Warum läuft Herr R. Amok (1970)
Beautiful, perceptive film
They don't make great low-budget films like this anymore. Fantastic performance by Kurt Raab, very moving, delicate, intense. You can feel the chill run down your spine when you watch him slowly degenerating. Fassbinder at his early best.
Domestic Disturbance (2001)
Disturbance to the viewer
I saw this film opening week in NY, and was engrossed in it, but rather disappointed by the cliche ending. Travolta actually gives a decent performance for a change, kind of likeable, but in general the film doesn't measure up. Vince Vaugh was convincing as well, but the script didn't give him too much room to wiggle in. I left the theater thinking that another hollywood film which managed to get some suspense going, was sacrificed to a cheap, unbelievable ending.
Kill by Inches (1999)
spine-tingling inches
I caught this film in New York and it left me creeped out. It may not be for everyone, but if you like cinematic films with a Hitchcockian flavor, old Polanski thrillers, Greenaway, or Lynch type of stuff, you'll probably appreciate it. It's not a gore or exploitation film, but takes its time and sucks you in, little by little, into the world of the deranged young tailor. It's more about psychological deterioration, like the feeling you get when you haven't slept for many days and you start seeing things, imagining horrors, or getting paranoid. The final ballroom scene fascinated me with the outrageous dancers and leering old tailors. I would recommend it to anyone interested in bizarre or different films.
