Inside Job (2021)
Why do adult show love references so much?
Sex, Drugs, violence, and references seem to be the four core elements in adult cartoons, and some use these heavily, almost like a crutch to just keep themselves recognized as an adult show.
No adult show is free from these things, however Inside Job only seems to abuse one, and that is references. Constant references to pop culture, other then that the rest are kept at a normal amount.
Another problem I have with adult shows is the fact that they focus on their stoner audience, and I feel like this keeps adult cartoons in their current state.
Inside job wanted to have depth, wanted to say more about everything they were showing. But instead characters emotions were constantly told to us instead of left at being shown.
I still enjoyed this show, I feel like people didn't watch it because "it looks like a Rick and morty clone" but it really does stand out to me. I think it's important to have a show like this, I just wish more people saw it.
Harley Quinn (2019)
It was good at first.
I really enjoyed this show at first, I feel like this show was a good step forward for DC writing Harley Quinn like her own character instead of a girl version of Deadpool. I'm the first season she earned everything she wanted, but she also pretty much always depended on Ivy to save her ass. Also the fact they kissed got spoiled for me so when I was watching the show, I was expecting them to build up their relationship. But for some reason Ivy got into a relationship with Kite man? I think this is really when everything started going wrong. All the pieces were there for them to put Ivy and Harley together in the first place. Harley was the only person Ivy felt like she could trust and talk too, and Ivy kept saving her so I thought they were trying to show Ivy having a crush, and I really thought that would happen when Kiteman kept trying to hit on her. I thought we were going to have a moment of Ivy going "dude I'm gay" but instead she starts the healthiest relationship we see throughout the show? And since they want Ivy and Harley to get together, they could have done literally anything thing else, but instead they make Harley a home wrecker right before they get married. Cheating is never how good relationships start and it left a bad taste in my mouth, especially since they kept pushing them as true love.
I enjoyed everything else otherwise, but I also feel like this show could have been more complex. I love watching a fun little show with a group of assholes, but you can dive into feminism and Harley's horrible relationships with joker with more then a few buzzwords. The depth of things always seemed shallow and never really explored.
I just wish they didn't add kiteman, they had all the pieces to make a good relationship.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
Would have made a better series
The world, the story, the emotional moments, everything is here but it all feels so rushed. It really feels like I watched an entire series at hyper-speed. I can follow the characters and their relations but I really wish they took more time to build them up and focus more on the two main girls. Also I really did not like Sisu, her humor felt really forced and out of place in the world, and while she is the last dragon in a world where they have been presumed dead for years, I get "out of place" is the point but for me it still felt off.
Especially since one of her last moments was seeing her family sacrifice themselves, I don't understand why they kept her hyper and peppy and hardly jaded by her traumatic situation.
There was one scene where everyone was Sharing how their family's were taken away, I felt for the characters, but due to the pacing of the movie it felt like they were happy one moment, sad the next, then happy again.
I feel like this movie had the same problem as Wreck it Ralph and Frozen. All these artists at Disney are amazing and great story tellers. But they seem to have so many ideas and too short of a time to truly put them together. I really hope they can take all these great ideas and put them into a series, because I feel these artists can truly flourish that way.
Onward (2020)
I thought it was great!
Ive seen a lot of harsh criticisms towards this movie and I really don't understand it. This movie is not trying to say the old ways are better and technology is bad, I don't think it really leans one way or another, and there are multiple scenes where they show the nuance of both and how they can be useful.
It's a simple feel good movie about family, and that's what it does best.
Also I think it was justified for Ian to let Barley see their father instead of himself. Barley was the one who had a relationship with their father, therefore it meant more for them to reconnect one more time, then for Ian to try and build a relationship in the short moment they would have had together.
Luca (2021)
Simple and sweet movie
The main issue I have with Luca is that Ercole doesn't get the punishment he deserves. He not only harassed them the whole movie, but literally tries to kill Luca and Alberto multiple times and for some reason the only thing he gets is pushed into a fountain? I understand they're kids in the movie, but it's still feels very unjustified.
Also it's never really clear why his mother specifically hates the surface so much? We can see they do try to kill him, but from how strict she was about it I thought it'd be more personal.
And while it is a simple story about being yourself, I can see why people read it as a coming out story. Especially since it's mainly about having to hide yourself and having what you are conflict with everything you want to do.
But I gave Luca a 6 for the fact that they decided to stylize it different form the other Pixar movies. I love all the different textures and wacky shapes they used, I'm a sucker for stylization and I think it helps make a movie way more memorable when it can pop out from everyone else trying to be realistic.
Encanto (2021)
One of the best things Disney's made!
This movie is so well written and very thought out, I really like the direction Disney is taking with their story telling, I think it's important to have stories that lay out complex problems like existentialism and generational trauma in a very clear and understandable way. It's also nice to see relatable and very human female characters, and Encanto really shows how much Disney has learned from their previous works.
It's also refreshing to have a story with POC characters that are able to just have fun, I feel like so many POC centric stories usually only focus on the race an culture of said characters and explores nothing else.
I've seen this movie three times, and each time I was right there with the characters and nothing ever seemed to get old. I really hope Disney continues in this direction!
