Why so serious?, 21 July 2008
10/10

This movie is fantastic! It is better than Batman Begins in fact, I would even call this movie a masterpiece. Everything is done perfectly in this movie and with total respect for the comics. The visual effects and action sequences are awesome and the best of their kind. The acting is nearly superb. Christian Bale is terrific as usual. Michael Caine (how can you go wrong?), Morgan Freeman - ironic that Batman has all these unrealistic gadgets but when Morgan Freeman explains what they are it feels like it must be true, Maggie Gyllenhaal - the only bad casting choice who I actually thought was worse than Katie Holmes :(, Heath Ledger. Wow! He was so good in this movie. His laugh and they way he punched out the dialogue (which was also excellent - Jonathon Nolan) just sent chills down my spine and Aaron Eckhart - It is sad that everyone is focusing on Heath Ledger because Aaron Eckhart did an amazing job as Harvey Dent/Two-Face. I cannot give enough praise to the actors (besides Maggie) but the real force behind this movie is Christopher Nolan who is such a visionary and brings Batman to life in the way it should be. You will think Tim Burton who? When you see what he has done with the franchise. I eagerly await the next installment. Note - Parents beware this is not friendly old Batman, this is quite violent!

Long live Henry & Jane Fonda and of course Katherine Hepburn!, 16 July 2008
9/10

The story is of a grandfather (Henry Fonda in his academy award winning role) who forms a bond with his daughter's boyfriend's son, Billy. A simple story makes a good movie in itself but what makes this movie excel is the care and beauty that was carefully used to make a good story an excellent film. The music was beautiful and so was the cinematography but what pretty much makes the film so brilliant is the dialogue and the acting. The dialogue is witty and clever with very memorable lines. It forms realistic chemistry between the characters and was outstanding in this film and then the acting. Henry Fonda was terrific and i was surprised he had not earned himself an academy award earlier rather than later. I am not saying he did not deserve it, he gave an excellent performance and where can you go wrong with Katherine Hepburn. As her last big movie i was surprised this was the first movie i have seen her in. She too deserved her Oscar (bringing it up to 4!) And i was surprised to find how good Cate Blanchett's imitation of her was in 'the Aviator.' Jane Fonda was also excellent summing up an excellent cast!

most underrated movie of all time perhaps, 15 July 2008

How dare people say this movie is bad. You are wrong! I am sorry there is no other way to put it. I do not know what was wrong with this movie. Everything was done extraordinarily well. Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou were perfectly cast as Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu. Jean Reno was good at being what he always is. A cop. Ian McKellen was probably the best as Sir Leigh Teabing and Paul Bettany did a decent job as Silas as well as Alfred Molina who played Bishop Aringarosa. The score was superb and dare i say should have got an Oscar nomination perhaps even should have won! Ron Howard's directing and the camera work are exceptional. I was surprised to find this got second most disappointing adaption from a book to a movie. (first being golden compass) This is unfair. Everything in the book was in the movie except for a few minor details. Nothing huge. I thing everyone did very well and i do not understand what was wrong with the script. It worked fine. It was not outstanding but it was definitely not something to criticize. Do not let anyone else stop you from seeing this movie. :)

takes its place among the best thrillers of our time!, 14 July 2008

This movie was extremely well done. Bruce Willis turned out to be surprisingly good in this movie even though he is well known for his action movies more than these sort of movies. The ending if you have not already found out from someone is shocking and unforgettable. The movie is also terrifying so i do not recommend this movie for the faint hearted! Haley Joel Osmont was simply excellent in this movie. It is a shame that puberty really was not good on him but his performance was impressive and convincing as the boy with 'the sixth sense.' For those wondering what the sixth sense is, well it is the ability to see dead people! Toni Collette was also very convincing as the mother who is left confused and suspicious of her son and his secret. All the other support cast are very good as well. (Look out for Mischa Barton from the O.C.) Definitely a must see. And for those who have seen this see my review for 'The Others' another top notch thriller!

Excellent mix of action and comedy - worthy of the show, 12 July 2008
8/10

For those weary of seeing this movie do not be weary any longer. This is not your typical screwball comedy that ends up falling flat on its face like the Pink Panther and all the others. This is original and witty. The casting is perfect. Steve Carrell as Maxwell Smart! Perfection! Anne Hathaway as Agent 99, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson as Agent 23 and Alan Arkin as the Chief! Yes! Yes! Yes! Terrence Stamp is amusing as the main villain Seigfried. Another good thing is they never run out of jokes. In these sort of movies they usually run out of good ideas after the first half hour. This maintains a high standard through out the film and other films of its kind should take note. It is an excellent spoof of more serious spy films most notably the Bond films.

The Hours (2002)
Fascinating movie - Nicole Kidman delivers!, 12 July 2008
9/10

This movie is simply fascinating and brilliant at the same time. The story on the outside looks bleak, three women in different time periods go through one day where there lives change, each baking a cake for a party. The directing is fantastic from Stephen Daldry who really gets the best performances possible from the actors. The cinematography is beautiful and the music is by far one of Phillip Glass' finest to date. However all these things are nothing compared to the performances by the actors in this movie. Ed Haris was absolutely brilliant. Chris Cooper for Adaptation? See this movie and you will understand! Catherine Zeta-Jones for Chicago? No, no, no! Julianne Moore was amazing in this movie. Maybe her best performance. Meryl Streep will always be the fantastic Meryl Streep and also gave one of her better performances. However, hands down the award for most powerful performance goes to Nicole Kidman. She was so amazing. Her best role indefinitely! Her powerhouse performance as Virginia Woolf steels the show completely. She definitely deserved her Oscar. See this movie. By the end your jaw would have dropped!

Review for Billy Elliot & Billy Elliot the Musical, 3 July 2008
10/10

I saw the musical for Billy Elliot the other night and ad to review it. I had also seen the movie recently so I thought it would be a good opportunity to review both. ********* The Movie: Fantastic! Jamie Bell is brilliant and seems to be keeping that up with King Kong and Flags of our Fathers. Julie Walters is as usual, brilliant! The story is great. The music score was alright. Alright. Stephen Daldry did a fairly decent job with the movie. My only main problem with the movie is how it tries to mix drama with comedy and in some places it does work but in some places it does not. Overall; 9/10 ********* The Musical: Brilliant! There were four boys who were Billy and the one who was performing on my night was terrific and had a very nice voice as well. The dancing was just as good as the movie if not better and the woman who plays Mrs. Wilkinson reminds me of Julie Walters which is of course a good thing. Simply stunning! Overall; 9/10 ********* You should see both!

Better than the first, eagerly await second installment, 2 July 2008

This movie was awesome! After the monstrosity that Ang Lee created in 2005's 'Hulk' I was really not expecting much from this movie but I got exactly what I wanted and more. Firstly for those complaining that the Hulk looks fake from the commercials, don't worry, he looks a lot better on the the big screen and so does the Abomination which is the villain for this piece. This movie succeeds action wise with some really good stunts and lengthy battle sequences to the point where I was never bored in this movie. The only problems i had with this movie were very minor. Firstly, the dialogue was very weak. I like Louis Leterrier's directing style but Zak Penn's screenplay was really weak. I like how they tried to quote some of the famous lines from the TV series eg. 'hulk smash!' but when you are making a live action superhero movie it does not fit. Another thing was William Hurt who I was if no one else was hoping to love in this movie because i think he is a terrific actor. It was not that he was wrong for the role, he was perfect but his acting was almost lazy. It felt like he was acting on the basis of 'oh its a superhero movie, who cares I am probably going to get a big paycheck.' Aside from this everything worked really well. Ed Norton was perfect as Bruce Banner and even though i liked Eric Bana and thought he did a good job, Norton kicks his ass! Awaiting this movie I was prepared to really hat Liv Tyler but she turned out to be better than expected. I am not going to go as far as saying she was better than Jennifer Connelly but it felt like she was giving this movie everything she had which the audience realized and appreciated. Overall, a definite see!

Evening (2007)
Cluttered plot redeemed by brilliant performances!, 2 July 2008
7/10

The movie itself is really a cluttered wedding soap with the usual twists and predictability. The pacing in this movie is also all over the place moving far too quick in some places and moving far too slow in others. If this had been any other movie it would have earned itself a six out of ten. Those six stars would be for cinematography and music and also the way that the flashbacks work very well. The reason reader you will see seven is because of the terrific performances that this movie offers. The greatest ensemble in cinema i believe has been put together for this movie. Vannessa Redgrave (god of acting), Natasha Richardson (always reliable and ironically Redgrave's daughter in real life as well as the movie), Meryl Streep (need i say any more?), Mamie Gummer (a very good newcomer who is Streeps real daughter and plays Streep's younger version), Glenn Close (really needs an Oscar god dammit!), Eileen Aitkins (always creates interesting characters), Toni Collette (your terrible Muriel!), Claire Danes (terrific as the lead. As well as this the two male actors are very good as well, Patrick Wilson as usual proves he is not just a muscular pretty face but can give a very good performance as well High Dancy who was good and making you want to punch him and still extend sympathy! Should see for performances alone!

Pure escapist fun, 2 July 2008

Congratulations Stephen Frears! This movie is excellent. The acting is terrific. Judi Dench is magnificent as usual and Bob Hoskins (who really ought to have himself an academy award by now) really works in this movie, they create perfect chemistry. The movie is funny and most importantly it still manages to retain a heart. The way Stephen Frears creates old London is fantastic and beautiful. The costumes are gorgeous and so is the music. The story itself is funny and the good thing is everyone who appears in front of the camera looks like they are enjoying themselves which really lifts the movie. If I have any complaints, the real footage showing London being bombed did not work like I am sure Frears hoped. Because the movie chooses such a colourful tone it does not mix well with black and white footage. But that is only a small error and the good thing is the Frears learnt from his mistake because he mixes them way better with the Queen. Should definitely see this!
