Persuasion (2007)
Well meant, and well done until the end...
This novel was very different from other Austen novels, since the two characters in question, Captain Wentworth and Anne Elliot, had a past with one another. It created wonderful tension, both in the novel and the BBC's incarnation. I was completely taken with the movie, despite its missing parts of the book and my being purist.
It was not until the very end, with Anne running through the streets of Bath in search of Captain Wentworth that I lost faith. Anne is meant to be a very proper character, or she never would have broken with Captain Wentworth in the first place. To replace the scene in the Musgrove's drawing room in bath, with Anne running awkwardly through the streets is inexcusable.
For those of you that have not read the book, at least find a copy of Wentworth's letter to Anne, and you'll understand precisely what you're missing out on. Had the movie not tampered with the novel's scene, it would truly be worth the watch.
The Tribe (1999)
The Tribe rocks my world!
I'm an 18 year old that comes home from college every weekend to sit down at the television between 3:00 and 4:00 to watch "The Tribe." So what? But thats how much it hooked me. Most of the actors are high quality, and the script isn't really bad. Its pulled me in.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
Greeks, Romance, Comedy, Quality unknown actors. What more can you want?
I loved this movie. There is nothing I can say that insults it in any way shape or form. It started out as a classic fairy tale story and then turned modern. Plain girl meets handsome boy. Plain girl is immediately attracted while handsome boy barely notices her. Plain girl gets "fairy godmother" makeover and becomes pretty girl. Pretty girl gets better job and meets handsome boy again. Thats where the fairy tale story ends and the hilarity begins.
Now I'm not a fan of N Sync, but Joey Fatone was hilarious in this movie. He should really pursue a career in acting because I really enjoyed him.
I loved the quirks of the Greek family, especially the father's obsession with Windex. I'm not going to get too descriptive with this because it ruins the fun of going to see the movie for the first time! I do recommend seeing this movie, I give it 9.5/10.
Queen of the Damned (2002)
My mom always said if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. So, the novel was fantastic...
It was horrible. It might as well have been completely different story from the original novel. All of the characters...well most of them, perhaps a few...fine there was one character that came close to following the book and that was Akasha. And she wasn't even that similar. Usually, when adapting a book into a movie the screenwriter usually cuts parts to make it fit into a time slot. In this case, they cut out so much and added things that never really happened. For goodness sakes, Mael was older than the man who played David and David is supposed to be in his 60s during this time. They completely cut out Louis, Gabrielle, Mekare and the entire story of how the Vampires came to be. Then the characters of Pandora, Armand, Mael and Khayman were merely extras and only showed up at the very end. They never even speak their names. And Pandora is a Roman woman, not Indian. Khayman was young when made a vampire, not an elderly man. Marius did NOT make Lestat and he should've been typed out of the role. Finally, Lestat. There is almost nothing right about Lestat. Lestat is a BLOND and was made by MAGNUS and had several fledglings, including his mother and best friend. Thats where he got the Stradavarius violin.
Jane Eyre (1996)
Wow
I had never had the chance to read Jane Eyre, but after seeing this movie I want to. The performances of William Hurt and Charlotte Gainsbourg were absolutely magnificent. Most actors struggle with a piece of this magnitude but they did very well with it.
