Thinner (1996)
the diet that wont quit
If you wish to compare this film to the book then it wont be as good. If you want to compare this film to other King films then it's pretty standard fare. If you don't wish to compare at all and instead just watch the film (which I urge you to do) then you will be pleasantly surprised. What you will discover is an intense film with great special FX. Mantagna is excellent in a typical Mafia type role and turns out to be the most likable character. The most pleasing aspect of the film is the storyline. It's a simple idea that King has made good. So there we have it. It's good but could be better, but isn't that the same for every one of Kings films?
Living Doll (1990)
Gross, but no cigar
Ten years ago somebody told me to watch this movie. They explained to me that it consisted of a lonely man finding out that the girl he was obsessed with had died. He then decides to keep her rotting corpse at his flat. I could not wait to watch it as I assumed from that brief synopsis there was so much potential for a really interesting movie. Unfortunately all I saw was an interesting idea far from utilize it's potential. Unlike Randall's earlier movie "Slaughter High" I feel this film wanted to be more than it was but fell well short of the mark. On the upside the pure subject matter may keep you interested for the whole movie and the grossness of the decaying corpse is funny, however these are not enough to win over most fans of the horror genre and it is unlikely to win many casual viewers. So the choice is yours. Rent it, but don't expect too much.
Slaughter High (1986)
Laughs Scares and English accents
YES, the plot is hardly plausible and very thin. YES, the acting does range from average to laughable. YES, it has been done so many times before. However what we are dealing with is a film that does not shy away from these facts and pretends to be nothing more than it is. There are indeed some original death scenes and the tension does increase throughout the movie. In addition you are never more than a few minutes away from a gory killing. I urge everyone to watch this film with an unprejudiced eye and see it for what it set out to be; a scary, funny slasher flick with a theme tune second to none.
