Bridesmaids (2011)
This May Be The Worst Film I've Ever Seen
Sadly, this was Jill Clayburgh's final film – I hope no one remembers her in this stinker. I have two English degrees and I'm working on a third; yet, I can't find the words to express how bad this movie is. Had I seen it in a theater, I would have demanded my money back. I found it to be worse than Howard The Duck and almost as mind numbing as Heaven's Gate. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes - better than this. Killer Tomatoes Eat France - better than this turd. Even Xanadu and Can't Stop the Music were better than this film. I was expecting a raucous girls' night out complete with behavior no woman will admit to, but this was not as it appeared in the TV commercials. The trivia section says that this was the highest grossing R-rated female comedy in history, out earning Sex in the City. I never liked the TV version of Sex in the City, but it looks like King Lear compared to this dreck. The only funny part of the film involved raccoons eating a discarded cake. P.T. Barnum said there is a sucker born every minute; this morass managed to find millions of them. Stay away.
The Guru (2002)
Fun Cultural Mix
I wasn't expecting much from this movie, but I was surprised. It is light entertainment, and it has something for everyone. For those thinking this is simply an attempt at "Bollywood" trying to go mainstream, it's more than that. It's a comedy, love stories, satire, and self-help all rolled into one. The entire cast does a great job turning a trite farce into something more.
One expects a little extra from the likes of Marisa Tomei, Heather Graham, and Christine Baranski, and this film delivers. Baranski does a great job with what otherwise might be a forgettable role; Tomei adds an intelligence to her character that might have been missed by other actors. Graham and Jimi Mistry are wonderful as the leads, who both respectively lead double lives.

Much Better than I Expected!
I only watched this movie because I was bored one afternoon, and it had a relatively high rating. I was expecting something along the lines of a very slow moving Merchant-Ivory period drama. The storyline was much more compelling than that. Through much of the film, I was thinking that I've seen similar stories on soap operas, and I knew how this was going to end. However, midway through the film, the story line ended up taking very interesting twists and turns. By the end of the film, I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen. The film was lushly photographed, well paced, and suspenseful. It made me want to read the original source material.
