Dogs of Berlin (2018)
Well written and, thank the Lord, a different kind of murder mystery
My wife and I watch a lot of murder mysteries and this one's up there because it is different. It's not reality, at least I hope not, but it is engaging, there are some scenes that are at the top of our list, it's intriguing and worth the time to watch. I will never understand, however, why almost all European murder mysteries we've seen have terrible English lyric songs for theme songs, with notable exceptions like Das Broen.
19-2 (2014)
One of the BEST police shows & I'm from a police family
I LOVE 19-2 and I'm bummed that the fourth season is the final season. I wish it would go on forever. There is a special quality to this show that is rarer than rare, as if all concerned are concerned with just doing their jobs and keeping it real, because real is the operative element here. I am going to watch this series again, it's that good! The only series I've watched twice are The Sopranos, when I got a big screen TV, and Prime Suspect, which is amazing. Come to think of it, it may be time to re-watch a few more of Lynda LaPlante's series. Acorn TV has them, as they have 19-2. TV is ten times better than movies now. We're all very lucky.
La migliore offerta (2013)
Worth a five but no more. Proves that writing and story are most important.
Beautifully shot, great music, fine acting, and the writing and story held such promise but, and this is a big but, the payoff of the setup is way too predictable for anyone who has watched a lot of mysteries in their time and of that I am guilty as charged. Maybe it is because I'm too experienced but I have been amazed recently by the way current writers, often on foreign TV shows, have been able to create unique, constantly surprising takes, playing with preconceived notions, not confirming them, as this film does. I gave it a five because I felt so betrayed but I can see why the less experienced or those better at forgetting what they've seen previously might enjoy it much more. It did garner lots of award nominations, I think mostly for the music and cinematography, but there were best picture and acting awards, too, so maybe it's just me or there weren't any better pictures made that year or the producers were skilled at working the festivals (StonyBrook, Long Island? I would hope they would have made the Hamptons Film Festival, which has broken big movies like King's Speech and Black Swan.
P'tit Quinquin (2014)
A Cinematic Acheivemtnt for the director and glorious cast but...
Rating this movie is almost impossible for me. As a cinematic achievement it deserves an 11 but, maybe I have watched too many detective pieces and I have watched A LOT of them, the ending was quite unsatisfactory in my opinion. The director is a certified award winning "autuer" and so the elites who review can't love his "quirkiness" and "darkness" enough. I am a regular person and I was amazed at how he got the regular people who are his actors to give these amazing performances, that's the cinematic achievement, as is the glorious countryside. I watched it on HULU and it's in HD cinematic format no commercials and it was so beautiful that my wife and I, who love where we live and hate to travel, both said we could live there and maybe should check it out! It was that gorgeous. I wish I could give this a 10 but the ending was not worthy of the rest of the film nor was it worthy of the director.
Hidalgo (2004)
One of my favorite movies, period. Watch it, you won't be disappointed.
I don't want to spoil anything for you so I'll just say that I've seen this movie at least four times since it came out and I love it more each time. I highly recommend it because it is one of my favorite movies of all times. I've also seen Silence of the Lambs about the same amount of times, to give you a counterpoint. I also enjoyed Spartacus the TV show, that has one of Hidalgo's actors in it. I also enjoy Ripper Street, Peaky Blinders, Orphan Black, just to name a bunch of shows that I like so you don't think I only enjoy Disney (Touchstone) movies like Hidalgo. I don't really understand why I have to have ten lines of text to post a review, that seems very arbitrary and unnecessary. OK, I think this will post now. Enjoy!
Lambert & Stamp (2014)
A great documentary about two unlikely friends & even more unlikely band managers
I found this documentary fascinating and on many levels. Chris Stamp seems like an amazing man, his energy leaps off the screen, and the editing is such that you really feel in the time of the discovery and launching of The Who with all of the craziness. The film is fun to watch and there is a tidbit in there about the early days of a band we all know that is, by itself, worth watching the whole movie. I'm going to see it again because the editing is the visual representation of what is being said by the interviewees and there's so much worth a second look that goes by quickly. My wife loved it, too. It's not often you get to see a documentary that is as real and relaxed and worth watching as "Lambert Stamp."
