The Dive (2023)
Impressive performances
Two sisters go on a diving trip. The unthinkable happens and one is trapped. Thereafter everything goes wrong. It really is 'one of those days'. But then most movies stretch credibility, thats what makes them entertaining. I found this movie completely edge of the seat stuff all the way through and really not deserving of some of the poorer reviews on here.
Some research reveals that both actresses had to train to become divers pre filming and much of the action is actually them doing their own stunts underwater. Tom Cruise is rightly lauded for this kind of actor dedication so Laura Krause and Sophie Lowe deserve credit for the same. Diving magazines have praised the movie for it's accuracy, especially in regards to trying to stay calm and the effects of nitrogen. Once you understand this, then the reason for the back story becomes clear.
I would have liked a bigger finish to the movie but it was a great ride none the less. I can see that it lacks commercial appeal because there are none of the usual monsters and CGI but it's a decent tale, well shot and well worth a watch.
Im Westen nichts Neues (2022)
Superb
This movie is an instant classic.
It's brutal, truthful, bleak and emotional.
It takes no sides apart from showing the barbarism and futility of war together with the crass stupidity of the elite who propagate conflict.
Despite this there are a few moments of humour, though still tinged with tragedy.
The version I saw was dubbed into English which unusually didn't detract from the superb performances of all involved.
The trench sequences are heartbreaking and one scene in particular, terrifying where you really do get the sense of what it was like for those young fighters.
Not just a remarkable piece of cinema and literature but also a history lesson for generations to come.
Medieval (2022)
Enjoyed it overall
The movie was a little complicated at first with the different factions involved in the story. This made it feel a little disjointed. But the plot became clearer as it progressed. A great cast starring Ben Foster and Sophie Lowe together with great action sequences, carry some of the budget restrictions and edit issues of the movie.
There are a lot of main characters to get your head around so we don't see too much depth in each character, but there is enough to figure out who the good and bad guys are and understand the political setting of the time. I read up on the subject in advance which helped.
Well worth a watch as long as your not expecting the finishing and gloss of a Hollywood blockbuster, but when compared to other Medieval movies with much higher budgets this one punches above it's weight.
Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)
Great Sequel
If you haven't watched the first, don't watch this in isolation. I really enjoyed the unexpected twist at the start (only makes sense if you've seen the first)
Great family fun. Lots of laughs even if you kind of know what to expect. But Johnson and Black in the same movie? Whats not to like.
No Time to Die (2021)
It's ok
Not the strongest in the Bond series in my opinion. Given the previous four films really broke the mould of the franchise, this storyline feels disjointed with too many ideas mixed up in the pot. I wasn't sure if the previous movies in the series needed this extra 'punchline' as it were. But Daniel Craig and the cast deliver all the expected thrills and spills of a Bond movie and for that reason it's still worth a watch.
Father of Flies (2021)
Clever Pay Off
The story is a little mixed up for the first part of the movie but all becomes clearer in a sudden unexpected way. I don't watch much horror so I found the whole movie very creepy. For a low budget indie it's better than many and I found myself revisiting the story and untangling some of the initial confusion in my mind after I watched it. I jumped a few times and the latter part had me feeling very uncomfortable for all the right reasons. For the most part it's well shot, the score haunting and on the whole the limitations of budget don't spoil the plot albeit it's thread is a little hard to follow at first. Worth a watch.
