The Flash (2023)
Enjoyable Popcorn Flick
I was among the lucky few to see this in IMAX in a special sneak screening the Monday before wide release.
Let me start by saying that I had a good time with the Flash. Keaton, Calle and Miller were all outstanding and carry this lighthearted romp. Warner was wise to focus on Keaton in the marketing bc having Keaton back in the cape and cowl is essential to making this whole endeavor work.
That being said, if this is indeed Keaton's last turn as the caped crusader, it will be somewhat of a missed opportunity for not placing him in a full on return to the Burtonverse bc the world/Gotham that Keaton's Batman inhabited was such a defining feature of his iteration of Bats that it feels like a shame not seeing where that exact continuity went.
But, that's another universe/timeline.
The humor and fun that Keats, Calle and Miller inject into this flick are it's super power and the film coasts on their merits, and a few cameos, to its detriment.
Subspecies V: Blood Rise (2023)
Worthy addition to the franchise
The "Rise" portion of the title let's you know what you're in for here. This film serves as the origin story for the primary character of the franchise, Radu Vladislas - once again brilliantly portrayed by franchise regular Anders Hove. Here, the film largely succeeds in humanizing the franchise's monstrous and iconic villain.
I was fortunate enough to catch this on its one day only theatrical release at my local Alamo Drafthouse and enjoyed the post feature making of and interviews with the cast and crew held by Charles Band. In addition to successfully humanizing Radu as a character, I have to also praise the technical aspects of the film as it looks and sounds great- easily sporting the most polished cinematography of the series. I found myself hoping they expound on a couple of the plot points and make a Subspecies VI. Hopefully if another entry is made it doesn't take another 20 years.
