Get Out (2017)
Get Out more like Get In
The joke in the headline might not make sense to some of you but whatever. Anyway for Jordan Peele's debut film this was phenomenal. The acting, story, characters and setting are all top tier and create the perfect atmosphere for this kind of film.
The Good:
To start off I have to mention the story. It's an interesting mystery that slowly unveils itself as the film progresses which helps increase the tension and stress of it all. Not to mention how it's tightly packed with deep symbolism that you probably won't notice on a first watch and it doesn't take away from the story at all. The acting is also phenomenal. Some of the most impressive acting I've seen in a while. All the characters are just filled with personality and this film definitely wouldn't have worked so well if it didn't have the tight engaging script that it did. And something I don't mention often but the sound design and mixing at some points actually made me audibly gasp.
The Bad:
Not much to say here but whilst I think the mystery worked very well I felt some moments were quite predictable. And also some moments did feel a bit cliché.
Overall Get Out is a must watch have for anyone remotely interested in it and is almost perfect especially for a debut film.
God of War (2018)
Read it, BOY!!!
God of War continues to give reasons to buy a PlayStation. For reference I have not played any of the other GoW games however I know the basic story. I think it delivers just enough to be content but still keeps enough from you to be excited for the sequel.
The Good:
I have to start with the story. In my opinion the second greatest thing in the game. It's so fun to travel between some of the 9 realms on your quest to Jötunheim. But what really makes the story work is the characters, in my opinion they are the best bit about the game. The relationship between Kratos and Atreus is just so engaging and relatable. And it's lots of fun exploring or continuing the story to meet new characters that are so fun and full of personality. The gameplay is fun and evolves over time with new upgrades and weapons so it doesn't get stale and it provides enough challenge to be fun but not annoyingly difficult. And I have to credit the incredible camera which shoots the whole game in 1 shot similar to the film 1917.
The Bad:
This game does very little wrong but there are a few gripes I have. Lots of the side missions feel useless as they mostly provide gear that you don't need and will not use. There are also 2 realms that are optional and I feel were under utilised and I felt like they were just gimmicks that were just annoying. Also I think some of the RPG elements when it comes to upgrades and gear felt slightly unnecessary and I didn't really care for those systems.
Overall God of War is one of the best triple A title out right now. It's so fun to see glimpses of Norse mythology and it's also fun to spot the differences between this world and actual Norse mythology. Overall this is a must play for PlayStation owners and now since it's on PC hopefully more people will be able to play this masterpiece.
Ghost of Tsushima (2020)
Can they pull it off?? Yes they Khan
Sorry for the bad pun in the title but I just had to. Anyway, Ghost of Tsushima is probably one ofthe worst PlayStation triple A title I've played. But that just goes to show how good these games are. I would give this a 7.5 if I could because I have a few problems but overall this is great game that just falls short in a few places.
The Good:
First of all there is the story. The story in the this game is engaging, interesting and honestly kind of unexpected. I had a good time following these characters and their journey to send the Mongolian Empire away from their island. Whilst I do have some problems with the story I think overall most of the story missions are fun and interesting there are a few problems I have with them that I will get to later. The gameplay is also something that was just so enjoyable. This game really scratches that itch of wanting to become a Samurai and save your people. Reminds me of Samurai Jack, going around and protecting the people of the island and dispensing justice on evil. The combat was fun and challenging without being overly difficult. I also enjoyed the divide we see with characters later in the story and lots of the side characters are fun and interesting with their own stories with lots of twists and turns. As well I felt the villain was very well established and really had a terrifying screen presence. And not to mention this game looks beautiful, sometimes I would be going around the open world just admiring how good it looks. So whilst some of the graphic fidelity might not be as good as God of War or The Last of Us Part II, the lighting and ambiance really made up for it.
The Bad:
Now for the bad. Let's start with the story issues I touched on earlier. I think the problem has less to do with the story itself and more to do with the lead character. For me Jin Sakai fell kinda flat. Whilst I enjoyed his character arc and was interested by the tough decisions he had to make, he felt very bland. He was always very monotone and very rarely expressed much emotion which then hurt the story for me. Also lots of the side missions just feel bland a tedious. And the gameplay can kinda just get bland and repetitive after liberating camp after camp. And a lot if voice lines were just repeated time after time and it kinda got annoying.
So I overall I think this game is a bit of a mixed bag but is something definitely worth it if you're interested. However if you are just looking for a triple A single player story game, there are better options.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Thor: Like and Thunder
I enjoyed Thor: Love and Thunder. Some people act like it is worse than Thor 1 and 2 but it really isn't that bad, it is flawed and slightly underdeveloped but a fun nonetheless.
The Good:
I generally liked this film. I thoroughly enjoyed some of the visual jokes in this film and thought Taika Watiti as Korg, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie were the standouts when it came to the comedy. As well as I thought some of the cameos were very fun. Not to mention Christian Bale as Gorr was really interesting and thought his origin was very interesting but I will talk more about him soon. And I think some of the costumes were quite good as well. As well as the main theme of love was thoroughly explored in a fun and interesting manner.
The Bad:
I liked this film but that's not to say I wasn't slightly disappointed, especially after the gem that was Thor: Ragnarok. I also felt that when it came to Thor's main costume in the film that it wasn't great, it wasn't as awful as it looked in the original posters but it still wasn't great And don't get me started on the helmets. For some reason they decided that instead of having practical helmets, instead they just used CGI and you can really tell, it does not look good. And I was very disappointed by the lack of Guardians of the Galaxy in the film as Thor joining the Guardians was one of the most interesting things to leave us at t he end of Endgame and they were almost not in the film. I thought Gorr was a very interesting villain and I thought he was even more interesting than Hella from Ragnarok but I still think Hella was a better villain as Gorr just wasn't explored as that well as he could of been. I thought his introduction was really good and so were all his scenes but I think he just wasn't in the film enough. As well as I felt they were missing a whole third act of the film and the final battle felt a bit weak until the end of it.
Overall I think if you are fan of Ragnarok then you will enjoy it enough but it definitely isn't as strong as Ragnarok in any of the aspects of the film. However it is still a fun watch.
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
So preoccupied with wether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.
Out of all the films that have came out this year so far, this is by far the worst. It doesn't have anything to it, it's just so surface level and hollow that you can't help but not care about what's happening, hell I even started getting sleepy watching it.
The Good:
Not much unfortunately which is a real shame as they had such a great concept of dinosaurs in the real world and did absolutely nothing with it. However I will say that the CGI and practical effects are really good and so are lots of the dinosaurs designs.
The Bad:
There is a lot wrong with the script. For me one of the biggest things is that the movie doesn't seem to care about dinosaurs in the slightest. The film is so incredible unfocused and bland that you just don't care. The returning OG's aren't interesting and don't really feel like the same characters with the exception of Ian Malcom. Hollywood is so saturated with nostalgia bait and it's rarely actually good. Not to mention in previous Jurassic films they have a clear indication of who the big bad final boss dinosaurs is but in this one who have barely any clue until it appears for the final fight. Not to mention the final fight lasts about a minute and nothing happens in it, there is no stakes or intensity amplified by the fact that you don't care. And also lots of the cool new dinosaurs are in the film for about a minute before they disappear and we never see them again.
This film is not one I would recommend and is definitely not worth your time, money or attention. Anything this film does, any other Jurassic film does better.
Outer Wilds (2019)
In the quiet shade, across old bark, in the ancient glade, it's always dark
Outer Wilds isn't just the best mystery game I've ever played, it isn't just the best space game I've ever played, it isn't just the best first person game I've ever played, it isn't even just the best 3D game I've ever played, for me it is the single best game I have ever played.
If you have not played Outer Wilds yet, what are you doing, play it. Outer Wilds is built on mystery and is a once in a lifetime experience so avoid anything to do with the game, sit your butt down, grab a controller and start playing.
The Good:
Where do I even start? This game manages to balance story, character, gameplay, mystery and discovery all in its run time of about 10-20 hours depending on how smart you are. It's such an interesting mystery to uncover and it's told in a non-chronological order making it even more gripping. And since it is open world then you can uncover the mysteries of the solar system in almost any order and still have it be coherent and make sense. Not to mention the game looks great as well. And the soundtrack, don't get me started in the soundtrack. Andrew Prahlow does such a good job with the music in this game. The music is so emotional, eerie or warm. The music really creates the mood of each area. The game hosts 6 planets to explore each of them bringing something new to the table and changing over time. Speaking of time, it's one of the most important things in this game. It can be your greatest ally or your worst enemy. But most importantly you must take your time, as rushing through this game is not only difficult but also just gives you a worse experience. And also if at any point you are stuck on a puzzle and don't know what to do. Do NOT search it up, just leave the area and keep playing and soon enough you will find a solution.
The Bad:
The only bad things about this game are: the pace starts to slow down a bit once you get close to the end and it's lack of replay ability. Thats it.
Do over all Outer Wilds is a once in a lifetime game and one of the greatest of all time. I could say so much more about this game but it's hard to talk about it without spoiling it, and this is a game where you must go in as blind as possible.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Sam Raimi, I've come to bargain.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness left me disappointed. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either, it was just in frustrating middle. As a fan of Sam Raimi's previous super hero films and a fan of the multiverse concept I was highly anticipating this film. But it just left me dissatisfied.
The Good:
Now don't get me wrong the film has its merits. For example Sam Raimi's directing is top tier as per usual and the CGI isn't anything to write home about but it's still good nonetheless. Lots of the characters were fun to see again and some characters were fun to see for the first time. And there were some really fun cameos even though they were a bit shallow.
The Bad:
But it still has its problems. And I believe the biggest problem with the film is its writing. Some of the dialogue feels clunky and character motivations ring hollow. There were clearly places they wanted to go but just didn't care how to get there which leaves the story feeling messy. The villain was interesting but they were also a bit stupid as there were easy ways to avoid conflict and the explanation just didn't make any sense. And cameos whilst they were cool they were also completely unnecessary and didn't do anything of note.
I could go on more but I probably shouldn't. If you're interested in the MCU then you should watch it as it is on Disney+ now but don't get your hopes up.
