The Iron Claw (2023)

Slightly hallow feeling movie
26 December 2023
Just saw it with some friends, and I was very much looking forward to viewing this film.

I am vaguely familiar with the story of the Von Erich family, but hadn't known the whole story.

It's for sure a formidable piece of Americana, and true to life tragedy. It speaks to themes of generational curses, toughness, and brotherhood. The film feels like a one-way street for a bit, and it focuses on the deterioration of the brothers mental health as they attempt to chase a victory that is sadly always out of reach.

The film just feels a little flat, and shallow. I desperately wanted more depth from the script. I also could see PTA or Bennett Miller crushing this direction.

It's a fine film. The ending is very sweet and ties it together nicely.

Enjoy!

Redemption is coming
19 May 2023
This season, as most fans know, has been kind of scattered. Characters have felt displaced, the focal point seems it has lost its way a bit. The quaint universe of the shows first two seasons has unexpectedly grown and without much to really love. These new characters have felt un-needed, and several side characters arcs have been seemingly randomized as to which ones we explore.

But what I know and love this show is that you can always count on the fact they won't leave anything on the table, and they will find ways to cleverly redeem everyone.

This episode got back to its hopeful roots. It touched again on its humanity, and did very beautifully.

If the ending of this show is now in sight, I imagine the creators are going to send it out with a bang.

Fingers crossed.

Truly one of the best films of 2022... if not the best
23 January 2023
This film has deeply haunted me. It is deeply beautiful, soulful, and arresting.

The films depictions of depression are raw, and arguably some of the most realistic I have seen in a movie in a long time. This film strikes in it's subtleties. It's beautifully and selectively shot, in its attempts to replay the memories of the main character. It weighs heavy on the themes of fatherhood/daughterhood, and what it means to be enough for those we love.

This is probably gained a spot in my favorite films of all time. It's that good. It's that haunting. It's that unique. I am almost thankful for the experience.

A guilty pleasure film

This film is full of horror movie cliches, but it feels self-aware. It's a yearly rewatch for me. Why? Because there exists some really great pay-offs of horror and suspense in this film despite the usual horror tropes. The characters are not likable for all the right reasons. They are all self-revolving, and selfishly trying to survive by the end of the movie. The violence and gore in this movie are pretty surprising. Some great twists along the way, as well as some great tongue and cheek humor. The fall back drop and anamorphic 35mm look are classic. I believe this is one of Eli Roth's great films.

A Masterpiece. Through and through.
21 November 2022
This transcend your typical sports film. It is a beautiful character study, and behind the scenes look at the gritty business of baseball. The direction from Bennett Miller is perfect as it plays like a documentary, but with aesthetic of deeply touching narrative. It takes a mix of archival footage, as well as thoroughly well paced and acted biopic pieces.

Aaron Sorkin's dialogue is biting, and never dull. It feels so alive and human.

Brad Pitt plays a troubled, yet cathartic portrayal of real-life GM Billy Beane. Jonah Hill and Phillip Seymour Hoffman play their roles well.

This film has gotten better every time I watch it.

A masterpiece.

Genius

A mix of a game show, escape room, murder mystery. Super funny direction from Will Arnett. Season One guests are fun and creative.

It's gut-busting funny. Rooting for twists and turns to watch the guest scramble to improv is so much fun. It's also a ton of fun seeing the guests (and scripted character roles) break character.

Enjoy. Can't wait for season 2.
