Starfuckers (2022)
With some ideas but......
This very short little film, trying to showcase the same old issues, doesn't seem to have much new to offer.
The last few performances, with their bombastic lines and exaggerated tones, lack some design and beauty.
The direction of the story is certainly not obvious, and one could say that it lets fly with little obvious storytelling. The meaning expressed is shown through a relatively new form. But that's where it ends.
Some say this is the real Blonde Monroe, but I'm not so sure. Blonde Monroe has its own problems, but it can't be replaced. Maybe it is a short film discussing almost the same topic, and there is some impact, but not much.
Armageddon Time (2022)
A special movie
Armageddon is a very special movie. I was expecting it to be a movie like 2012, where the real end of the world is filmed, so before watching it, I was very curious and didn't think much of it, because I thought it would be hard to make anything new out of the end of the world.
However, as the movie progressed, the collapsed buildings I expected to see, the people running and shouting, never appeared.
I did not see myself in the little white boy, he did not listen, very rebellious. He was fraternized with the black kid, but it was obvious that the latter was leading him astray. He does drugs and takes him to escape from the group visiting the exhibition to play elsewhere. Instead of going home he goes to paul's cabin and they listen to music that is far away from them and fantasize about a different life.
They childishly think they can get away from it all with a computer, but instead they fall into the hands of the police.
I really like the scenes where the conflict is depicted. Paul wants something to eat but is not allowed to, the family is in chaos, the parents are shouting and criticizing, and everyone is acting very natural and real. The film perhaps succeeds in this, it has authenticity and can resonate with the audience.
The end of the world is a metaphor, paul is brought home and he actually picks up a book to study. For black kids, staying in jail is the end of the world. This point actually implies the issue of race, too.
For paul, the death of his grandfather is a huge blow, which is the first layer of the end of the world. Secondly, it is his farewell to his best friend. Third, the end of the world means that his maturity, the rebellion and innocence in his heart, the bravery and fearlessness and self-righteousness of a teenager, has completely collapsed.
Of course while Paul was reading the book, the family was watching the news. The appearance of the Trump family in the foreground may not have had much political meaning. But the appearance of President Reagan, and the family's distinct political outlook, is suggestive of the reality of a possible apocalypse. Of course the deep political moral behind this I do not know very well.
The film may also tell us that we can't change anything. We can't decide the direction of the times, we can't decide who will be president. We can't improve the situation of others, we can't change the persistent problems of society. We can only change ourselves and look forward to a better future for ourselves. Let go of illusions and be realistic. The end of the world is like the shattering of a dream, the end of all things.
He liu (1997)
A masterpiece
This movie called The River seems to be underrated. The pace of the whole film is very slow, which may make some people feel unacceptable, but for me on just right, because such a pace, this over and over again on the fixed shots of ordinary life scenes, which allows people to chew slowly emotional cohesion, and finally converge into a river, slowly and at the same time profoundly flow into the heart of the viewer.
We can see the son's struggle for neck pain, we can see the old man's thirst for sex, and when he touches someone's head, he is ruthlessly rejected, so he and his grandson end up together in this place of venting their desires.
There is also the wife's desire, which is obviously suppressed. We fell into contemplation with the heavy rainstorm outside the window. The pouring rain seemed to be a mockery of this unbearable family, a mockery of this uncontrollable world. We had no control over the rainstorm that penetrated the house, and we had no control over our sexual orientation or our husband's love for us. We can't control everything, and in the end we can only give in to our hearts and desires, just like grandfather and grandson making love together, unethically approved yet our own choice.
The river is more suggestive of the true face of this society, which is a pool of stagnant water. The pain that cannot be removed, the desire that has nowhere to rest, the suppressed feelings that can not be exploded, can only suffer in silence. At the end of the day, the old man who lusted after the flesh of young men met his own relatives and declared his principles with a slap of anger, but could not change any status quo. Later shots, we see life seems to be back on track, yes, that is like the elephant inside the room, existing, but not allowed to mention. At the end, Kang stands under the wind, under the early morning sun, and I thought he would jump off the building, but did not. The movie ended, without a soundtrack, depressing, but worth remembering.
