Naked (1993)
An embodiment of postmodernism
Hands down my favorite movie of all time. It has so many levels, that you can watch it 10 times and notice something new every time.
Johnny is the embodiment of postmodernism, criticising everyone who is trapped, trapped in space, trapped in time, trapped in relationships or trapped in a meaningless job. But simultaneously Johnny himself is trapped in his inability to commit to anything. (I've got an infinite places to go, the problem is where to stay). His now famous phrase against the urge for 'cheap thrills' to tackle the boredom of a society which has achieved so much, but can't seem to find any meaning in it, reflects also his own inability to find any joy in the knowledge that he has of the world and of the people around him. Only superficial and harmful sexual relationships and cynicism remain.
Simultaneously the film is about love, sex, meaning, and the feeling of loneliness in a city full of people. It is still as relevant as in the 90s.
Annihilation (2018)
An okay movie with a plot that will stick with you for years
I think it deserves a higher rating than it currently has. Two years after seeing this movie for the first time, I still sometimes think of it. That does make a great movie, or at least a great plot. Now I agree that there are made many mistakes, which is a shame, but in all honesty I've never seen a movie quite like it. If the writers took the time too deepen it and to fix the holes in it, it would have been one of the masterpieces of this decade. Too bad, because the concept itself deserves that. The acting is okay and the cinematography is very good. Overall the movie is enjoyable and entertaining.
Monsters Inside: The 24 Faces of Billy Milligan (2021)
Fell asleep
The first time I've watched it I fell asleep during the first episode.
The second time I've tried it I fell asleep during the first episode.
Now I've tried it a third time and I've made it to the 4th episode, during which I fell asleep.
The story is interesting. For people interested in psychology, and the relation between psychological developments and the judicial system. It raises important issues and problems which are still relevant. However besides that the documentary is terrible. Why was someone filmed inside a safe? Why the endless repetition of the same images, and simultaneously leave our so much detail. Who were the other 14 personalities? Why were they unwanted? This series seems to do everything it can to make it till the end of the fourth episode, which I could not. Instead of leaning on stretches, misleading storytelling and unusual editing, they should have filled it up with more relevant information.
Too bad, because the case itself is very interesting.
Cry Babies Magic Tears (2018)
Uninspiring
As the other reviews already stated, the show has little variance in characters, voices and episodes and had little to none pedagogical value. It has no story line, no creative writing, no tension arc and no feeling for timing. It is a constant flow of senseless and uninspiring babbling and seems to be made purely for advertising the toys. Personally, I don't like my daughter watching it. Time and attention are valuable and this show is simply not worth it. We also should not encourage the makers to continue making this. In my opinion, we also should avoid any show that is made for advertising. Media can be an art and can change your way of seeing the world around is, and should not be made purely for consumption goals.
