We Have a Ghost (2023)
What a turkey!
This has to be one of the worst films I've seen - I binned it 20 minutes in feeling I'd wasted time I'll never get back. The actor playing Ernest the ghost, should stick to playing 11's adoptive father in Stranger Things. I don't think he's ever been much 'cop' as an actor (pun intended) but he has really sunk to an all time low with this movie. And spare me from 'Stifler's Mom', she's got all of one character to offer no matter what she's in - an old, dried up, obnoxious lech. The plot is peurile in the extreme, the SF effects are old hat, predictable and so stereotypical, in fact the script writers need to take a good long look at their craft and seriously up their game. AVOID.
The Menu (2022)
Pretentious tosh!
What on earth were Fiennes and Taylour Joy thinking of getting involved in a turkey of this magnitude??? I watched the film based upon the consistently high scores it has achieved on critic sites such as this so I'm rather surprised at how appalling I found it - much like the pretentious cuisine portrayed in the film the script was to me equally pretentious and for the life of me I cannot yet work out whether this was some sort of attempt at radical comedy, horror or black humour - there was simply zero to laugh at, only a third rate plot of preposterous proportions!!! Perhaps the film's primary achievement was getting me to see it through to the end, all the while wondering what amazing plot twist was going to make wasting almost two hours of my life worthwhile!
The Drowning of Arthur Braxton (2021)
Pretentious tosh...
Dear oh dear! Very disappointing indeed. This film really doesn't know what it wants to be - one minute it's all teenage angst, then it's coming of age, modern mystery, Victorian ghost melodrama, morality lesson about the dangers of drink... and probably a few more besides. It starts confusing and ends just as bad - the key character and hiss arch protagonist suddenly change attitudes 180 degrees but it is never properly explained why. Despite the negatives though I must say it was well cast, well shot and well directed - it's the story line which lets it down so badly. About the only thing I enjoyed were the location shots in the old, abandoned swimming baths which I believe to be in Manchester - I well remember learning to swim in a near identical baths in Bury.
