Reviews
The Kids Are All Right (2010)
A well-made film that combines moments of comedy along with themes involving family issues
After missing out on the opportunity to catch this in the cinemas, I finally sat down and gave this film a watch due to several positive reviews that it has been receiving, and it was most definitely worth the watch.
The Kids Are All Right (directed by Lisa Cholodenko) focuses on the story of an unhappy lesbian couple, Nic (played by Annette Benning) and Jules (played by Julianne Moore) who are in a long-term committed relationship and they live with their two children Joni (played by Mia Wasikowska from Alice in Wonderland) and Laser (played by Josh Hutcherson from Bridge to Terabithia) who were artificially inseminated. Shortly after Joni's 18th birthday and before she leaves for college, Laser is highly keen to find out who their biological father (played by Mark Ruffalo) is and asks Joni to do so. Together, they secretly meet him and they find out that his name is Paul and he is a co-op farmer and restaurateur, and they begin to develop a rapport. However, when Nic and Jules find out through Laser, Nic is less than unimpressed by Jules, like the children, develops a rapport with Paul and when he hires her to construct his garden, things later become heated within the family.
Overall, I was impressed by the film. The themes of betrayal, anger, love and pain are themes that could relate to any family and I felt that I could relate to the characters in this way and all of the actors produced strong performances to make this connection possible. Annette Bening and Mark Ruffalo both put in particularly striking performances and are highly deserving of their Oscar nominations, and the script is also very well written to go on top of it with some moments worthy for a few laughs.
By taking all of these qualities and compiling them all together, I found that this is a very well-made film and I am glad that I took the the time to finally sit down and watch it. 4/5
The King's Speech (2010)
Touching, moving and simply amazing. The King's Speech is a true masterpiece
I could go on for hours praising this film. I really could, everything about this film is simply flawless and it is no surprise to see it receive twelve Academy Award nominations.
Tom Hooper's The King's Speech is based on the true story of King George VI (portrayed by Colin Firth) and his story of overcoming his speech impediment, and as I repeated earlier, the film is flawless in every category. The way that the different emotions of emotional pain (watching him deliver a public message in the opening scene was particularly a joyless scene in terms of emotion) to eventual joy in a very heart-warming final scene combined with comedy despite struggling through the hardest of times is what makes this film so perfect.
On top of that, the acting is simply amazing. Colin Firth is simply brilliant at portraying King George VI and the hard times that he faced during his life. He is supported superbly by Helena Bonham Carter as Queen Elizabeth The Queen's Mother and his wife, who proves that she is currently one of the best actresses going around at the moment, as well as Geoffrey Rush who portrays his speech therapist Lionel Logue who also proves that he was one of the greatest Australian actors of all time. All of these cast members were acting as if they weren't acting at all. Their performances were so real and truthful.
All of the technical categories were superbly done as well. The 30's setting was captured perfectly, along with the amazing shots of Westminster Abby, the score is incredible and Hooper's direction is perfect. There was not a single flaw in any of the scenes.
In conclusion, if you are yet to see this film, do yourself a favour and do so, you will be in for an absolute treat, this is a truly brilliant film and it is likely to be one for the ages. This thoroughly deserves a 5/5.
Little Britain (2003)
Very funny British Comedy
Little Britain is a hilarious British Comedy that stars Matt Lucas and David Walliams that play several characters each. This has made me laugh in many ways such as Marjorie Dawes (Fat Fighters), Carol "Computer Says No" Beer, Judy and Maggie, Mr Mann, "Bubbles" De Vere etc.
Most of it gives me a laugh although it gets repetitive and predictable after a while and it's not so funny. Always watch a couple of episodes at once because of that reason Ignoring that it is a typical British comedy that will lighten you up when you are feeling down. Great show and very funny. 4.5/5
Death Proof (2007)
Typical Tarantino
Death Proof (directed by master Quentin Tarantino) is the second part of "Grindhouse" with the first being Planet Terror.
Death Proof follows the story of Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell), a former Hollywood stunt race car driver who targets and kills women with his "death-proof" stunt car.
Mike goes to Austin, Texas to target a group of women whom he knows; Jungle Julia an outgoing, dope-smoking, radio DJ/fashion model meeting her old school friends for a night on the town whom are sentimental model Arlene, and local bad-girl Shanna, as well as bar-nut hippie Pam who tries to make Mike notice her, unaware of his sociopath and misogynist tendencies.
He then goes to Tennessee where he targets another group of girls to stalk all of whom work in a motion picture.
In summary, this is a fun ride and is a typical Tarantino flick with bloody violence, references to his other movies etc. Although not his best work, it's definitely a misunderstood film and includes the best car chase I've ever seen in film. 4.5/5.
I Am Legend (2007)
If it wasn't for the CGI this would've been a great film
This was an enjoyable film. Robert Neville (Will Smith) is the only man left in the world (or so we think) in 2012 after a virus wipes out the rest of the human race which turns them into vicious hungry monsters. Robert wants to find a cure so in order to find it he seeks out the infected beings at night and either takes them out to survive or drags them to his underground lab for research.
I was sitting in my seat thinking that this was going to be a great thriller. Then came the horrible CGI. The monsters and the lions are terribly CGI'd. They looked like they were photo shopped directly from the internet. The daytime shots were done well but at night it turned into some lame cheesy action movie. It was a real shame because this had potential to be a great thriller.
Aside from that, the acting is done well and some scenes were tense with some jump scenes. 3/5.
Psycho (1960)
This has to be the best horror movie of all time
Let me just say that this is not only in my top 10, it is in my top 3. This is the perfect definition of a masterpiece. It was thrilling and suspenseful and everything is flawless. The shower scene has to be one of the scariest and best made scenes of all time. But the scariest scene of the movie is when Norman's mother's rotten corpse in the fruit cellar. The way the corpse is made just makes it so scary.
Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) steals $40,000 from her employer's client and on the run, she stops at a motel run by Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins.) Under Norman's mother's domination, he murders her.
Anthony Perkins's performance is brilliant as Norman Bates and just about every other actor was perfect in their role and the twist at the end is amazing. I can't see how anyone could possibly not like this movie because to me this is one of the best movies ever. I gave it a perfect 5/5. Alfred Hitchcock is truly a director of masterpieces.
Disturbia (2007)
Just a dumb, teen thriller
Disturbia is a good example of a modern day, dumb teen thriller. It pretty much rips off Rear Window.
The plot is very simple. A troubled teen called Kale Brecht (Shia LaBeuof)is living under house arrest and is convinced that his next door neighbor is a serial killer after spying on a girl that he likes. He becomes obsessed of unraveling the truth and in the end it becomes a matter of life and death.
Overall, this was an average film. It had cheesy moments and it was rather dumb. The acting was fairly decent though. It did have some tense moments but other than that it just didn't really work out for me.
I will be generous and give it a 2.5/5.
Garfield: The Movie (2004)
Ugh! Feral
This is a really lame film. I wasn't really looking forward to this but I rented it one night when I was bored. I was watching through it and it was pretty bad but there is worse.
Garfield is based off the famous comic books and I think they had a show as well. Of course, most T.V shows or comic book to movies are bad and this is no exception. This has awfully lame jokes and is not funny at all. I admit that the animals are cute but the movie in general is feral.
I give this a 1/5 and that's for (as I mentioned earlier) the animals being cute.
The Simpsons Movie (2007)
Best Animated Film since Finding Nemo
Yes, it is that funny. This is much more entertaining than overrated films like The Incredibles and Happy Feet. I will give you a detailed plot.
Lake Springfield is becoming very polluted and Lisa wants to help but has no success. With the help of an Irish boy, Colin, she is able to hold a press conference and the town agrees. Meanwhile, Homer adopts a pig from Krusty Burger and brings it home. Marge warns him that what Grandpa said links to the pig. Later, Homer is forced to dispose of the waste properly but when Lenny tells him that Lard Lad Donuts is giving out free donuts, he dumps the waste in the lake making it very polluted. The EPA traps Springfield in a dome possibly forever. Don't leave as soon as the credits roll because there is a special treat a couple of minutes in the credits.
Homer is his stupid self in this movie and some of the humour is Family Guy like humour. It feels like it's a movie length episode form season 4 and 5 because it's funny. There are a lot of funny jokes including the classic "Spider Pig." This is definitely a new animated classic, it's the funniest movie released this summer. Forget crap like Harry Potter, this is one of the movies of the year. Very funny and a must-see for everyone, even if you're not a fan of The Simpsons. 5/5!
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
R.I.P Harry Potter
When the first Harry Potter movie was released in 2001. It was a really good dark fantasy film. The second one was even better. But after that it went downhill and this one is one of the worst movies ever made. How much of the book did they miss? This is probably the most rushed book to movie film ever. This is even more rushed than The Goblet of Fire. and it didn't lead anywhere. The movie didn't explain much at all and I was just sitting there thinking "what the hell is going on?" The acting was also at a poor standard. After seeing this I don't think I will be seeing anymore Harry Potter films.
In conclusion if you want to see a good movie that's been released this summer, go see Knocked up or The Simpsons Movie. Don't bother with this unexplained, rushed piece of *beep*. 1.5/5. Just awful.
El laberinto del fauno (2006)
Beautiful, stunning and the best film of this decade
Let me just say, that this is the best film of this decade (easily.) I am not surprised it got a 22 minute applause at the Cannes Film Festival. It really was that good.
This is set in the Spanish Civil War in 1944 and a young girl called Ofelia is sent along with her pregnant mother to live with her cruel stepfather who is the captain of the Spanish army. During the night, she meets a fairy who takes her to an old faun in the center of the labyrinth. He tells her she's a princess, but must prove her royalty by surviving three gruesome tasks. If she fails, she will never prove herself to be the the true princess and will never see her real father, the king, again. This is truly one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen, it was robbed of the Oscar. The Academy that year, went way downhill.
Trust me, this is not a kids fantasy film. It is dark and some of the creatures will scare young children, especially the pale man who is easily the scariest fantasy creature ever made.
This movie is recommended to everyone but be prepared for a tragic ending. Everything about this film is perfect. The acting, the score, the directing etc. 5/5. See it now if you haven't.
The Departed (2006)
Brilliant!
The Departed is the first Martin Scorsese film I've seen and I have to say this was brilliant. This is a great adaption of the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs. This is well directed, well written and all of the actors were great in their roles. Leonardo DiCaprio as Billy Costigan (a rookie cop.) Matt Damon as Colin and Jack Nicholson as the evil mob boss Frank Costello. I also think it is really good how Scorsese included some clever humour. I'm not surprised that this won best picture, this is probably the best film of 2006.
This has a lot of language and violence in it, as do most of his movies.
I intend to watch more of Scorsese's films in the future. 5/5. A great return for him.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Inspiring and Amazing. This is my favourite film
The Shawshank Redemption has taken place as my number 1 favourite film. I was really looking forward to seeing this and when I did, I knew I was in for a treat. This is easily the best film ever made. It's very moving and inspiring. This movie has no action scenes, just men in a prison who chat but not for one second i was bored. Frank Darabont is a great director, as he also made The Green Mile. The fact that this didn't win the seven Oscars it was nominated for makes my blood boil. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman give very memorable performances in their roles. The narration, the direction, everything is flawless. The ending is very heart-warming and happy.
This is the best book-to-movie adaption I've ever seen. Infinity times better than The Cat in the Hat (as that is the worst film I've ever seen.) It doesn't surprise me that it is #2 on the IMDb top 250. i recommend this to everyone who hasn't seen it. As said in my summary and the start of the review, it's not only my favourite film of the 90's. It's my favourite film of all time. You know, I'm giving this 10/5. It's just that good.
Meet the Robinsons (2007)
A Fun movie that most people should enjoy
Before I saw this, I didn't know anything about it. But as I watched it I got the plot. This movie is about an 12-year old orphan called Lewis. He is a brilliant inventor, who meets a stranger called Wilbur Robinson. At the science fair, the bowler hat guy ruins his invention. So Wilbur takes him to the future and together they must find the Bowler Hat Guy.
Although, the trailer made it look like you see a lot of the family but you don't see them a lot. You mainly see Wilbur. You do get introduced to the family but it doesn't happen until about the 30-minute mark.
This movie has a good twist. Although it's a tad predictable, it still works out. Some of the humour was actually more for adults. As in when the Bowler Hat Guy wrote find the $#%*&#$ boy, which obviously means the f word. Then again, some jokes were for little kids as in the dinosaur saying that he has small arms and a big head. You probably saw that part in the trailer. The animation in this film was decent.
This is much better than most recent animated films released in the past year, except for cars (which was good.) This is one of those movies that's not great but you just sit back and enjoy the ride. It's good to see that Disney has taken a break from pixar. 3/5.
Epic Movie (2007)
An Epic is an epic
An epic is an epic. An awful movie is an awful movie. When I heard they were going to make an Epic Movie, I was like if it's called Epic Movie then it might be an epic. It's an epic horror but not an epic comedy. I timed it, it went for 60 minutes but after 15 minutes the theater was empty. I didn't leave. If I wanted to watch something that went for 60 minutes, I would've watched 60 minutes. If I wanted to watch an Epic Movie. I would've watched The Lord of the Rings. If I wanted to watch an awful movie I would've watched Plan 9 From Outer Space.
I won't be surprised if Aaron Seltzer becomes the next Uwe Boll, as he also directed Date Movie. By next year, he will have a trophy case full of Razzies. So if they make another movie like this next year. It would also get in the bottom 100. 2007 is starting off bad but there are better movies coming out.
An epic is an epic. An awful movie is an awful movie.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
After 25 years.... It's still great and I love it
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a well-known cult classic. I only just watched this and I have to say it was crazy and out of control but it was very funny. This movie doesn't really have a plot to it, just about an engaged couple that have a breakdown and must visit the residence of Dr. Frank-N-Furter. After that, they just sing songs and do a whole lot of crazy stuff. It is really good fun to watch. And when you do watch it, you will find yourself doing the time warp and singing the Hot Patootie. The "Sweet Transvestites" song was disturbing.
I really hope this comes back into the theaters because it will be even better at the theaters. This has taken place as one of my favourite comedies. If you haven't seen it then buy the 25th anniversary edition. Trust me, you'll love it. 5/5.
Stinky (1999)
Gross but still very funny
I don't know why I like it, I just do. This short is very gross but it is still very funny. In this short, he is standing with a brick wall in the background and he smells something gross. It's his finger. He sniffs it and dry reaches. At one point he is smiling. He smells the other finger. It's not smelly but the other one is and he continues to dry reach. Where do you think that finger has been? I think it was up his bum. Others think it might have been in his ear.
This is disgusting and typical Angry Kid. This is a funny short and if you have a weak stomach STAY CLEAR OF THIS SHORT. If you don't. WATCH IT. A simple but funny short. 4.5/5.
Cars (2006)
Lovely Little Film
This was surprisingly a good film. I had low expectations for it, I thought it was going to be American shite but it turned out to be a cute film. The plot is a pixar plot. A racing car called Lightning McQueen has to go to California for a race but is caught by the police. Of course he gets to California and does the race.
This should've won the Oscar for Best Animated Film. I can't believe it lost to the crappy Happy Feet, what the academy did was an outrage.
There are minor flaws to this movie though. It is a tad predictable and a little long for a kids film and the humour is a little American but overall I liked it.
This is the best animated film since Shrek 2 and the best Pixar film since Finding Nemo (I didn't like The Incredibles that much.) I rank this third out of the Pixar movies, just under Finding Nemo and Toy Story. 3.5/5.
Jackanory (2001)
One of their more clever ones
This is probably the only thing that I haven't given a rating for. In this Angry Kid short, Angry Kid tells the story of Little Red Riding *beep* (Speccy.) It's the same as Little Red Riding Hood except for the moral. The moral, according to Angry Kid, is the Speccy can't touch his stuff ever and is about to chop him up with the Axe until his dog starts talking.
This is one of the later episodes and it's not that hilarious. You might get a little chuckle at the end but that's about it. That's not to say it's a bad episode (it definitely isn't.) There are lots of worse ones but then again there is a lot of better ones.
I would probably give this episode somewhere in between 2.5 and 3.5/5.
Hot Fuzz (2007)
Wright has done it again
After making the highly successful Shaun of the Dead. Edgar Wright made a movie called Hot Fuzz and wow! what a great comedy. This movie will make you laugh from start to finish it's two hours that you will thoroughly enjoy. This is a spoof a cop movies like Bad Boys 2, Point Break etc.
Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) has been asked to become Sergent in a country stupid partner, Danny Butterman (Nick Frost.) While they're om the beat they come across some suspicious deaths which Nicholas thinks they're murders (but the others think they are accidents.) All the deaths link up to one thing.
Overall, I think that this is a very well made comedy. This is probably going to be one of the best films of 2007, considering the others being bad e.g. Epic Movie and Norbit.
5/5. Very well made and very well done. Two thumbs up.
Headlights (1999)
Not funny at all
This short from the Angry Kid series is one of the worst. It's not that funny. Although it only goes for a minute, I got bored after 15 seconds. All the episode is that he is sitting in the car at night time, when headlights go over him he is doing something strange. At one point he is in front of a truck. I didn't laugh at all.
Personally, I think only one or two shorts are worse than this one. If you want to watch a funny short. Watch Hardface or Bad News but there are plenty of other funnier ones than this one. This episode was boring, not funny and disappointing.
1/5. A low for the Angry Kid series.
Hardface (2000)
Loved the ending!!
I am a fan of the Angry Kid series. Most of the episodes are funny, some are bad but this one is very funny. Personally, this is one of my favourite episodes. The plot isn't too hard to follow. Angry Kid is in the bathroom brushing his teeth. He starts imitating things and he keeps doing that until he brushes his teeth so hard, the toothbrush gets stuck in his mouth. He imitates Don Vito Corleone by saying "You don't show no respect." He gets worried and calls for his Mum to help.
In my opinion, this is the second best episode. Only Bad News (the one where he choked on baked beans) is better. If you love Angry Kid, then you'll absolutely admire this episode as much as I did.
Yet another excellent episode. 5/5.
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Classic Zombie Movie
Dawn of the Dead is the first zombie movie I have seen and i thought it was very good. An epidemic of zombies are rising from their graves so two Philadelphia SWAT team members go to a shopping mall that is invaded by zombies.
This movie wasn't scary and the blood and guts are fake. Several scenes are packed with humour e.g the zombie pie-splatting scene, the Mexican guy that always takes his blood pressure etc.
Although the blood and guts look a little fake, it can look sick, so if you have a weak stomach. Don't See this. If you don't than this is recommended. 4.5/5
Snakes on a Plane (2006)
S.O.A.P is a fun roller coaster ride full of jumps and thrills
I'm not an MTV fan boy that likes all of the XXX, Fast and the furious crap. In my opinion, Snakes on a Plane is the only good M.T.V movie. The plot is simple, see title. The title should sum up the plot. The snakes start biting and killing people. And when the two pilots are killed the only one who can land the plane is one of the members of the Three G's who flew planes in a video game. That part is a parody of Flying High in my point of view. The Negro is able to the land the plane and the survivors are relieved. This is the type of movie you don't take seriously. Many people watch it and think that is Hollywood crap. That's because they take it seriously. 5/5.
Little Nicky (2000)
What a fugly movie
Some kid brought this movie when we were having a class party. Everyone says they love it. I watched it and thought why does everyone love it it is dreadful. Adam Sandler is not that good. This movie is fugly as a baboon's arse. Everything about it is fugly. The jokes, the plot, the acting, everything. I would rather die if another movie like this came out. It is the worst comedy and #2 in my bottom 5 movies. 4.8/10. No. 0.1/10 it deserves. Bottom 100 #2. It deserves to have such hate. Everyone is saying: This movie is underrated, it is brilliant and it is the best comedy. No. As I said earlier it deserves to have such hate, it is awful and the worst comedy. This movie should be burnt and buried in hell where it belongs. 0.5/5. Vomit inducing.
