For the Love of DILFs (2023)
Entertainingly self-aware reality TV.
I subscribed for this show just for the fantastically ridiculous premise, fully expecting that it would be pretty much (hot queer) garbage - especially considering the dumpster fire that was MILF Manor. Joyfully, "For the Love of DILFs" blew my expectations out of the water. Right from the first opening narration from "Dr. DILF", it's clear that everyone involved in this show knows exactly the kind of show they're making and, most importantly, is committed to it 110%. They "storylines" are uplifting but not too complicated, drama doesn't seem manufactured, and both seasons' casts have been quite committed to the process and clearly enjoy their time on the show.
The standout, however, is Stormy Daniels. Who acts as well as you'd expect. And that's PERFECT. It's clear all the contestants adore her, and how could they not? She's so earnest and committed, joyfully happy to be involved, and always ready to throw in a devious aside poking fun at her past. Stormy is a joy to have on screen from the start of each episode right to the final "Send Nudes."
I hope OutTV funds 10 seasons of this adorable little queer dating show.
The Three Musketeers (2023)
An uninspired adaptation of the Disney movie
The bar isn't high when it comes to adaptations of the three musketeers. Recent contenders (France's Three Musketeers: d'Artagnan and The Fourth Musketeer) certainly haven't raised it. I was briefly impressed when this movie started out with far more promise and entertainment value, especially in the action and comedy department, as well as being unafraid to use color in their costuming.
This was until we quickly began to realize that all the entertaining bits were all story beats from Disney's 1993 adapation (Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, Tim Curry). After that realization we sadly couldn't unsee it.
Still, this might have been entertaining if they'd committed to a genre instead of bouncing between comedy, intrigue and wilderness survival documentary.
The 3 Inseparables were very well cast, however, and bonus points for the unexpected edition of Madame Chevreuse and Madame Coquenard showing up out of nowhere on horseback to save the day, though we're pretty sure the writers lifted THAT beat from fanfic.
This movie gets 2 stars for the 2 unexpected ladies.
Single All the Way (2021)
A fantastic new entry to the genre
I've never been a fan of cheesy Christmas movies, but Single All the Way has totally hit the mark. It's so refreshing to see classic tropes play out with a queer couple, and it only takes a little suspension of disbelief to get caught up in the holiday spirit - and romance - with them. This is the movie that my thirteen year old queer self needed to see. If even a fraction of the deluge of cheesy Hallmark movies were this sweet and queer the movie world would be a much better place.
Dragon Warriors (2015)
Like "Kung Fury", this movie is magic
It takes a special kind of movie that can own its badness in a way that's genuinely and incredibly enjoyable. This team clearly understood exactly how to deliver on this type of movie, and as such I can give this no lower rating than ten stars.
The good dose of fantasy movie farce paired with pretty good dialogue and pacing left us in stitches the entire way through. This is exactly the right movie to sit down with some beers and nerdy friends for a rowdy good time.
