Spaceman (2024)
Something New
People are bashing on movies because it's like every other movie, but when something new comes along they bash it because it isn't what they expected. This film was truly new and fascinating to me. It's a mashup of Gravity with Sandra Bullock and Enemy with Jake Gyllenhaal. It's a story that just so happens to take place in space and about a failing marriage. It's full of symbolism and character development. I love that it shows the story rather than telling it. I enjoy films that leave a lot up to interpretation and this film did just that! It is not an action packed, star riddled, explosion mania. It is a simple story about trauma and the effect that can have on relationships. Give this film a view with no expectations and see what you can take away from it.
The Midnight Club (2022)
A bit disappointing
I had high hopes for this show as I am a big fan of the other TV Shows in this universe. I tried to go into it recognizing it probably won't have the exact same feel as the others since it clearly has a Breakfast Club meets Drink the Kool-Aid vibes.
I think the show had a lot of potential but it's downfall was the pacing. Not enough happened in the 10 or so episodes. There is no real conclusion. Flanagan made the show with the intent of a second season and I think that was its downfall. There wasn't enough material for a second season. Especially after watching Haunting of Hill House. They delve into so much in that show and the pacing is incredible. The Midnight Club just didn't hit the mark on that one.
Not only that but the characters were unlikable at first. Anya was so annoying at first that my husband and I actually stopped watching. We came back to it several months later and I ended up liking her character. That switched with the main character, Ilonka. I honestly found her character very frustrating by the end. She is presented as being so smart and clever yet makes mistakes that really doesn't make sense. I think her character just wasn't written well. There had to be some kind of climax at the end of the show and they used her to get it but it cost the character her any likability she had left (in my opinion, anyway). I wish they had done her a little more justice as I could see what the potential was.
Basically, if you like the Flanagan universe and you're thinking about watching it- go for it. Just know it is slow, unfinished and does not live up to the other shows you would be familiar with.
Veronika Decides to Die (2009)
Not What is Advertised
This movie was not what I thought when I read descriptions of it- which leads me to believe this is why this film got so many bad reviews.
This movie is a romance/drama about cherishing life. I think there are movies out there that have a similar takeaway but did it better. Nevertheless, this film is still touching and heartwarming. This was not the "psychological thriller" I anticipated and I'm ok with that! There is a twist or two in the film but nothing unpredictable.
I enjoyed the film for what it was and the story it told, but I probably wouldn't watch it again. I imagine it has a big impact for those who have struggled with suicide themselves or a friend/family member who has. Worth a watch if you enjoy romantic dramas!
Willy's Wonderland (2021)
Cult Classic Vibes
I don't know how people review movies poorly when they go into them knowing what kind of movie their about to watch. This movie is a good kind of bad. I don't think it's as good as Army of Darkness, but it certainly has that appeal. I've noticed some people are upset because it seems the movie is not utilizing Nic Cage's abilities as an actor. I quite disagree! Give the movie a watch: cringe, laugh and accept it for what it is. Afterward, Google an interview with the director about the movie and Nic's involvement. It's hilarious. I love this guy! Not afraid to try something totally out of left field. I think that's why people like Nic Cage movies- he's a wild card! You never know what you're going to get.
Greener Grass (2019)
You love it or you hate it
This is one of those films that you either love or you hate. I personally loved this movie as I think it is more clever than it appears on the surface. There is a lot more imagery and symbolism than you may see the first watch through (I've watched this movie about 5 times). In fact, there are subtle details that point to some pretty crazy theories.
If you decide to watch Greener Grass, just try not to take the movie too seriously and enjoy it for what it is: satirical surrealism. I think this movie makes a fantastic point of what culture is like today.
I also think it helped that I watched a lot of surrealist films before watching this one (ex. Vertigo, The Red Shoes, Don't Look Now etc.). Understanding that the point of these films is not logic but using surrealism to get a point across.
It actually disappoints me on how little viewers seemed to enjoy and appreciate this film. I think it it may be one of my all time favorites! Give it a shot and try to look at the deeper meaning of it as well as the hilarious and clever Easter eggs they've managed to squeeze into this film.
The Menu (2022)
Meats Back On the Menu Boys!
I regularly check reviews before watching a movie. I knew going into it that it's an either you love it or hate it kind of film.
Most of the critics have some preconceived notion going into the film that it's going to be this or that, but you just can't do that with "art films". Which is exactly what this is. Who goes into American Psycho thinking "this is just a movie about a serial killer" and comes out at the end thinking the same thing? Absolutely no one (that's smart, anyway).
You can't think about this film as a logical horror/thriller, art isn't always logical. The Menu plays on themes of life- what is the point of living if your joy has been sucked out? If you no longer enjoy what you're doing in life? This is something all the characters have in common.
The acting, directing and sound design was fantastic. I appreciate this movie for what it is- if you don't, I think you just don't see the deeper meaning. I would 100% watch this movie again.
Give it a watch and be open minded. Why not?
Cosmic Sin (2021)
Don't Bother
One star.
I never write reviews. This movie is so bad it needed one. Literally watch any other Bruce Willis film- I guarantee you'll see more of him in the first half hour than you would watching this mess. Guess they couldn't afford for him to have much screen time.
Absolute total garbage. The acting, plot, sound (the music pretty much never fit the scene) and the set was all a cringe fest. It's fine if you're going into it with the idea that it's going to be a bad movie. Actually, scratch that. My husband and I knew it was going to be bad and we could barely stand it.
Find something else to watch.
