La rafle (2010)
One of the best Fench Movies in years
This movie has all I want in a film, it is informing and holds the attention. I am a great admirer of Jean Reno and he comes over here as good as ever. The acting in general was excellent and the child actors were superb with such a difficult storyline. The music fitted well to the story and allowed the feel of the movie to shine through. In all a great film which stirs the blood and makes one feel ashamed to be human. It is important to remember what happened and why we should never let it happen again, however it seems that it happens now and we do nothing about it. Long live the French film school, with a tear in my eye I end this review and think again of the many who died without a cause.
44 Inch Chest (2009)
Could have been better
Although I liked the movie it did not leave wanting more, so much was achieved, but from such a strong cast it should be expected. The use of the word c*** was excessive but understandable for the characters involved. However John Hurt's use of it began to make me laugh and his use of language at times was laughable. Ray Winstone was stunning as was Ian McShane as the camp geezer, very funny interludes from him and his colleagues. However I was expecting more, a bit of aggression but it was more fight and then flight. The story was simple and was better for that, the actors were on great form with Tom Wilkinson for me stealing the show. The music helped the story along and the decaying into madness of the main characters was entertaining and sad.
All in all an excellent movie which was well written and directed. The acting was wonderful but a little camp in places, but I can forgive that.
Armored (2009)
Good but been there before
The film had it moments, but was disappointing in my eyes anyway. It was a reworking of Trespass (Walter Hill) and so The Treasure Of the Sierra Madre, with less tension, bite and human emotion. There was some nice acting but the story was limp and lacked any real depth. I watched the movie for Mr Reno and Mr Fishburn, neither were inspired and both had little to say or act out of their skin for. This movie has been done to death in the past and did not have to be made, eats up money which could be used on better movies. For an action movie it was sparse of action and as a thriller did not thrill. Better than watching snow fall, but not for me.
