Tar (2020)
Mixed Bag
There was a lot to take from this and I don't know where to go first. I did enjoy the movie, it was a fun plot and when I found out it wasn't a horror film it made more sense. There were many jokes though that did not land and I always think indie directors need to pick or choose. Direct or act. Don't do both.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
I Wanted This to be Good
More or less this is a carbon copy of the original. The actor cast as Freddie was perfect but the makeup they had on him was so thick he could barely move. Rooney Mara looked bored the whole film. The best part was the visuals. I would give the cinematography a 9.
Asylum of Fear (2018)
Like A Late Night Ghost Hunting Special
This reminds me of those paranormal tv shows you see every night on travel channels. Once the film gets to the asylum it was a fun watch. Good paranormal scares and the ghost hunting crew were cast really well. This film is not perfect, it's a plot that has been done repeatedly and some of the supporting characters could have been replaced. I like ghost stories and those paranormal tv shows so this was a good one. If you enjoy those as well I would recommend this movie.
Halloween Kills (2021)
Slash Them Up
When it comes to slashers I am easily entertained. Scary villains and gory deaths. That is the meat of the genre and as long as those are hit it is a winner in my book. This hit both check boxes repeatedly.
Halloweed (2016)
Why?
I like to give indie films a lot of credit because its not easy to get a film completed. But wow. I have no idea what I watched. It took me multiple attempts to get through the whole thing. From a technical standpoint this was a big swing and a miss. The acting was so painful that not a single joke landed. This was a plot that could have been a big hit in the early 2000's with a much stronger script and a better team. I wish I wasn't sucked in by the title of the movie, it's the only element that works.
Malignant (2021)
Wow
Normally these kinds of horror movies are not my cup of tea. However this movie was a fantastic watch from start to finish. A throwback to old school slashers with a twist I never saw coming. Highly recommend to anyone looking for something different.
The Conjuring 2 (2016)
Too Hollywood
I loved the first conjuring film. Ghosts and paranormal movies are my favorite and the Conjuring was done right. Once this movie came out the entire conjuring world they started to build got way too Hollywood. Since these are based on true stories you can pin point from the get-go what could be a real aspect of the story and what Hollywood decided would be "scary." The end result was most of the film not being scary.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Basically the Hunger Games
But I loved every second of it! Must watch, and use the subtitles not the audio dubbing if you need English. You will forget you are reading subtitles after 5 minutes and get a more accurate translation.
