The Nevers (2021)
True original
This series was doomed - the Joss Whedon/#Metoo controversy followed by Covid and HBO sale, never gave it a shot. The "time jump" episode IS NOT the finale.
Great cast, unusually high production, strong female leads, compelling & surprising story - someone please PICK THIS UP!
While very similar to Canary Row in feel this is superior in every way. More original & imaginative w/ better characters. HBO should've at least allowed the entire series to be streamed. Oh! And naked James Norton.
The ending suits as a finale but also leaves the door open - these are characters the audience wants to see again.
HBO subscribers shouldn't have to go to extreme lengths to watch the second half of the season since it already exists.
Bastille Day (2016)
I wanted to love this movie...
... but it was just SO BAD. The ridiculous tropes and overacting, the ridiculously convoluted plot, and the illogical decisions made by the main characters made that impossible. What happened to Idris's accent from the wire? We know he's got it in him - but it wasn't here. Richard Madden... someone PLEASE get him a voice/dialect coach that is an actual American. One good thing - it IS watchable in the same kind of way that grey's anatomy is watchable. Suspension of disbelief and the recognition it is ridiculous. I gave it two stars because it is actually watchable and one more each for giving me a chance to drool over these two for 90 minutes.
Partners in Crime (1983)
Captures the spirit of the books!
I really enjoyed this series - especially after suffering through the more recent version. They are perfect!
Partners in Crime (2015)
Not Tommy and Tumppence
I don't know who these characters are, but they aren't at all faithful to the source material. The '80's series is much better at capturing the fun of the characters. You almost root for these fools to be beaten while watching this bumbling atrocity.
Go Fish (1994)
Worth seeing
While the technical quality of the movie may be way less than perfect, it was a NO budget, non-professional, low tech movie which managed to capture and gives voice to a lot of issues that face young queer women. I really identified with a lot of the women in the movie and saw many women I knew as well as the queer scene I was a part of in the early/mid nineties. There is one scene in particular where Max does a free-form thought bit in a wedding dress that I still think back to on a regular basis and which actually made me gasp the first time I saw it.
Virtually all, if not all, of the actors involved (and writers and director) were first timers. Given that, and the year, I think this film deserves more credit than it has been given by a lot of the commentators on this forum.
