Whitstable Pearl (2021)
Wonderful Whitstabke
We love Whitstable and this series does the town justice in its cinematography and location setting .. The stories stay true to the books for the most part and the acting is great. Kerry Godliman is excellent as the lead and all the regular supporting cast do a fine job. This is light drama with a different situation in each episode , but also several stories running through the whole series. Obviously , it's great that they use real locations along the Kent coast including Tankerton , Margate , Dover and Herne Bay , but the real star is Whitstable itself , which is such a lovely town and they do highlight the problems of Outsiders from London inflating the property prices by buying up houses for holiday rentals etc , which is totally justified and is pushing local people out of their own town
All in all , it's a great series you can easily binge watch.
The First Omen (2024)
Loud and disjointed
I don't understand all the great reviews for this movie. It's not sure in which direction it wants to go , so ends up being a very loud and bloody mess. The opening scene where Charles Dance gets half of his head removed but still continues to function is absurd , and there are many similar scenes where you just sit there and go .. WHAT ??? . After the car crash , Margaret acts like she is auditioning to be in Michael Jackson's Thriller Video. And what on earth is a fine actor like Bill Nighy doing in this ?? They must have paid him a fortune , although he does his best with what he's given. The film tries a bit too hard to shock and in the end some of the gory scenes are just laughable.....very disappointing.
Poor Things (2023)
What was that ??
Now , I'm as broad minded as the next person , but this film actually repulsed me in parts. I knew my mind was going to be challenged as I had seen the trailers and had read some reviews , but I was so disappointed, as the story just seemed to be that this girls brain found herself in a woman's body and it was just about pleasuring herself with different fruit and then with as many men as she could find around the world. I just found it a bit degrading and unceasingly about the graphic sex. Emma Stone gives a remarkable performance in a role that you would never have put her in with able support from Mark Ruffalo. The film looks wonderful and the cinematography is great
It just wasn't for me.
Bill (2015)
Brilliant fun
The Horrible Histories team have made a cracking film...very British with some great word play and innuendo. The acting all round is superb as we've come to expect , with each actor playing multiple parts. A proper story with some great twists and sub plots. Should not be compared to Monty Python as the delivery and storytelling are completely different and the target audience is also different.
Although there is one little nod to Life Of Brian when the guards invade a house.
I watched all of the Horrible Histories TV shows with my kids as they grew up and loved every minute , and this story is easily as good , packed with gags and historic detail. If you haven't seen Horrible Histories , you really should catch up with them on the IPlayer.
The Miracle Club (2023)
Wonderful heartfelt movie
I thought this movie was beautifully done. I've been to Lourdes and seen the hope , desperation , sadness and belief in people of all demographics. The film is a drama with some comedy added , but it's a great character study with a story that gradually unfolds to reveal sadness , anger and regret amongst most of its cast's characters......and , oh my , what a cast !!! Maggie Smith was excellent, and Kathy Bates too ......I loved Laura Linney in Ozark , but wondered what she was doing in a little Irish independent film about Lourdes , but she was superb as the estranged daughter returning to her home town after 40 years in USA . Stephen Rea was as reliable as ever and the supporting cast were also top notch .....it may have been a little slow for some but at 90 minutes the film never outstays its welcome ..... I loved it.
Funny Woman (2023)
Brilliantly done
This period comedy drama from Sky is absolutely fantastic. Mixing old film with original content it looks great and the attention to detail is amazing. Gemma Arteton is superb in the lead role and steals every scene she's in , but the supporting cast are also great with some very well known faces. As has already been mentioned, Rupert Everett channels his inner ,Alistair Simm brilliantly , playing a sleazy theatrical agent drawing on , what seems like , a very broad experience of the real thing !!
The series is accompanied by a brilliant sound track with a blend of reggae , Northern soul and pop .....a great story with top notch acting and great camera work.
The Fabelmans (2022)
Below expectations
I really really wanted to like this movie ..one of the greatest directors of all time devoting a movie to his own childhood and upbringing and how he fell in love with movie making !!! It could and should have been a masterpiece but .....and there are quite a few buts .....the movie is about 45 minutes too long , some of the scenes are so drawn out you are begging them to end , some of the more meaty, controversial aspects are just glossed over and the trademark lighter themes are too light and seem like padding....the acting is excellent , especially Michelle Williams as the mother descending into mental torture and the cinematography is beautifully done ....I came out of the cinema feeling I had been cheated of what should have been a brilliant experience.
1923 (2022)
Loved it but where is the English ?
We have done it the right way round , 1883 then 1923 and then we will do Yellowstone. The cinematography, the acting and the screenplay are all brilliant . Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford are great and their dialogue jyst fizzes with pathos and humour...Jerome Flynn is great but why give home a Scottish accent to deal with , either cast a Scottish actor or make him English .. Don't get me started on Alexandra !!!! You've cast 2 English actors for main roles so why not an English actress for the role of Alex ?? Her accent is like something I've never heard before . Cut glass English from a 1940's BBC news bulletin crossed with Australian convict
Just cast an English.
Till (2022)
A moving and disturbing story
If this film doesn't move you emotionally then I fail to believe anything will . And to think it's based on a true story makes it even more profound. Excellent performances from all involved but , surely, an Oscar worthy performance from Danielle Deadwyler , who portrays the part of Mamie with dignity , pathos and a sense of loss that is all consuming. The bravery to even try and fight the scum racists that existed in America was astounding and the pain she must have felt after the jury's verdict must have been unbearable.......it's a hard watch at times and the film is maybe a little overlong , but it's an important piece of film making and a watershed moment in American history ..... I was mesmerised , appalled and dumbfounded in equal measure.
