Gangs of New York (2002)
Great acting by..............
The great acting by Daniel Day-Lewis is what is making this movie interesting. For the rest: a far to beautiful Cameron Diaz for the female role (people surely did not look this healthy in those days), bad special effects and photography, a very slow story, uninteresting development of the script and also very predictable. Halfway I wished it was over. Too bad. Think you could have done better thinking about what part of the important history it covers.
The Postman (1997)
Feelings based on.....
Feelings based on lies can only give false sentiments. What a waste of time to see this movie. The story totally uninspiring leaves me with the question why I did not trust the comments on IMDB concerning this movie. Could have spend my time better in another way than seeing this flick.
The Skulls II (2002)
The sequel (sigh..........)
Absolutely one of the worst sequels I have ever seen. The plot, almost an exact copy. The first 20 minutes, almost a precise replay from the first movie. The characters, lousy and cheap casting. It all ends up so predictable. Leaves me with one question: Have the people who paid for making this movie actually seen the first one ??
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
Techno
My goodness... The last Star Wars: an attack on my senses. Very tired after the movie. Why? Great pictures and sound, astonishing special effects, great views. But they all last for a few seconds until you get squashed into another special effect. It just keeps on going on. And the story. Yes the story. I think you could not even fill a single chapter from a comic book with this story. It is so thin that after the movie I wondered what it was all about. In all: Disappointing !
Peter Brook's the Mahabharata (1989)
A Story About Life
Adapted from the great Indian Epic, The Mahabharata from Peter Brook is a true masterpiece. Not only is the story carefully worked out (remember that the Mahabharat actually consist of many different stories together, each about a specific theme of life), but also the characters are superbly cast. It looks like actually they ARE the characters they are playing. Because you can recognize each of the characters within yourself it is difficult to play just that aspect without having an overlap with other characters. The atmosphere which is created is done in a simple manner, without special effects. Although you can feel while watching it is played inside, the intimate setting gives you the feeling of actually looking into the hearts of the players/characters. Each player got the freedom to express the character according to there own cultural background which gives it the extra dimension to recognize these characters in our daily life and within yourself. It is romantic as well as philosophical, full of depth that even watching the great epic (it takes over 6 hours!!!) for the fourth time it feels like a wonderful journey and a meditation at the same time.
Evolution (2001)
Not bad at all
What can you expect when S.F. and comedy are bought together. Actually I liked the movie because it is very funny. David Duchovny plays 'cool', and he supposed to do so in this movie. But Orlando Jones is really funny. The special effects are OK, the story is OK. Not bad for a night to enjoy.
Wo hu cang long (2000)
Just great
After seen Crouching Tiger for the third time it decided me to write some comments on this beautiful movie. Seen it for the third time and not getting bored, seen many new things along the way. The story is great, like a fairy tale. But never getting childish. The acting is also good. But best to MHO is still the cinematography. The atmosphere which is created by the way of shooting is superb. By creatively choosing the angles to shoot a scene makes it a pleasure to watch, without even following the story. I had everytime the feeling of slowly getting drawn within the story, feeling overwhelmed by the beautiful pictures, colours and atmosphere which is created. And I am not talking about the scenes in the beautiful (Chinese) landscape! Just a masterpiece!
Festen (1998)
Just great
The best Dogma film made!! The cast, the acting, the way of filming and the scenario are just great. A quality movie hardly made these days. The development of the story is in a way that you jump at your chair about what is happening. Dramatic as well as full of suspense. acted in a natural way so when the movie is over you feel like being part of the family. See it.
Gandhi (1982)
Lifestory
A true life-story of the Mahatma.
Passionately told, beautiful filmed and well acted by Ben Kingsley. It makes this a jewel of a movie.
The atmosphere and the tension which is graduately build up during the story makes you leaving the theatre with a feeling of compassion and understanding. Also with a lot of questions like why it has to happen in this way and still is happening around the world in this way. A timeless movie about timeless questions about peace, agression, war, fear and true understanding.
