The Fall of the House of Usher: A Midnight Dreary (2023)
Boring
I was looking forward to this but it is not what I was expecting at all. I love Poe's stories but this ain't it. It's modernized beyond necessity and to make it more sellable I guess they have thrown in unnecessary amounts of x-rated content that add nothing to the story. It feels misplaced when almost all the characters talk about it when it has nothing to do with the story. Everyone seems to be sleeping around or having some sort of a kink AND the need to talk about it with everyone they know. I kept waiting for the actual story and ended up fast forwarding through this added stuff. I'm not beyond liking some added sex if it has anything to do with the story but come on. This just feels silly.
Oh and the Usher story beneath it all? I guess it's there somewhere...
Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence (2023)
Idiotic
Something is off here. These people are supposedly intelligent enough to get into a prestigious college and then they fall under the influence of one man- who is unemployed and was in jail? A dad of one of their friends. This guy starts hanging around at their apartment and smooching off them, sleeping on the sofa - and suddenly they start falling under his charms. What?
There are numerous recordings of them speaking, which seems off- why did they all keep recording everything they said , all the time, in every situation? Did they plan to make a movie out of it?
And come on,the wisdom this supposed manipulator was sharing all sounds so stupid these kids need to ask themselves wtf they were thinking in the first place...
Jury Duty (2023)
Not believable
As a fan of the Offce it felt like could have been better from the 1st episode, the mockumentary style of tv is something that I enjoy.. But the aspect of the one guy who's not in on it quickly lost it's appeal, the show would have been much funnier had they done it full force with only actors. The one guy doesn't work and also it's super obvious for any viewer even from overseas like me that there are people in the jury who are actors (besides Marsden)- knew Kirk Fox right away and his face would probably be recognizable by this "Ronald" dude as well. Also the trial is utterly idiotic and they should have maybe picked a little less abnormal case if they wanted to make the watchers believe Ronald wasn't in on it- I mean come on. I've watched enough true documentaries about trials to know this is not it.
The Righteous Gemstones: Interlude III (2023)
Boring
As this episode takes place in the past, it completely misses the mark. No adult Gemstone kids, not fun at all. What makes the show work are the actors, especially the siblings, and seeing them as kids doesn't interest me at all. Should have at least tried to be funny, ended up being obnoxious. Also, Judy in 2000 should be what 25 years old not a school kid. So feels weird all around.
So far season 3 has been hit and miss, so far a bit more hit than miss for me personally so hopefully it'll keep getting more hits going forward. Less past and more present would be preferable. Let the mom RIP already...
The Good Nurse (2022)
Different story
I actually hadn't heard from the true story behind the movie and thought at first they told the story close to that real life criminal- but actually there's a whole other added drama to the movie. Which is quite unnecessary and just makes the actual story feel less important, but I think they should have stuck to that and leave the added padding out. If you want to tell a real life crime story there sure would have been enough to this one without the sick female nurse. Suddenly she's more of the focus and not the man they were making a movie about.
Acting was just fine, nothing out of the ordinary of netflix production but nothing to rave about either. Never have been a fan of Remayne but he was "okay" here. Nothing like the original Cullen though- could have found a bit more unlikeable lead man.
Style and atmosphere just as you would expect a hospital icu to be, someone was commenting that it's the typical nordic style for color blind- I've never found hospitals to be full on bollywood technicolor so I think the style is just fitting. Nothing fun about the icu.
In the end it's a quite bland and tasteless movie, can listen to it on the background and not miss a thing.
Catherine Called Birdy (2022)
Silly, fun movie
It's been a long time since my teen girl years but I really liked this movie- it's not supposed to be a serious period drama but many people seem to take offense cause they might be expecting a more serious movie. For me I loved the silly characters mixed in with the historical parts of the movie. Acting was top notch and I didn't find Birdy unlikeable at all, I think her character was great- rebellious, curious and just a normal teen in a world that's not always fair.
I think the movie's 13+ rating is a bit harsh, nothing too shocking in the movie for younger kids. My 10 year old had some giggles that's for sure, and questions about the same issues as Birdy has in the movie so a great discussion starter as well!
The Outlaws (2021)
Could have been great
It would have been much better as a real comedy without the gang plot that felt weird and wasn't really interesting at all. They should have just concentrated on the main plot of the center group and made it funnier, maybe a bit mocumentary-like. The never ending wokeness in the show made it hard to enjoy. Lots of potential, but misses the mark.
How It Ends (2018)
Enjoyable
Contrary to many reviewers I enjoyed this movie because there were no real explanation to what was happening. Many times people like movies only if everything is spelled out to the them. Enjoy the ride as it is. Looked great and soundscape was also menacingly appropiate. Actors did a good job. Both thumbs up!
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)
Horrible casting
Anyone who is a fan of the games will be shocked at how badly this movie is cast.. I mean Jill is as far from
Jill Valentine as possible, Leon.. well I don't know who cast him but they must be blind. Wesker? Come on... and everyone seems dumb and slow. And the movie itself lacks all the atmosphere and feel of the games. Very, very disappointing.
Invasion: Orion (2021)
Horrible characters
Not one likable character so far. Third episode in, I don't know where this is going, keep fastforwarding as it is very slow paced. I don't even mind if a well written and acted show is slow, but this is neither. Someone said wait until episode 6, then it really gets going. Lets see...
Intrusion (2021)
Looks good
Loved the scenery, could have watched that rather than the movie itself. The actors were not very good, although given the plot who could blame them. No chemistry between them whatsoever either and this is a couple who's supposed to have been through thick and thin (she's been through cancer with her husband by her side). The first time you hear the pipes make a noise and the sheriff comments "you need a plumber" I said to my husband there's someone in the house..
It's a nice, bland movie for those days you have nothing else to watch. Otherwise just skip it.
Modern Love: Take Me as I Am, Whoever I Am (2019)
Not realistic
I've had bipolar for about 25 years (diagnosed, probably more than that otherwise), and like others have pointed out, mania or hypomanic episodes are nothing like this. Dramatic license aside, it just bothers me that it's made out to be like a musical. Otherwise enjoyed Hathaway's performance, but the rest was a disappointment.
Zero Chill (2021)
Only for kids
As an adult this show is unwatchable. But my kids (8 and 10) seem to love it. I try to keep my opinions to myself, as I don't want to be a party pooper. I don't think this is meant for young adults even, just kids.
Some Assembly Required (2014)
Love it!
My two kids (8 and 10) and myself love this show! It's not for everyone as you can easily notice from the reviews here, but for others it seems to hit the spot. Most TV shows nowadays are too woke for me, this is refreshing and funny to watch. I like the characters, especially Ellie Harvie's Mrs Bubkes is wonderful. If you liked the New Addams Family TV show you might remember her as Morticia.
This show has a lot going for it, don't make up your mind after a review, check it out for yourself!
