Prometheus (2012)
the film resonated with me
I don't usually write a review on IMDb, but seeing the enormous amount of vitriol in some of these user reviews, I feel compelled to add my $.02.
The movie is excellent. It hasn't left my mind since I saw it over 24 hours ago. It raises many big questions & stirs your imagination in ways that few movies nowadays can.
There is much left open to the viewer, which has a love it/hate it effect. The message boards have been blowing up all weekend and all day today because people, whether they like it or not, were affected by it and feel compelled to discuss it with others.
I have given it 9/10 because there were 2 or 3 things I found unimpressive, but they are very minor and don't take away from the overall experience.
This film is a victim of it's own hype - the reputation of it's director, the legend and nostalgia of the original Alien, the successful marketing campaign - many people entered the theater expecting it to blow their minds. That is a recipe for disappointment.
Honestly, it did blow my mind. But not until I spent some time really thinking about it. The story is great, the ideas are great, the visuals are amazing, the potential is great, the possibilities are exciting - I'm excited about a possible sequel! I haven't felt this way about a film in maybe a decade! But I'm determined to keep my expectations reasonable and let the story be what it will be - not project my ideas of what it should be.
If you are open minded & can forgive a few movie clichés, this movie is for you - I found it very satisfying and can't wait to see it a 2nd time
Magic Trip: Ken Kesey's Search for a Kool Place (2011)
Great footage, interesting story, not long enough
I only had 2 issues with the film as presented - 1) the film moves at a breakneck pace trying to cram what was likely hundreds of hours of film into 90 minutes; I wanted many scenes to last longer - 2) I would've liked a 'where are they now' sort of bookend for more of the pranksters (only Kesey's and Cassady's post-prankster lives are detailed).
I thought the footage was gorgeous - the film must've been well taken care of over the years. It was really fascinating to see America circa 1964 in full color (most footage from that era is black & white).
I want to re-read The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test after buying this DVD and refer back and forth. It really does breathe new life into Tom Wolfe's book; although, the film stands on its own.
One of the most fascinating segments of the film was early on when they delved into how Kesey was turned onto LSD. They describe the whole experience and provide audio recordings taken as Kesey was under the influence in a hospital where LSD experiments were being conducted.
I understand many will take issue with the pro-drug message, but whether you like it or not, the subject of the film and the footage itself is a big part of history. There is something to learn and appreciate no matter where you stand.
Senior Citizen's Day (2007)
good, fun, student film from Atlanta
With consideration that this is a student film, I give it 8/10 stars.
With a $0 budget, Alison Himes has put together a very impressive and genuinely humorous little short film.
Almost all the jokes hit their intended mark, the camera work is nice, the shots are set up and lit very well, the talent is well cast, and the whole piece flows rather nicely.
Comedy is one of the more difficult genres to tackle for a young upstart. Not only does this young team show great promise, they made me laugh-out-loud, genuinely.
If you get a chance, check it out on YouTube and post your thoughts. And keep an eye out for the names you see in the credits as I expect you'll hear more from many of them in the not-so-distant-future.
