent as great as 1st expected, it did better here in england im happy to say and im glad it did.
Will Smith plays the leading role to absolute perfection, his timing and everything is spot on, even the boxing scenes were breath taking, whether or not you like the film, Will Smith should not be overlooked for awards that are shortly coming up, if you dont believe this then remember that the man himself Mr Ali said he wanted Smith to play this role and was delighted when he was chosen.
I cant really put into words how much i enjoyed this movie, many people who went to see it did not know much about Ali and what happened to him etc, but for those of you who are fans (like me) this will be a great watch (if only for Smiths performance). For those of you who expect to go out, watch this and learn about the man from this movie do not expect this as its not intended for this, its intended for those of you who know a lot about boxing history and Alis history.
Anyhow thats enough, you make you own opinion im merely voicing mine
Friends (1994)
About Time!
I have never been a big fan of American sitcoms, i think its the dead pan humour of many of them and the fact that most of them were (and still are) the same. Then this came along, different and completely out of character funny as well! Even though the show is now into series 8, the actors are still funny (although some of chandlers jokes need a lot to be desired but i dont care really!) I have no idea when this show is going to finish, ive heard that its going to series 10! Well long my it continue, im just waiting for phoebe and joey to get together hehe
The Munsters Today (1987)
No!!!!!!!
I was intruduced to the original munsters show when i was young and loved it, when this came along and finally reached this country (dont ask me what year!) i watched a few episodes but to be honest i didnt like them, initially the signs were good in my eyes but after 20 odd minutes of two episodes i went back to watching the original series and im glad i did, even the movie spin off of the original series was better. Just didnt feel like the original to me guess you cant improve on what was perfect to start with :)
The Munsters (1964)
kick - ass!
This is where it all began (and in my opinion where is should have ended as it could not have been improved AT ALL!) i was only a nippa when the re-runs of this show were being shown, and recently we found an old video with about 7 or 8 episodes on so i sat down to watch and see if they were as funny as i remember, and to my delight they were even funnier, having just turned 20 and remembering watching this show when i was about 11 i find that i appreciate it more now as more jokes become apparent and the comedic talents of Al Lewis and (the late) Fred Gwynne were top notch, right from the word go this show proves its class, the guitar solo for the title credits and Fred Gwyne crashing through the front door and his face after realising he hadnt opened the door set me crying with laughter and that carried on till the end of the episode when i was faced with it all over again, the plots in the show were great, basically this show rocked, forget the remakes n movies (apart from the 1981 one as this has Al Lewis and Fred Gwynne in it!) Just watch this show as its classic stuff and proof once again that great writing and casting produce gold dust!
The Addams Family (1964)
Pure Class
Having not been alive when this show was originally made i was slightly quick to judge this show when my mum (bless her) tried to get me to watch it when i was about 14, i still watched it n beared it and it wasnt until recently (im 20 now) that i got the chance to see some of the original series and wow! The chemistry between gomez and morticia is infectious to say the least and the other characters make the program complete, the jokes are funny and the set in black and white makes it better as this adds to the "weirdness" of it all. The simpsons may have be americas favourite disfunctional cartoon family, but for the time this show rocks! Even gomez' moustache is slightly lobsided, brilliant, along with the munsters this show is proberbly one of the best "old" shows i have seen, recommended to be seen by all and PLEASE BBC TWO START SHOWING THIS SHOW AGAIN AS I WANT TO SEE MORE THAN JUST THE ONE EPISODE YOU SHOWED A WHILE AGO AND WHILE YA AT IT PUT THE MUNSTERS ON AFTERWARDS TO SHUT ME UP HEHE
Batman & Robin (1997)
Bring Back Mr Burton PLEASE!!!!!
Before this film was even released here in England i had heard reports from a lovely site called aint it cool news saying that this was the worst batman movie ever and one of the worst supposed "blockbusters" of the summer of 1997, having seen it myself i wish to agree with this, having seen batman forever and confesing to liking it i was actually looking forward to seeing what Joel Schmacher had in store this time.
To my horror i discovered that Arnold Schwarnegger was playing Mr Freeze and whilst ok hes not the worst actor in the world he sure as hell aint the best at doing anything other than blowing things up in my opinion, a block of wood with a voice box could do a better job of playing a baddie and thats me being nice. I was however almost happy to find that George Clooney was going to be batman (note the almost bit!) and the role to me did seem to suit him and after the "this is why spiderman works alone" quote appeared i thought well maybe he might be ok, but this quote was proberbly the only good line throughout the film. Chris O Donnell came back as "batboy" i guess he wasnt really much help to the cause and it seemed clooney had to make up for any bad lines he said, almost like an improvisation show and when the line "its the car, chicks dig the car" line turned up i literally cringed! I think proberbly the only person in this film who was actually trying was Uma Thurman as she captured in my opinion the perfect poisen ivy and with a better script, director and cast she might have got an award or something, rather than having nightmares about this flick. Alicia Silverstone as batgirl, well to be honest i think shes hot so seeing her in leather was the only thing that made up for the total direness of this movie, the obviousness of strings and rollerblades were evident in the opening scene with mr freeze and arnies trademark deadpan lines ("you're not putting me in the cooler")came back for the world to see, just to remind us of what hes does best (or worst depending on how you look at it).
Fact of the matter is when Tim Burton made the first two batman movies he did them way they should have been meant in the first place, basically in the way the comics were made, dark, sinister and he did that perfectly, he got the right actors for the job, wrote a good script and captured the atmostphere perfectly, when he finished batman returns he obviously thought it was time to move on as he had done all he could and wanted different projects, then Joel Schumacher appears and make batman forever which as i said i liked, jim carrey as the ridler was a stroke of genius (and also if you think about it no one else could have done it like carrey could they?) Tommy Lee Jones as two face, well the jurys out on that one i think.
Then we come finally to this terrable terrable terrable film, ive heard there is a follow up in progress, please before it happens can someone beg and plead with Tim Burton and pay him whatever he wants to get him to make another Batman movie, as he is needed to put right this wrong doing of a film.
Those of you who like this movie and feel my comments are a bit harsh, thats fine because like everyone else im entitled to my opinions and so are you, i just think (and i dont think im alone in this opinion) that this film should never ever have been made, and if it had to happen they should have gotten a far better result out of it, as i feel this movie has damaged the batman name forever.
Back to the Future (1985)
The Best Movie Ever Made!!!
I think my one line summary sums this film up straight away, i have been watching this movie since i was about 7 or 8 years old and now im almost 20 and im still watching it and loving every minute of it and even though i know whats gonna happen next everytime i watch it, i simply dont care as its that classy a film, this film is living proof that a simple idea, a great script and some good and some slightly unknown actors can make a film that will stand the test of time even watching it now i keep have to remind myself it was made in 1985!!!! I know thats when its set and everything but to me the hallmark of a good film is that no matter when it was made it still seems like new.
Michael J Fox was the perfect choice for this role as he was new and was great at the teenager who got caught up in the middle of everything and had to get his parents together, this film launched his career and rightly so. Christopher Lloyd as the manic Doc Brown, pure class, whoever choose him deserves every award going plus a few medals as well for good measure, hes ace, great as the mad scientist and gets more and more funny as the trilogy goes on. Thomas F Wilson as the bully Biff(what a name haha!) who picks on everyone, including his father to brilliant comedic effect, wish i could have seen more of this guy in bigger films after this one as i think given the chance he could have been one of the big guns in america, but hey what do i know right.
I cannot be bothered going through the rest of this, just go and watch this movie, if you havent seen it, rent or buy it, if you have got it watch it, if you are from another country and cant understand this get it translated ok. This film will be great even in a 100 years time its still great after 17 years out there and there arent many people who dont like this film and theres a reason for this.
