Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
That's entertainment.
Fun, fantastical, humorous, outrageous, and a thoroughly enjoyable storybook romp for young and old alike.
Is Indy old, of course, though not to old for one last adventure and he did this one quite well, along with a couple references to getting old and hurting all over. The period sets were very well done, the chase scenes in the obviously souped up and overworked Tuk-tuk were great and loads of fun to watch as they bumped and banged there way thought street, obstacles, staircases and alleyways, The chewing gum fix on the radiator was a perfect fit for an Indy movie.
The actors clicked and Mad Mikkelson was the perfect choice for the Nazi bad guy. Not a big Disney fan these days, but this one knocked it out of the park for sheer entertainment fun.
Joy Ride (2023)
What a comedy is meant to be, funny.
From the start this movie delivered the laughs. The characters were likeable and worked well together. The movie had all that it takes to be a successful comedy, Good writing, good characters, a lot of nonsense and silliness, with a spattering of drama. All of this had us hoping for the best for all the players, and it did. A happy ending for a bunch of friends who all managed to overlook each other's shortcomings and come together as loyal friends.
The comedy was at times raunchy, (so is real life), and may not be for everyone, especially those who grew up in a highbrow bubble. Though for the rest of us, it was refreshing to find a real comedy.
Good job, and no doubt, we will watch it again in the future.
The Out-Laws (2023)
Adam is anything but devine
Wow, Hollywood is definitely on a roll, and unfortunately, it's all downhill.
The talent was there for the most part, with the exception of poor Adam, the lost puppy. He tries to be something, funny? Maybe, though he's not very good at it. In this case the movie seems to revolve around his lack of ability to deliver, while the actors with the ability stand by and watch the train wreck.
If the writers were talented, the movie may have hit the mark, in this case the writers shared the same level of ability as does Mr. Devine.
20 minutes in and it was time to bring down the curtain on this clunker. Maybe the cast just needed a little pocket money?
The Machine (2023)
Let's play find the comedy.
Like most movies the trailer is designed to get the potential viewers to watch. Sometimes the movie is as good as you hoped, other times, like this, it's not.
The movie starts out with stupid in place of funny and that continues throughout the movie. We were hoping that a real comedy would pop out somewhere, it did not, and while we sat watching poker faced, at the very bad acting, poor writing and total lack of humor, we finally looked at each other and agreed that this was another one for the circular file.
The trend in Hollywood when it comes to comedy seems to be the substitution of stupidity for actual humor. Not only does that serve as an indicator that good acting, writing and direction are becoming passe, but confirms the observation that Hollywood and its denizens are fast circling the drain.
A reflection of our society and its dumbing down is wildly apparent here.
Fool's Paradise (2023)
A comedy in name only
So what do you do when times are tough in Hollywood. You gather together a lot of recognizable names, add a very poorly written script, based on a bad idea, throw in some meaningless dialogue and a little media hype, and voilà, you have a movie. A bad one, but these days its what we've come to expect from a Hollywood that seems to be circling the creative drain.
We watched or tried to watch this stinker for about a half an hour, waiting for the movie to emerge from it's cocoon. It did not. It not funny, the characters, with the exception of the late Ray Liotta, were anything but interesting or believable.
There is nothing good to say about this, if this is what Hollywood calls entertainment, they and the actors, actresses, writers and producers should spend a little time in the movie vault reviewing some old movies where writing and acting were still professional and respectable.
Symptomatic of the times we now live in.
Hypnotic (2023)
Hey guys, let's make a movie
It's really not much of a surprise that this turned out to be another hastily prepared attempt at movie making.
A great idea that lacked depth, dialogue that lacked cohesion, and the only mystery turns out to be why it was made.
Someone took the cake out of the oven a little to soon.
Where have all the writers gone? Long time passing. This was an idea that to someone, looked good on paper, or maybe around the table while the group had one to many drinks. Yeah, I've got 5 bucks, how about you guys? Let's pool our money, make a movie, and get Ben to star in it, he's not doing much these days, Then we'll make up this story about people controlling other people simply by taking to them. We can do something kinda like Bill and Ted in the Matrix without the story, the humor or the budget.
Another one timer to crumple up for the trash bin.
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
Non stop killing with no storyline.
By far the worst of the four unless you are a brainless action junkie looking for a fix.
It didn't take much writing for this one, everyone wants to kill John and John kills everyone, the end.
The first three chapters at least had a break where a storyline appeared and there was some dialogue between the actors that added to the story in between fight scenes. The fourth one seemed to be no more than a poorly written attempt at cashing in on the first three. Profit seemed to be the motivating factor.?
On the upside, the action scenes were good, though like drinking, it may have been better served if done in moderation, with a little time left over for a story.
Law & Order: Organized Crime (2021)
It has its moments
While overall we enjoyed watching the show. Some of the writing from one episode to the next ranges from good to poor.
Sometimes it seems a little to much time is spent on the failures of the casts personal relationships, very little of those relationships seem to have any happiness. Try harder, it doesn't help the show.
We enjoy seeing Chris back again and the episodes where his team interacts with the SVU characters enhances the storylines for the most part.
Chris's boss could use a little more acting experience, her character is forced and at times unbelievable. Maybe like a fine wine, she'll improve with age.
The writing is at times a little over the top, and it would seem that the entire criminal underworld in the city would not know who Chri's character really is. The undercover gig is wearing a little thin.
All in all, we'll continue to watch and hope for some fine tuning.
Ghosted (2023)
A sleeper that never wakes up.
We watched, we waited, we yawned, we looked at each other, we gave up.
The description gives you hope that this true lies wannabe would have something to offer, it did not.
He's gone to the farm to help dad? By doing what making 10 bucks at an open air market stall he immediately abandons to spend the day with a woman he just dressed down for houseplant abuse. Could it be any more poorly written? Maybe.
The main characters are supposed to click, they don't. They were like an old v8 firing on two cylinders.
He's helping on the dad's multi million dollar ranch, writing a book he's to busy to finish? Must be the long hours at the farmers market. How does he handle all the stress? Must be tough.
We watched about 30 minutes of this stinker and moved on. This one makes lifetime movies look like James Bond flics.
Florida Man (2023)
Empty promises
The cast is loaded with talent. Aside from that there isn't much that can be said about this bore fest.
The premise showed promise, though the downhill spiral began rather quickly on episode 2 and continued to the end.
The show is more of a soap opera. The script moves slowly and disjointedly, with an occasional spark that you hope indicated something better is to come, but its quickly extinguished.
We watched the first season more for background noise that for entertainment. We won't be watching season 2, if there is one.
Maybe replacing the writers with folks with a real imagination and talent would improve the show?
Just talking about it has us wanting to take a nap.
Marlowe (2022)
This sure isn't Bogie and Bacall.
Liam Neeson, Jessica Lange, nice classic cars, decent sets and no direction.
A stumbling and sometimes incoherent script delivered to the viewer a painfully slow-moving tale of Hollywood debauchery. Indulgence and corruption that the viewer had to put together like a poorly made picture puzzle.
The dialogue was disjointed and at times hard to understand why it was even said , just for filler?
If these was supposed to be a throwback to the glory days of Bogie and Bacall, it missed by a mile.
What's happened to Hollywood is nothing short of sad. Apparently if it's not clad in spandex and special effects, it's no doable.
Here's lookin at you kid.
God's Country (2022)
What the heck was this mess
An absolute mess, the acting was wooden, the actors looked as though they couldn't wait to go home. Thandie's part was what? She was angry, depressed, ungrateful, nosy, and seemingly awash in a sea of self-pity.
A boorish poorly written snooze fest that never got off the ground, then ends with what? Do we tune in to part two to see this rest of the movie?
The best part of the movie was the scenery, a beautiful place, though Thandie's character was out of place. She left New Orleans and moved to an A-frame in a remote mountain canyon with her elderly mom, how did that happen?
If you're looking for background noise or something to put you to sleep, this flick might do the trick.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Now that's entertainment
Great movie, and a great sequel. Well written and acted by all. The characters were believable and worked well together. Drama, a little romance, a little comedy and some great action.
This is the reason we watch movies, to be entertained. From beginning to end we enjoyed every minute. Definitely one to be watched again and again.
The Gray Man (2022)
If you like action, it's pretty good.
Surprising action flick from Netflix. For those looking for depth, move on. This is for actions fans and no more. A simple shoot em up, car chase, kick butt movie. A formulaic action flick, a tiny bit of James Bond, a dash of Jason Statham and a teaspoon of Clint Eastwood.
It didn't "make my day", though it was fun watching.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022)
Another woke stinker
We watched two episodes.............they had their moments, though to few. Captain Pike seems incapable of making a decision and simply waits for someone else to tell him what's best, great leadership.
The actress chosen to play the part of Uhura is anything but likable, and her acting ability was left in the dressing room. She seems to be the main character in the first two episodes, for what reason, who knows. Boring at best.
The writers are amateurish with forced dialogue among a cast that doesn't seem to click.
James Kirk, where did they find this milk toast buffoon. His entrance onto the bridge was anything but exciting. Maybe a few trips to the gym and dumping the caterpillar on his lip would help?
In all fairness, the series does have it's moments when a little action takes over and you forget the forced dialogue and lack of acting ability, though not enough to make this series worth much more than background noise.
Too bad, though no surprise from CBS studios, the home of the hits?
The Northman (2022)
We'll not be watching this again
What a letdown this stinker was. The story was a mess, and considering the big names in this low budget debacle, we expected more. Silly us.
The script was poor, the sets were mediocre and it left you waiting for a real movie to magically appear, it never did.
If you're looking for some background noise while you doze off in your easy chair, this should do it.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
What the heck is this?
My wife and I waded through about 25 mins of this horrid mess, just waiting for a movie to appear, it did not.
Why this poorly scripted waste of talent was labeled in part a comedy / adventure is no more than false advertising.
To say this movie is a disjointed mess is a compliment. We are still trying to understand why it was even made and whether or not the writer was high on drugs when writing it.
A real stinker in every way.
The Lost City (2022)
A poorly written low budget snooze fest.
If you're expecting a great little action adventure, this is not the one to choose.
The anti-hero who has a thing for Sandra and has come to believe he is the dashing, handsome hero of her romance novels, was annoying at best. His incessant whining and limp wrist-ed little boy act was overplayed and did help this bomb in any way.
Brad Pitt showed up just long enough to save our heroine, only to be shot after about a 10 min appearance, He was in the movie to what? Help it at the box office.
The whole movie was slow and slower, with an occasional burst of action that fizzled out as soon as it began.
We have given this one 5 stars only because 4 /12 are not available. I can guarantee that this is one flick we won't be watching a second time.
The King's Daughter (2022)
Entertaining
While not one of those movies that has you on the edge of your seat, or wondering who done it, It does entertain in a PG-13 family friendly way.
The visuals were good, as were the sets, though it is not one of those movies we'll be watching again and again.
It's a good sit back with a bowl of popcorn movie, and escape from the world for a while.
No Time to Die (2021)
Bond movie in name only
What is happening to the movie industry? This was without a doubt the worst Bond movie I have ever had the displeasure of watching.
An aging agent filled with self doubt and what we can assume is his replacement, no more than an arrogant feminist chosen for the part for who knows what reason. Definitely not because of her acting ability, or lack thereof.
The story line was boorish and disjointed, Bond was a sad, lost and lonely man. His team and superiors were inferior at best.
Just another attempt by the movie industry to inflict pain on the viewer while self destructing before our very eyes. Pathetic drivel at best.
Eternals (2021)
Another Hollywood debacle
Lately it seems that movies are not no more than a reflection of Hollywood's' own troubles. Hero's with clinical depression questioning their own existence and all but devoid of happiness.
Angelina's character was there for what reason? To show us all that even superhero's need therapy?
This one belongs on the scrap heap along with the last pathetic James Bond mess.
It barely qualifies for a 3. A waste of time, unless you find flawed characters, poor acting, and melancholy entertaining.
