Watch the Bands!!!
14 December 2002
It's about time someone focused on the Southern Classic Bands (half time). Millions of people faithfully support these bands because of their exceptional, explosive performances. I think the movie does a brilliant job of capturing all the power, excitement and zeal of the marching bands. If you have attended the classics, you will appreciate this movie. If you have never attended a classic, this movie can be a great introduction. The movie does an excellent job of capturing the level of competition and the desire to win. The drum line performance in this movie is awesome.

Poor Script
25 November 2002
I am a big fan of Anthony Hopkins and I like Chris Rock, although I don't think of him an actor. Still, something about this movie just didn't gel and I really think it was the script. Every once in a while a movie will come out that by all appearances should be a success. Here you have Anthony Hopkins and Chris Rock, true an unlikely duo. Nevertheless, they are two people who I was excited to see together in a movie, but unfortunately, they had a disappointing script. I'm not sure if it was suppose to be comedy or an action movie, perhaps both. However, it didn't come across on either genre for me. The plot was weak, the story line lacked integrity, and it was hard for me to follow. Those things spoiled the movie for me. I was expecting something very different. Despite all of this, there was a lot of action and if you're an action movie fan, and like Chris Rocks' humor, you probably will enjoy this movie.

This Movie is Worth Watching
23 October 2002
I listened to the critics about this movie and passed it by a number of times. I finally watched it on HBO and was very surprised. I THOUGHT THE MOVIE WAS VERY GOOD. The story is about a girl who separates from her mother at a young age and struggles to hang on to her self-esteem and dreams of redeveloping the relationship she lost with her mother. In the process of surviving, she finds stardom. This movie is not based on a dream of stardom but a dream of finding love and maintaining relationships. I felt Mariah Carey did a great job for a novice actor. I think the critics were caught up in her real life problems (which is sad for them) and trashed the movie on those bases. There is some superb acting by Terrence Howard, Da Brat, and Tia Texada. The musical score is excellent and Mariah's voice is superb. This was a movie about young people, their hopes, dreams and their never ending search to find themselves and where they fit into society. Stop looking at this movie as a dramatic episode. That is not what it is. I found it entertaining and realistic for it's intended purpose. I plan to add this movie to my collection. I have already brought the musical score. If you like movies such as: Sparkle, The Body Guard, The Temptations, and the Five Heartbeats you will enjoy this movie. It's worth seeing.

Tortilla Soup (2001)

Not only is delectable food savoring in the backdrop of this comedy, so are wanted desires.
31 January 2002
A widowed man successfully raises three daughters while owning and being master chef at an elegant Mexican restaurant. After the death of his wife (over a decade ago) he not only lost his zest for life but his sense of taste and smell. Despite this he still manages to maintain control of his restaurant, prepare mouth-watering gourmet meals for his daughters and skillfully control his household.

While their lives appear to be running smoothly things begin to unravel. The daughters who were once so willing and permissible to dad's control are developing the need for independence and the urge to experience life. All of them struggle with cultural customs that discourage independence and self-fulfillment. So not only is delectable food savoring in the backdrop of this comedy, so are wanted desires.

While the youngest daughter is trying to insert her independence; the oldest is on a crusade for sainthood (her way of deterring love), and the middle one is oozing with intelligence and is being forced into a life she doesn't want. The daughters are forced to take charge of their lives when fate takes over. This leaves the father having to make a decision about his own needs. He can remain in the house alone or begin a new life. It's not until he releases control of his Daughters lives that he is able to regain his own, finding love and his sense of taste and smell.) In the end they all learn a very valuable lesson, the importance of pursuing desires of the heart. This is truly an enjoyable and collectable movie.

Now here's a story children and adults can relate too. Monsters in the closet.
12 December 2001
While monsters in the closet may seem to be a scary reality for some children, `Monsters, Inc.' makes it light hearted by showing them it's all in a night's work. The characters are as charming as the cast that speaks for them.

It's a learning experience children get to see how an industry works. Monsters, Inc. is an in-genius corporation that has scientifically learned how to channel children's screams into energy that is used for electrical power. It has monster employees, an assembly line of doors (which give monsters access to children's bedrooms), a top-flight training program and some of the top Monsters in the scaring business.

There's a colorful Metropolis, filled with houses, buildings, businesses, cars and everything that makes a city run smoothly along with a population of colorful creatures. One of the colorful groups of creatures is the yellow swat team. Their job is to protect the Metropolis of Monsters, Inc. from human contamination.

But what happens when a human child mysteriously gets through the bedroom door and terrorizes the city with screams and boo's. It's wondrous and funny. In the mist of all this is industrial crime, brought on by greed. But, the story ends on a very happy note.

John Goodman is the voice of `Sulley' a colorful large blue-green ape like monster who's the star Monsters, Inc. employee. He's some type of monster, cut, cuddly, and he has a conscience that leads him to feelings of regret about scarring children. He becomes attached to Boo (voice of Mary Gibbs) a cute, little big-eyed girl who is mysteriously brought to Monsters, Inc. and in his quest to return her home becomes very attached to her.

Sulley's best friend is Mike (voice of Billy Crystal) who's a funny looking green ball with stick legs and one huge eye. His comedy is seen through out the movie. Mike is Sulley's driving force, acting as his agent. Mike's job is to make sure Sulley remains the top Monsters, Inc. employee. But when it comes to laughter Mike proves he's on top.

Mike's girl friend Celia (voice of Jennifer Tilley) is the stylish employee who has Mike's best interest at heart. Her job is to keep him out of trouble.

I give Monsters, Inc. a ten. It is an animated movie that can be enjoyed by the whole family. It makes for great family fun.

Duets (2000)
9/10
What happens when an overworked, unappreciated, businessman out for a joy ride meets up with a self defeated convict; a hustler and dead beat dad meets up with his daughter; and an uninhibited young women me
27 November 2001
"Duets" is a drama with hints of comedy that takes a realistic look at six individuals lives and the relationships that develop. All of the individuals meet by chance and end up in the same place, a Karaoke Night Club in Omaha, hoping to grab the big jackpot. Each individual is fascinating within himself. But it is the couples `duets' that take the movie to interesting heights. Ricky (Huey Lewis) meets his daughter for the first time at her mother's funeral. While his daughter Liz (Gwyneth Paltrow) is determined to develop a father daughter relationship, dad is content on remaining a lone traveler with no attachments. His only contentment in life is to hustle at karaoke bars and feel contrived stardom. Then, there is the overzealous, uninhibited, Suzi (Maria Bello) who uses sex to shape her world. She lacks self-confidence and self-esteem, which is what she needs to pull off the biggest night of her life. She meets up with Billy (Scott Speedman) an underachieving taxi driver who forces her to take a look at her self worth.

The movie is stolen by the `duet' Todd (Paul Giamatti) and Reggie (Andre Braugher). Todd is a burned out salesmen who begins to reassess his life and work when he finds he's totally ignored and unappreciated by his family. He goes out for a pack of cigarettes, which leads to an extended joy ride meeting up with Reggie a convict. Todd gets his first taste of real freedom and adds comedy to the story by stepping beyond his normal limits, leaving Reggie to redeem himself by taking responsibility for the results of Todd's mayhem. The two together while likable characters really end up on a crime spree. Reggie who tends to lack emotional feelings attaches himself to Todd, who gives him his life long dream, the opportunity to sing.

The highlight of this movie is really the first time singing performance of the stars (excluding Huey Lewis.) Huey and Gwyneth Paltrow do a nice soft version of Smoky Robinson's `Cruising Together.' Gwyneth also does a nice sexy rendition of `Betty Davis Eyes.' But the hats-off performance goes to Paul Giamatti and Andre Braugher for their rendition of Otis Redding's `Try a Little Tenderness.' This performance makes this movie well worth seeing and buying.

All in all I think this movie does a lot with human character. It looks at ordinary people, their wants and desires and brings them to a decision point no matter how traumatic. In today's world is this really so unbelievable.
