Something the Lord Made (2004)
Sometimes it just feels good to be part of the world...
I admit it - I was angry that HBO gave 'The Sopranos' a week off in order to air this movie... So much so that I didn't even watch the premiere. But moping around after the Piston's blew a huge lead against the Laker's in game 2 of the NBA finals, I was flipping through and saw that it was on again. I thought to myself, 'Why not? there must be some reason they replaced 'The Sopranos' that week'. Indeed... This is a heartfelt, emotional, and inspiring film filled with performances of the like. Granted, it has its fair share of "cheesy" devices and predictability, but then again, so does "King Lear." I knew I recognized the main actor, but couldn't quite put my finger on it... Was I surprised (as well as ashamed) to learn here that it was Mos Def. I had always dismissed him as a 'hip-hop/rapper-actor' wannabe. He made me eat those words though, by delivering a simply OUTSTANDING performance... and while he and Rickman really carry the film, the supporting cast does a nice job as well.
10/10 (which I don't take lightly).
Thunderbirds Are GO (1966)
Utterly Wonderful...
Simply hilarious. I was flipping through channels the other day when I caught an episode on 'Tech Tv.' Funniest thing I think I have ever seen. They also gave little bits of information (kind of like VH1 Pop Up Videos) about all kinds of crazy spunk - and most of these were funny as well. Or at least they were to me. Of course, I've been told I have a very strange sense of humour... Its worth checking out though. Things like this make it worthwhile to live... amazing.
The Master of Disguise (2002)
Simply Horrible....
As bad as bad can be. Simply amazing how terrible this movie was... I am even ashamed to say that I saw it for free. True, I expected it to be "bad," but it surpasses this characterization beyond any movie I think that I have ever seen. The purest of pure dungus... Baffling.... Utter spunk.
American Psycho (2000)
Brilliant...
This is what satire should be - Swift would be proud. The only thing that is better than the amazing cinematography is the dialogue. Though the subject is dark and disturbing, it comes across as one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. The scenes where he describes his taste in music are hysterical! And poor Christie... "She's my... Cousin. She's comes from... France." Simply brilliant. But it also offers some severe social criticism - i.e. materialism/the external and its impact on individual identity. You should watch it a couple of times - it will get funnier (as well as make you think a lot) as you do... particularly the ending.
Highball (1997)
Witty and Hilarious...
I originally rented this film because I am a big Anna Sciorra fan, and was extremely disappointed that she had such a small role. But believe it or not, this simple little film includes some of the wittiest and funniest scenes/dialogue I have ever seen. You need to watch it a couple of times to pick up on a lot of things, but it is well worth it. Felix's story about Phillip's child is as funny as it gets... And the one liners are amazing - seriously, check out this film, and let me know what you think. "Everybody Felix... It's Felix's Birthday!" It is spectacular!!!
