Waking Life (2001)

An interesting, psychodelic trip
24 December 2002
A little slow getting into it. I started watching this on a recomendation from a friend, and was at first baffled by the cartoonness of this film. It took me a while to appreciate the philosophy behind this movie, the great and intricate things that it had to say. Overall I am very pleased with the surrealness and existentialism. Thanks to the directors, and everyone involved for a very enjoyable 1.5 hours. Or was it just a moment's dream?

disappointing

What a load of crap. It was worked up to be such an interesting movie in the previews, but turned out to be a disappointing pg-13 politically correct loser.

Hollywood obviously does not want to pss off the arab countries by making them the vialins, remember we need to keep the oil prices down. Instead lets make the Nazis evil. They are all dead, so no one cares. Of course the nuclear adversary is once again Russia (who else?). Cheesy, overdone, boring, are the only adequate adjectives in this case. Oh and lets not forget to make fun of Yeltsin for his alcoholism while we're at it. The Russian president has to speak English, but not the other way around, because after all, America is number 1 right?

There are so many flaws in the movie, besides the overwhelming amount of obscene political correctness. Critical mass of plutonium cannot be handled by nakid hands, besides being heavy enough to prohibit being carried in one hand. Cell phones and PDA working immediately after a nuclear explosion? Give me a break. You would have to shield them with 2 inches of lead for that to happen. Oh and one more thing. After the Israeli military lost a nuclear weapon, you think they would just leave it out in the desert for some idiot to find?

The movie is a joke.

quite interesting

The great thing is tht you never know what is real in the movie and what is imagined. Very well done in that effect. Through this viewer is kept in the dark throughout the movie as it is never clear what is real. Makes you wonder about your own life, perhaps your entire family and friends are also segments of your imagination. The entire thing is an epistemological experiment. I love it.

awful

One of the worst movies ever made yet one of the largst budget ones. A cheesy love story, no effects worth mentioning except for one where the boat sinks. There is one surprise in the movie - the boat sinks. Could anyone have guessed it? Awful soundtrack. There is absolutely no need to see it.

absolutely stunning

This movie is absolutely stunning. Very original in plot, colors, and directing, with a superb soundtrack. It discusses how we are all no more then 6 degrees of separation from eachother. Yet this aspect is only the plot. In reality it adds another perspective on our daily lives. Through Ouisa Kittridge it teaches us how mundane our everyday events are, that we all need something drastic to happen to bring us out of sleepy everyday into a fun, exciting, new being. We are equated to John Kittridge who lives his self involved life not noticing the people around him - not the hippy couple in the park who happen to be artists, nor his kids away in college, not even his wife's true personality. Through Ouisa we are shown how we all look for something new to enter our lives, even a sham like Paul can turn us around, give a new meaning to the mundane. Of course the tango musical theme combined with extensive monologues by Paul forces viewer to dance with and listen into the characters, almost becoming one. (9+/10)
