Around the World in 80 Days (2021)
flat and not funny
The episodes are themed and leave out a lot details of the adventure that might be interesting.
Scientifically, the original and this series don't have a lot to stand on.
Try to fly in an unheated balloon.
Try to travel around the world without asking for the date.
Many interactions are unrealistic, trying to copycat Indiana Jones.
But worst, the characters start out unlikable, and little changes over time.
The story is no longer about science fiction, it is more a fantasy or a self-finding trip. Unfortunately, the series couldn't make up its mind and thus it is neither, or worse fails at all attempts.
Wilder (2017)
very weak plot
Just watched season 1.
The good: the cast, location and style
The debatable: kissing up to international audiences
The ugly: the plot
This series tries to borrow elements from many successful crime series across the world and relocate the action to the Switzerland alps.
Visually: true detective, cardinal (Canada)
Story elements: British (that is, not so gory)
Setting: feels in parts like Trapped (Iceland)
The directing and acting is actually decent. There is also some plausible development of characters.
As for many German TV series, there's the 'golden rule' that you can't overdo it. Boy are they wrong.
The hodgepodge of story threads is totally over the top. The concept is totally lost between them. As usual, logic and plausibility leave the vessel during the middle of the series.
Why was the avalanche not investigated (i.e. The cause, the missing persons, the witnesses etc.? What exactly was Wilder's dad's role in the explosion?
And here are some weak and abandoned threads of the story:
Where again did the foot come from to land in a timely manner in front of Wilder's car? Why introduce a pale and tamed terrorist, dutifully assassinated, into the story? Why an Arab investor with no connection to the locals? What is the police's organization - it's a total mess. The procurator's presence and local origin is implausible (if helpful to the resolution). The killing of the presumed terrorist for personal motives by a police officer. Suspended police carry on as if they were immune to prosecution. Given the solution, why again was there serious and successful blackmail under the supposition that Neurotome was at the origin of the landslide? And what on earth would a nuclear landfill look like in the middle of a alps valley?
Given that season 1 recounts the foundational, historical and very personal story of Wilder, I conclude that I should stop watching.
Vedict: They should loose their script writer as soon as they can...
