Regarding Billy (2005)
Well worth viewing
This was a sweet movie and refreshing in so many ways. Billy's best friend, Dean, leaves for the armed forces and soon after, Billy must return home and dedicates himself to raise his mentally challenged younger brother. The affection he has for the brother is very loving and caring. It's obvious there's an emptiness in his own life and he dreams of his friend. When Dean returns from the war, injured Billy's loving ways continue. It's quite refreshing to find a movie filled with so much love and no gratuitous purient scenes. It reminds me of a smaller version of "Big Eden" and shows that gays can make a loving, respectable family.
Boy on a Dolphin (1957)
Visually stunning underwater scenes
One of those movies from childhood you remember as an adult, if for nothing else then for the brilliant colors and underwater scenes. Although this may not be available on DVD as yet, it's a good candidate because of the Technocolor beauty of it all.
Next Year in Jerusalem (1997)
An orthodox New Yorker becomes a man with the help of his cousin
An unusual "coming out" story of an Orthodox Jew who's afraid of doing what might be considered "Unorthodox". He gradually evolves with the help of his cousin, who's turned his back on the family, his heritage, and changed his name. Eventually there's a synthesis and each blossoms into a man of self respect.
