Ferrari (2023)
Feels unnecessary
I'm a big fan of racing and if you're a fan of racing you're invariably a fan of Ferrari. So when Michael Mann helms the Enzo Ferrari biopic, there will be expectations.
Unfortunately this presentation is uninspired. I really don't agree with the casting choice of Adam Driver for Enzo Ferrari. The only thing the two men have in common is seemingly height. Driver exudes an energy that is not the neurotic Italian man that is the brains behind Ferrari. The essence of Ferrari and Italia doesn't come across in a meaningful way. Driver possesses the menace that is Ferrari, but not much else.
A fan of classic automobiles will surely enjoy the various display of now unattainable rides in the movie though.
Shôgun: Anjin (2024)
HIghest quality pilot to come out in a long time. FX could be sitting on a masterstroke.
The potential of this show is immense. The pilot not only delivers, but it makes grand promises of what is to come. I am finding it difficult to find faults with this presentation. Cinematography is on par with the best of not only TV, but movies. Sounds are equally incredible, but there is a lot of booming bass. Character and writing are outstanding. It is incredible what they have been able to create with the sets and costume design.
FX is the only studio to go toe-to-toe against HBO. No one else is capable of doing so. And with HBO's current decline, Maybe FX is the new King of the Hill.
My only nitpick would be that English is passed off as Portuguese. It confused me for a second. This is obviously a deliberate decision. I personally would have preferred if a mix of Portuguese and English were used in the beginning to cement the main language, with Portuguese slowly being phased out to full English. There are shows that have done this to good effect. Again, a minor nit pick and surely will not come up again.
Dune (2021)
Big Villeneuve Fan That Can't Stay Awake
I'm a big fan of Villeneuve movies. Sicario is one of my favorite movies of all time. Arrival, Prisoners, Blade Runner, Incendies.. All excellent. 8 or 9 out of 10 movies.
So why is it that I can't get into this movie? I really came in expecting to love it, yet after trying to watch it 2 times, I've fallen asleep.. 2 times.
It's slow, but I'm used to the pacing with Villeneuve. Perhaps the genre is hard for me to follow.
My friends who say they loved this movie, yet they can't tell me what it's about. They can't even tell me a single character's name without looking it up. All they know is that there is a giant sand worm. Even I knew that bit.. It was in a trailer.
I do want to watch Dune 2, which probably means I will have to try for a 3rd time to watch Dune 1.
Raised by Wolves (2020)
Sometimes I wish I never started it
I love this show. It ticks all the boxes for a profound TV program. Perhaps it is even a little ahead of its time. We are not currently on a cycle where AI and androids are seen as benevolent. Rather we are still living under the age of the Terminator and fear of the unknown digital future. Not to say that there are no anti-robot elements to this show, on the contrary, half the show is about believers who shun androids.
The ideas presented are well thought out and very forward thinking. It asks the right questions and has the right amount of science to keep the disbelief adequately suspended. Ridley Scott has always been a master in this regard and this show is no exception.
I would love to give this show a 9 or even 10. I could see myself doing so with closure. But as it stands I cannot give such a high rating to an incomplete product no matter how good the existing material. A true shame.
True Detective: Night Country: Part 3 (2024)
Getting weaker and weaker by each episode
Feels like a step backwards from a strong episode 2. It was a character development episode on the back of many big reveals, which has the effect of air being let out of the story that has baked so far. Questionable direction for many of the scenes this episode. They were either hollow and pointless or not well constructed. Too many of the presented scenes leave you asking inane questions that end up becoming the thread you pull at. Which unravels a lot of other fabrics of the plot. This has been a house of cards building since the beginning and it is showing warning signs of falling. The new characters introduced do not deliver in their performances. Some of the tropes they have been playing at since Episode 1 keeps coming back with seemingly no progress from before. It's now half way through the season. I expect a big episode 4 with a lot of plot progress. So far this episode 3 served a big plate of disappointment that I will be hoping episode 4 can rectify.
Tumbbad (2018)
Well produced for the budget
There are aspects of the movie that transcend its production value. Dark, moody cinematography and an interesting enough story. The rest is pretty average to mediocre. Weird sound design on the verge of being artsy. Still has a goofy element to it. Overall I would not say this is anything close to a masterpiece. It is a good platform for elevating the Bollywood format and potentially shedding some of its biases. For me it played more like an Indiana Jones than a horror. Would like to have seen more depth in supporting characters and sexier story telling to raise the bar to a true horror classic contender.
You're Next (2011)
Predictable and fails to suspend disbelief
100% of the moves are predictable. Events are extremely loosely connected. Random things happen that make no logical sense, just to move the plot. Definitely not a crispy, well-cut experience, but if you're into "the strangers" type of suspense thrillers then it may be up your alley.. Maybe.
If the intent of production was to have elements of comedy, it turned into a joke. Terrible delivery.
The 2011 vintage really shows in this flick. Main actress has a couple moments of "acting", but otherwise weak performance overall. All other supporting cast gets a pass from me.
Ultimately this film fails on the most basic of foundational ingredient of a movie; the suspension of disbelief.
The King's Man (2021)
It's not a documentary
I don't think anyone watching this takes the accounts as historical fact.
It's a fun movie with real characters from history, loosely based on events and their mannerisms. If you rate the movie poorly purely based on the fact that it is historically inaccurate, I'm afraid you've missed the mark.
