The Wheel of Time: What Was Meant to Be (2023)
Season 2, Episode 8
8/10
Imperfect but a far stronger finale than Season 1
6 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Very good episode in my opinion, many upsides and some downsides.

I really liked the intense battle sequences in this episode that was highly satisfying to watch, especially how the whitecloaks ambush the city using a smoke diversion. Everything with Perrin, Uno, Hopper, and Mat was very good, the exact opposite of the Season 1 finale where absolutely nothing happens with them. Uno as a hero of the horn is questionable but whatever he's fun to watch. Perrin killing Bornhald's father sets up his conflict with the Whitecloaks which lasts basically the entire series.

Egwene killing her sul'dam was extremely well done, brutal scene and powerful. Other things I enjoyed included Bayle Domon, Moghedien is genuinely perfect, and the massive fire dragon cast by Moiraine over falme was pretty awesome. It was also great seeing Mat begin to realize his past lives and memories and fight with the heroes of the horn, just genuinely cool, Donal finn plays him very well. I'm glad we have finally resolved the silly conflict between Moiraine and Lan and their actions in this episode are entirely in keeping with their characters.

What I did not like was the fight between Ishamael and Rand. I think it should have been far more epic and intense than it was and while we ended up in the same place at the end of the day it could've felt a lot more earned. It is easily the weakest point of this episode. However, in the books Ishamael 'loses' to Rand I think like 3 times when he's far stronger so it's not totally out of line but could have been done far better than it was. I am also sad that Ingtar was never revealed as a darkfriend and never formally came back to the Light before he died.

I am conflicted about Lanfear as it is true that while she served the Shadow what she wanted above all was Lews Therin which affected everything she did. We will see how this pans out.

This is a far better conclusion than we got in Season 1 and anyone who thinks it isn't clearly doesn't remember how mind bogglingly bad S1 ep 8 was or is determined to hate for its own sake.

The Wheel of Time: Daes Dae'Mar (2023)
Season 2, Episode 7
8/10
Very strong episode sets up the finale
30 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Highly enjoyable episode in my opinion. I really like what they are doing with Nynaeve, Egwene, and Elayne just seems right on the nose and highly enjoyable to watch.

Contrary to what many people are saying I think in some ways they are moving closer to the books rather than the reverse. I'm noticing way more mentions of things like 'bloody ashes' and invoking 'the light' particularly in this episode as well as book accurate aiel sayings and customs. Characterization also seems improved across the board. I liked Lan a whole lot more this episode with the way he was acting and what he was saying seeming far more suited to his character (stoic, serious, and decisive). I also like Loial's monologuing at inopportune times, very much in keeping with Ogier in the books.

Ishamael's small monologue to Mat is also exactly in keeping with his character. He wants to break the wheel and end the world so he can have his only remaining wish - death beyond resurrection.

We have also resolved or begun to resolve some garbage from season 1 such as Moiraine's 'stilling' and Lan basically never mentoring Rand. We also have much better darkfriend scheming than we ever did in Season 1 with Barthanes and Liandrin.

What I did not like was Lanfear just walking through the waygate with Rand Moiraine and Lan. I guess you could consider them her hostages since she's vastly stronger but the whole thing seems like a much worse way to go about getting Rand to falme to fulfill the prophecy than Moiraine Lan and Rand going to the Ways and escaping from Lanfear and the White Tower.

Maybe the finale will sell me on that one, I don't know. I hope it does because that would put the finishing touches on a vastly improved season.

I also can't wait to stop seeing Maksim on my screen, the whole thing just screams nepotism.

The Wheel of Time: Daughter of the Night (2023)
Season 2, Episode 4
6/10
Poor plotlines hurt the story
10 September 2023
I like how they are expanding on the character's stories and unique traits in this season since that seemed pretty underdeveloped in season 1. I also like how some aspects of the story are beginning to be tied together and the cinematics and world look largely as they should as well.

What I do not like is the entire Lan arc where very little actually happens and is a distraction from the main story. The motivation for it also makes no sense and lowers the quality of this episode.

There is also some poor acting by Rand's actor at the end of the episode and that portion is rushed in general. I think if more time had been devoted to that scene and if it had been reshot a few times it would have been a lot better.

The Wheel of Time: What Might Be (2023)
Season 2, Episode 3
8/10
Solid television with some flaws
5 September 2023
I thought Nynaeve's test was generally well handled in that it was drawn out, stressful, and intense which is what it should be otherwise it's all talk and no show. I did not like that this involved a fake death which we have had so many of that it has cheapened the show, making us worry less about our main characters since they always come back to life.

Elayne's actress is excellently cast she does very well in the role and I like a lot of her lines and interactions with Egwene, very enjoyable to watch. Mat's actor seems to be an improvement on Barney Harris which is also a welcome surprise and even though Mat is moody early in the series he has some fun lines as well.

The world feels increasingly fleshed out and the sets, dialogue, and general appearance of the show are a big step up from Season 1. I hope this continues in future episodes. I am uncertain about where the story is headed but it seems to, very generally, follow the trajectory of the Great Hunt. Let's hope it continues on that path without too many turns for the worse.

The Wheel of Time: A Taste of Solitude (2023)
Season 2, Episode 1
7/10
Significantly Better than Season 1
2 September 2023
I did not like Season 1 it was a massive hot mess especially towards the end where story fell apart entirely with an very, very bad ending episode. This episode is getting unfair hate as if it is bad when it tries to do its best with the disastrous ending of season 1 and considering how bad that was, what do you expect? In my view this is watchable, not brilliant but not bad enough that I cringed watching it. People who said it got worse are overreacting.

It should be obvious to everyone with eyes that the acting, the sets, the attention to detail, and the script all got leveled up from season 1. I do not think it is 'there' yet but any improvement over the obvious CGI, low budget costumes, and.wookie suit trollocs is very welcome.

Season 1's problem was not that it deviated from the books, it's that it deviated in all the worst ways, especially at the end. The LoTR movies, famously some of the best in fantasy, heavily deviated from the source material but did so in a way that frankly improved the story (and hit all the major plot points) not the other way around. It is possible that Season 2 of this show may go down that path and that would be a very welcome change.

The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
Season 1, Episode 3
7/10
Emotional episode that is disconnected from the main story
1 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a bisexual man. I had this opinion downvoted on the reddit when I posted it there and I expect I'll have it downvoted here too.

This episode just wasn't as good as the first two. It just wasn't.

I'll start with the things I liked about this episode:

  • The acting is great. The two guys playing the gay couple (Bill and rank) are very compelling and portray their characters nicely. Joel and Ellie are good as they were in episode 1 and 2 as well.

  • The emotional impact of Bill and Frank's death is pretty strong, I had a hard time avoiding tears watching it because it is pretty sad. That's a good job by the writers in conveying emotion to the audience so well done there.

  • It's always cool to get flashbacks to Outbreak Day and I liked the montage where Bill is fortifying the property and gathering supplies.

  • A very humanizing approach to gay relationships in general. That was pretty wholesome.

The things I did not like about this episode:

  • While the script is great at conveying emotions it is not logically consistent. The entire setup to Bill and Frank's relationship makes no sense. We get the depiction that Bill is paranoid and a survivalist, so why is he just letting in some dude he knows nothing about, letting him do whatever in his house, and like 2 minutes later having sex with him? It's the apocalypse, you have no idea whether this guy has been bitten or otherwise diseased (yes he gives him a screening test but is that 100% accurate? Do you know?), you don't know whether he can be trusted assuming he's not infected, you have no knowledge about who he really is at all. How did they come to love each other anyway? That's never set up it just happens overnight

I did not think this was well set up and was entirely inconsistent with Bill's character.

  • Weak connection between the past and the present. It is very disjointed when we have two episodes that are fast paced, largely in the present, and even had a major character death but suddenly it's time to put the series to a screeching halt with Bill and Frank's extended backstory. I think this episode would've been much better with limited relationship backstory and much more focus on the present. You could have it go along the lines that Bill is honoring rank's memory by helping Joel and Ellie or whatever. But we killed him before that could happen so that sucks.

Also homophobic review bombing sucks and has happened to other shows with similar themes but that doesn't make these automatically awesome because the bigots hate it. Do better.

The story is starting to come together
29 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
While the Rings of Power is a very slow show, so slow you begin to grow gray hairs while watching it, it is finally beginning to come together. The southlander and numenor plotlines are converging, the harfoot story is (very painfully) moving along, and we are getting some nice character development of Durin (one of the most enjoyable characters thus far), Halbrand, some of the southlanders (their conflicting motivations), and Definitely-Not-Gandalf.

The show continues to be absolutely gorgeous with excellent costuming, amazing shots of basically everything, and a strong musical score complementing powerful visuals.

Downsides are Galadriel who continues to be an overly arrogant rage-bot, the painfully slow story, and a continual lack of motivation to care about what's going on. I personally do not mind the dialogue I think it's fine I just wish there was less 'talking' and more 'doing'.

An intriguing start
6 September 2022
I am basing this review off of two benchmarks, Amazon's other major fantasy series the Wheel of Time and Peter Jackson's LOTR movies.

First the visuals are genuinely outstanding. The costuming, sets, landscapes, skies, CGI, etc. All of it is borderline perfect. This is the level of quality one would expect from a massive budget show and it delivers. Well done.

The acting is serviceable but some of the actors deliver their lines in flat monotone which is not good. However I did not see anything that was outright bad and overall it is reasonable.

The script is okay, this is an introductory episode and so many things will remain unexplained. I greatly appreciated the general overview of Middle Earth, past and current conflicts, and introducing the scope of the world as we see in the first 15 minutes. I am not an LOTR nerd and have not read any of the books so I can't nitpick any inaccuracies here. This reminded me of the intro in the first LOTR movie as it serves the same purpose. The narration of it was strong though it went on for 5 minutes too long.

I think the script lacks some 'personality' to get me more invested in the characters and the world they live in. I found myself asking, at several points, 'why do I care?'. However, it is good enough to get me hooked, which any decent series should do, and I will be watching episode 2. I cannot comment on any supposed story inaccuracies because I'm still not quite sure what the story is - which will be a major failing if the script fails to deliver on this front - but I have a general idea.

Peter Jackson's LOTR had a substantially better script and more interesting characters but this is a TV series so I'm willing to give it time.

The musical score is great and feels very much like LOTR.

Overall 7/10. I think the haters are nitpicking and exaggerating the faults of this show thus far and those rating it a 10 are not thinking critically. This very much feels like a serious effort to make an LOTR series and commands a sense of grandeur that the Wheel of Time didn't even try to match. Indeed, Wheel of Time feels like child's play compared to the sense of awe I had from the visuals alone.

Well done.

For All Mankind: The Sands of Ares (2022)
Season 3, Episode 8

Significantly better
31 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A blissful lack of boring drama makes this episode significantly more watchable than the last two. It took two episodes but we're actually doing things on Mars and it's about as cool as you'd expect. Can we have more of this it's kind of why I watch the show. Downsides of this episode: Danny and his permanently PO'd brother are a real drag on the show and Kelly being pregnant is a very avoidable level of cringe that we're going to be dealing with. Oh well. I hope it'll at least happen in Mars because I can't take another 5 minutes of Danny's brother having permanent mope face or whatever's going on with the gay president.

45 minutes of filler 5 minutes of space
25 July 2022
I waited 6 episodes into this season for the characters to get to Mars. Now that they are on Mars all we are focusing on is the President's gay husband, Danny's brother, Danny, Margo and the Russians etc. My mistake, I had thought once man had reached Mars for the first time ever we might actually do things on Mars and see things on Mars and have action on Mars. This is lousy, boring, third rate filler and a waste of everyone's time.

Do better.

Sex in space
17 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The screenwriters seem to have gotten lost in space because now that the astronauts are on Mars they seem to have no idea what to do with them. Instead we are treated to a number of truly unbelievable moments such as two astronauts having sex on Mars, random bickering and infighting among the astronauts, a fistfight, 40 minutes of drama over a gay character, binge drinking, and so on. Anyone who knows anything about protocols in space knows that all of this behavior would be strictly prohibited since it endangers every aspect of the mission. The space sex is especially irresponsible since it creates an added pregnancy risk - lets hope we aren't treated to that later. Mars, the Porn Planet.

I'm all for inclusivity and the astronaut coming out as gay, ok fine cool. This is the 90s so some people won't like it. Commander Poole, being a professional should tell them to shut up and get over it. Bam, storyline done and we're back to Mars. You could even turn that into a whole 'Mars is a fresh start' thing without endless melodrama, with having a single character act like an adult and not a butthurt 14 year old.

We spend more time in habs, airlocks, and on Earth than we do on Mars - and we're on the planet! We waited a week for this? What a letdown.

"He slid into my DMs"
21 June 2022
This movie was so bad me and my partner could not finish it. This movie is overloaded with filler and has a bottomless pit of screenwriting blunders that truly make me wonder if any proofreading occurred during the making of this movie. There are multiple moments where it sounds like real conversations about the movie accidentally made it into the script.

"Why did we make this movie?" "For the money Alan..."

The film has no sense of tone, pacing, plot, or character development of any kind. And we are treated to yet more entirely unbelievable scenes of Chris Pratt taming 6 foot tall velociraptors with The Force. It is a disaster of Jurassic proportions.

Dune (2021)
8/10
A good beginning to something great
28 May 2022
In many ways, Dune reminds me of a darker, more serious version of Star Wars. It combines many of the best elements of science fiction and futurism with interstellar political intrigue and conflict. The characters are interesting , served with good dialogue and worldbuilding, and have clear, well established motivations for what they do in the movie. Arrakis is a highly interesting setting as well, both due to its inhabitants and its striking similarities to real places in our solar system (Mars). The movie loses 2 stars simply because it is a beginning and beginnings cannot deliver everything an audience may want, because that isn't their purpose. Their purpose is to hook the audience into a much greater story, and Dune serves that purpose well.

Like many others, I'm looking forward to part two.

Arcane (2021– )
9/10
Outstanding
23 May 2022
I'd heard a lot about Arcane for months until I decided to finally sit down and watch it with my partner a few days ago. It is a brilliant, well done show with strong animation, musical score, an intro so good it will give you chills, as well as boasting good dialogue, character development, and an intriguing plot. There are tons of likable characters in Arcane and even the villains are hardly cookie cutter with characters such as Silco and Jinx having sympathetic aspects to their nature. There is very much a political subtext surrounding Arcane, a struggle between the 'haves' of Piltover and the 'have nots' of Zaun, which makes what's unfolding on the screen transcend fantasy and become a commentary about reality.

Arcane is not perfect and does have some flaws, such as a relatively slow start, some fight sequences that, while epic, go on for a little too long, and a lack of time. I left wanting more. Only 40 minutes per episode? Give us one hour episodes Riot!

While a first in many respects what Arcane does best is finally proving that media based on a video game does not have to suck and it can be just as awesome and interesting and cool as more traditional media. Well done, 9/10.

Deserves better reviews
29 March 2022
I personally thought this show was very tense and scary almost all the way through. Both Season 1 and 2 are good though there are some moments that do not make sense, some character traits or decisions that are not explained, the death of a character I really liked (Season 2), and some interesting plotlines that are not expanded on. The seres loses 2 stars for that reason. It earns 8 for being a reasonably accurate and gripping portrayal of just how dangerous and scary a zombie armageddon would really be. I don't understand the haters.

Uncharted (2022)

Corny but fun
7 March 2022
First lets get the bad out of the way and get to the good. Mark Whalberg and Tom Hardy have a lot of star power but both were woefully miscast in Uncharted. They're both too young for their parts and Tom Hardy is not only too thin but almost nothing about him reminds you of Nathan Drake if you played or watched the games. The good news is the script carries a lot of personality with plenty of jokes and neat though sometimes predictable logical and plot twists. At its heart it's a story about thieves, treasure, and scrappy fights with mercenaries, and that's what Uncharted is all about. Turn off your brain for the physics proof fights and you're in for a good time. 7/10.

Europa Report (2013)
6/10
A mildly scary film which should have been terrifying
14 February 2022
Here is some context about Europa for you: it is a tiny, as in tiny, ice ball located 390 million miles away from Earth. It has essentially no atmosphere and a temperature of -260 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees colder than Mars gets at night). It is one of the most dangerous places in space with a radiation level 1,800 times that of earth on its surface. As has been pointed out before, sending humans to this moon without extreme protection is suicide.

I think this film could have captured the sheer terror of deep space, the deadly environment of Europa, and the possible deadliness of whatever creatures it may, or may not, contain if it ditched the found footage motif entirely. I never liked the found footage format it just never seemed as frightening and in your face scary as experiencing it "live". It's like watching a youtube video of the scary thing instead of being in the scary thing.

Another drawback of the found footage is we lose a wider view of the environment, a big problem here because you want the audience to see Europa and the massive nearby Jupiter. I think I saw more of both in the movie's poster than I did in the actual film. The film loses a few stars for these reasons.

On the other hand, the movie earns some kudos for fairly good acting, reasonably realistic portrayal of astronauts, some stressful and frightening moments, and a generally intriguing look at what could be lurking out there in space. If only it wasn't found footage.

Outlast: Whistleblower (2014 Video Game)
9/10
Unbelievably scary
11 February 2022
Outlast Whistleblower had so many interesting moments and characters it really should have been its own full length game. Outlast was already disturbing but Whistleblower ups the ante with terrifying scenes across the board. Eddie Gluskin, a former serial killer turned reality-detached mass murderer, is fitting as the game's 'final boss' and his dialogue with Waylon is disturbing. Whistleblower also introduces some fun lore which perfectly complements the original story.

Excellent game. Highly recommend playing or watching the playthroughs on youtube.

Ozark (2017–2022)
8/10
A worthy successor to Breaking Bad
24 January 2022
Ozark has a very intense, interesting story. I could tell that much because I had to skip a few scenes just due to how uncomfortable the stuff on screen made me feel. With a show like Ozark, that's a good thing. The designated 'bad guys' are mostly terrifying, as they should be. This is especially true for Del who, although he does not make it far into the show, is one of the most intimidating characters Ozark has to offer. The general depravity of the world is brought out quite well with people having lunch with each other one day and being tortured by those same people the next. Disturbing stuff.

The characters are generally interesting and even fun particularly Buddy, Marty, and Ruth, the latter of whom is my favorite. Very good acting all around with the right emotions conveyed at the right times. There are some plot points that are a bit difficult to believe (mainly in Season 4 but perhaps they will be ironed out in the final episodes) andthe show does drag at times. Then again, it is difficult to write TV that always keeps up the pace and Ozark ratchets up the tension often enough, in believable ways, to keep me interested. Give it a shot, you'll be hooked too.

Squid Game (2021– )
9/10
Utterly brutal
24 January 2022
Squid Game is a barbaric, dramatic, and intense indictment of modern capitalism with very in-your-face demonstrations of poverty, power, and ruthless murder. The acting and the script makes the whole thing come alive and certain episodes, particularly episode 6 and 8, had me on the verge of tears. If you watch them you will understand why. The show has some flaws, mainly some unneeded sex scenes and some questionable plot points. However it hits all the right beats and became the mass hit that it has by demonstrating the ruthless sociopathy of capitalism. This is summed up best at the end with the justification for Squid Game: it was fun.

Very underdeveloped
16 January 2022
It's like most of the core cast of characters who created the Matrix got back together to make a new movie but by copy pasting scenes from the previous movies. There are over a dozen instances of scenes either literally cut and pasted from prior films into this one or scenes completely ripped off from say, the first movie and redone in a less interesting fashion in this one. In fact, the entire movie feels that way, a less interesting, less epic version of the first one. Even the outfits look less cool.

There was a strong and noticeable lack of new ideas in this film and it does not help that there is no Hugo Weaving or Lawrence Fishburne and frankly I do not think the film should have been made without them. Especially if you are going to keep the characters of Morpheus and Agent Smith, two of the more enjoyable personalities from the original three films. I'm sure their replacements are capable actors but they just do not feel the same as the originals. It's the same feeling I had when they replaced the oracle's actress in the third movie. It just doesn't cut it.

Some dialogue is also cringeworthy such as random f-bombs where they are not warranted, almost everything Niobe says, and whatever the now weird looking Merovingian is saying about Mark Zuckerberg and Wikipedia.

It's all very disappointing because, while forced, the Matrix Resurrections could have been a decent standalone movie. The problem is that it badly lacks a plot and due to that, it feels like 2 and a half hours of filler riffing off the previous 3 films for the content it wasn't able to provide.

The Wheel of Time (2021– )
6/10
Terrible Season 1 with a substantially better Season 2
10 January 2022
Season 1 made me lose hope in this show. Season 2 is on the path to restoring it.

Very little was good about season 1 of the wheel of time. It had poor costuming, bad sets, poor CGI, mediocre dialogue, and truly terrible storytelling especially towards the end. Much of the hate this show receives is entirely due to season 1 and its utterly disastrous ending.

Season 2 either ignores or resolves a lot of the nonsense in season 1, which is very welcome. It also finally gives Rand, Mat, and Perrin something to do though it takes some time before it does. The dialogue, effects/CGI, and sets are all greatly improved as well and this is immediately noticeable especially in the later episodes. It is still very imperfect, has some bad plotlines, and some moments that truly make no sense but it is a substantial improvement on what we had. And unlike season 1 it actually ends the series where we were supposed to end and introduces a new character who could not be more spot on in their casting.

This show is beginning to resemble the real wheel of time but it'll need a lot more weaving, especially in the story, before what it truly becomes the world Robert Jordan made.

The Walking Dead (2010–2022)
8/10
Flawed but good show
10 January 2022
Seasons 1-6 earn a 9-10/10 each they are all quite well done with interesting characters, good fight scenes, and reasonably scary zombies. Seasons 7-11 are comparatively uneven with some very poor script choices, some uninteresting characters, and utterly boring episodes. However, despite its decline in popularity the Walking Dead remains a good show with generally quality acting, good screenwriting, and reasonably good pacing. It's the zombie show of the decade and like many long TV shows has its share of problems. Perhaps the biggest thing that has made the Walking Dead less interesting the longer it goes on is the increasingly low threat the Walkers pose. That's less of an issue with the showrunners and is mainly a problem with the duration of the show.

I also want to add that even though Season 7 and 8 are notoriously mediocre they introduce one of the greatest actors the show has had period - Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Just like how Andrew Lincoln was born to play Rick Grimes, Jeffrey Dean Morgan was born to play Negan. They both get their characters to the T and are highly enjoyable to watch, especially Morgan's Negan. I also think the series is coming to a good conclusion under Angela Kang's leadership with solid, though imperfect, show entries in Seasons 9, 10, and 11.

Give it a shot. It's worth your while.

Alex Rider (2020–2024)
8/10
Solid adaptation of the books
6 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The Alex Rider TV show is a great example of how to do a good adaptation of the source material even while taking liberties with it. This is mainly because the liberties still add up to create a cohesive and interesting plot, unlike in other shows where such liberties can destroy it. It's also just a very fun show with enjoyable dialogue, sometimes funny character interactions, and a highly likeable lead in Otto Farrant. He was a good choice for Alex Rider and clearly gets his character. It also greatly helps that he has chemistry with Tom, which accurately replicates their friendship in the books.

The series isn't perfect and some minor gripes include a few changes from the books that I haven't liked such as Julius Grief apparently dying rather early on and the casting of Smithers which may have been done so he didn't seem like a walking stereotype (jolly fat guy) but I was disappointed anyway. Still, it's very good overall and takes its material seriously enough to make it fun but not comical. Well done.

Awesome movie
4 January 2022
This film has what too many films lack: a soul

While the Intouchables is chock full of jokes it is not a comedy. The humor does not cheapen the film but strengthens it because it reminds you of the humanity of every character in the film. It shows people as they are, often complicated and contradictory creatures who feel most alive when they are either with or doing things they love. It is a tale of friendship, love, and care that is too often lacking in an industry increasingly obsessed with grimdark lifeless cinema. My partner is disabled and this film has helped me see that nobody should be treated like an invalid but as the whole person they are.

It is not perfect, but it is very good and continues to be good every time you watch it. This film deserves the love it has received for being a light in the darkness.
