Quigley (2003)
Poorly Made
I couldn't help but uttering a sigh when I saw Quigley. Especially the beginning credits. It showed a poorly drawn dog in different environments. Not the best beginning credits. The text effects were so BORING and didn't match Quigley at all.
Quigley had no lighting effects what so ever. The background was OBVIOUSLY blue-screened. The makers didn't even BOTHER to add good effects. (Especially when Archie is in heaven. I mean LOOK at those clouds.) Through all of this, I will give Quigley two stars. One for the Special effects and one for the plot.
2/10, */****.
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002)
Has no REAL plot
Spirit has no REAL plot. This plot has probably already been taken a million times.
Spirit is is about a animal (horse) underdog named Spirit. He saves horses from a life of misery. THAT IS IT. There are many factual errors about horses here. Spirit's actions get oh so boring. Overall, predictable. You can predict every second in Spirit. You know that this whole movie will end in a happy movie.
Pretty much the only thing GOOD about Spirit is the animation. Who could resist the Disney-like animation? Personally, I think that is the only element that draws people in.
I will give this movie a 2/10, **/****.
The Shining (1980)
Suspenseful
I am a big fan of horror movies. The Shining was a combination of Horror and Suspense. You always want to try and guess what Jack Torrance's next move will be... And you get surprised. I don't know if it's the music, or the craziness of Jack Torrance, or Wendy getting all panicked and teary eyed, but this movie leaves you on the edge of your seat! You can easily follow Jack Torrance's path to insanity through this movie. Through every line of dialogue, step, or touch. It is the creepiness of this movie that drives viewers crazy. Every line in The Shining was memorable. There are a lot of creative twists in this movie.
The music in The Shining added yet another creepy effect. It is the music here that really helps the creepiness factor of The Shining.
The acting was great! Jack Nicholson was PERFECT for his insane role of Jack Torrance. When I really think about it, he is the only one that could pull it off. Shelly Duvall pulled of her role as a hysterical wife too well, but she could really get annoying in some parts.
Overall, I'd give The Shining a 9/10 for great plot, acting, music.
Alien (1979)
Awesome
Alien will always remain one of my favorite horror movies. Everything in here is very original. The music score is something to treasure. The Alien's design is so original. It is something more exotic than those green buggy eyed aliens you see in movies like 'Independence Day.' (It can't be buggy-eyed because it has no eyes.) It is the perfect predatory design.
Alien takes place in a commercial space ship named 'The Nostromo.' The Nostromo receives a signal, or a warning as they soon found out, about a strange planet. The crew decides to investigate this planet. On this planet, a giant skeleton of an Alien is found... with a hole in it's side. It soon becomes clear that something out of the ordinary happened to it. Near the skeleton, they find a huge cluster of eggs. One of the men approaches, and a hand-like creature pops out of the egg and latches on to the man's face. Later on, we find out that the hand-like creature had melted through the guy's space helmet. But then abruptly, the creature disappears.
Seated at the table, the crew eats dinner when something happens. The guy that explored the planet starts coughing. This coughing turns to wheezing. After wheezing, the rest of the crew sets him on a table. A spatter of blood appears on his shirt. Soon enough, a worm-like creature with teeth explodes out of his chest. The creature escapes, and the battle for survival is on...
The acting was very nice. Especially Sigourney Weaver, who really played her part as Ripley well.
Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
Made me think twice about calling a movie predictable!
Stranger than Fiction is one of those movies than you would try to predict, but everything turns out totally different. Here I was, at the movie theater, attempting to predict a movie with so many twists and turns. When you hear Emma Thompson's words projecting from that movie screen, your mind is elsewhere, trying to figure out what all this means. There are so many lessons to be learned from this movie. Even if you think you figured them all out, you still have many more lessons to learn.
The movie starts out with Harold Crick (Will Ferrel), an ordinary IRS agent, hearing a strange female voice in his mind. This voice narrates what is happening in his life and foretells what will happen to him. Harold figures out that he is a character in a novel... written by an author who always kills off the hero (which is in this case, the hero is Harold). And then, the author narrates that he will die. So then Harold seeks out a literature expert, Professor Jules Hilbert (Dustin Hoffman) to help him out. Jules helps him reveal the identity of the author. Harold then seeks out Kay Eiffel (Emma Thompson) to tell her that he is real and that he will die if she writes this.
Will Ferrel, Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson make a fantastic movie, as they usually do. This is easily Will Ferrel's best performance.
7/10 and Three Stars.
The Fly (1986)
Woo! A Horror movie that you will be dying to see!
The Fly was a horror movie that could stun. It's not just horror, it's romance and drama. And all in one great movie, the elements of horror, romance and drama tie together to form a spectacular performance. The movie score was terrifying and perfectly suits this gem like a puzzle piece. The Costume and Makeup Department must have had one good time transforming Jeff Goldblum into a Fly monster.
Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum), a brilliant and determined scientist, is a person that hopes to change the world. So he creates these machines called telepods, an invention that can teleport one thing to the next, one telepod to another. But he starts to see something is wrong when he tests it on a baboon. The baboon is turned inside out when the teleportation is complete. Thanks to his girlfriend, Veronica (Geena Davis) Seth fixes this problem, as in the next test, another baboon comes out of the machine alive. Seth decides to try this machine out using himself. He gets into the machine, but a common housefly gets in with him. The telepods merge Seth and the fly. Seth gets out apparently normal, but slowly, one gene by another, he is transforming into a human/fly hybrid, Brundlefly...
The acting is perfect. Tons of memorable lines. Barely any goofs. The gory effects real. Don't be afraid to watch this movie. No. "Be afraid. Be very afraid."
Totsuzen! Neko no kuni banipal witt (1995)
Wonderful!
Catnapped! is a wonderful adventure anyone would enjoy. When I first saw the DVD cover of this movie, I thought 'Ugh. This looks bad.' But I was wrong. Catnapped! has well developed characters. Each character has their own unique personality. Meeko is a questioning, sometimes whiny character. Toriyasu is a stubborn arguing character.
Now, these two kids, Meeko and Toriyasu get called to a cat world called Banipal Witt by a bunch of felines, after their pet dog, Papadoll, mysteriously vanished. (Meeko thinks that Aliens abducted him.) These felines travel in circus-like balloons, that are capable of going underwater. Meeko and Toriyasu are transported to Banipal Witt, which is full of surprises, and supported by a giant sleeping cat. On the first day, humans only transform into cats. But on the second day, as Meeko and Toriyasu soon find out, being from outer worlds transform into huge, clown-like monsters. Now, the kids only have a day to rescue Papadoll. Soon after they arrive, you soon see Papadoll. Papadoll had been transformed into a giant, purple, flying dog monster. Meeko is determined to take Papadoll back. Papadoll recognizes his owner, but the spell is broken by Toriyasu. He is not convinced that this monster is Papadoll, and shows no interest in rescuing him. He is commanded by Do-Do, a cat under a spell, to kidnap other cats, including Meeko.
This is where we meet Princess Buburina, a spoiled brat who's very touch turns beings into balloons (discluding creatures from outer worlds). Buburina has a plan to destroy Banipal Witt, and she is using the Papadoll monster to make it work. By rescuing Papadoll, they will save Banipal Witt from destruction. On the way, Toriyasu falls in love with a cat named Chu-Chu. Just before the sun rises, Papadoll is rescued and we are revealed a startling fact; Toriyasu abused Papadoll. That is why Papadoll left. After this, the kids go back to their world, and Banipal Witt is saved.
The music is very catchy and will leave you humming the tune. The music is used very well in certain situations and will make you feel just the way Toriyasu and Meeko did when they first enter Banipal Witt. Without the music, the movie would be less pleasing.
The animation is eye candy. The style in Banipal Witt is very much like a circus. The cats don't really look like cats. They look more like cat-human hybrids. The animation is very similar to Miyazaki movies. So if you like Miyazaki movies, don't miss out on Catnapped!
Doogal (2006)
Back away Slowly!
Doogal was stupid and pointless. That's the overall summary. Doogal has absolutely no real plot. The animals.... did they even look like animals? The acting was terrible. The characters... have no personality! I mean, they are all the SAME BORING CHARACTER! Each character could have had the same unique personality. But no; boring, underdog personalities. Could have done better in character development. Where there could have been jokes... PUNS! Puns! Terrible ones, at that! And Zebedee and Zeebad?! They have SPRINGS for lower bodies! The whole plot was corny. Everything was corny! Face it; the movie came out of a toy box for a toddler. Don't even bother to buy the DVD. It will be a waste of your time.
1/10..... 0/10 if possible.
The Holiday (2006)
Nice
The Holiday is a wonderful romance story with a good plot.
Plot: *contains spoilers* There are two troubled women that had recently had problems with men in their lives. Iris (Kate Winslet) has been in love with a guy for years and cannot get back to her life, especially when her love gets engaged. Amanda (Cameron Diaz)has broken up with her husband. The two switch houses and cars, (basically their lives) and fall in love with men who are locals from that region.
Acting: The acting was overall pretty good. Kate Winslet is a wonderful actor who really took on the role of Iris. Cameron Diaz overacted a bit. Jack Black was very good, taking on the role of Miles very seriously. Jude Law was very enthusiastic about his role, Graham, and was very convincing.
Music: The music fit in with every situation nicely. The melody expresses various emotions and gives a sense that you are there.
Eragon (2006)
Very Disappointing
I have read the book, and I have thought of it as a legendary fantasy adventure. When I saw that they were going to make the book a movie, I got very exited. Then came the trailers. And finally, December 15, 2006. The release date of the movie. We went to the movie on a Saturday, and I was expecting a wonderful fantasy adventure worthy of the book.
About 15 minutes into the story, I started to get disappointed. First thing I noticed, Arya's ears weren't even pointed. Eragon's description in the book was Black hair. Eragon, the main character, had blond hair and blue eyes. Doesn't match the description at all. Durza, the Shade, didn't have maroon eyes, while in Christopher Paolini's Eragon had maroon. This left me with a sigh.
(A bit of Spoilers here)
The movie jumps into the story very hastily. Eragon wakes up in the middle of the night, takes his bow and arrow and decides to go hunting, while Arya hides Saphira's egg. Eragon finds the egg in the Spine, where he is hunting. The Empires knows, when the egg hatches for Eragon and Saphira bursts out and touches Eragon. And that begins the adventure.
Important characters like Ajihad and Nasuada have only a few lines, Nasuada not even saying her name. The big battle for the Varden was too short. Most of the book was skipped, and pages in a book like that were not meant to be skipped.
Overall, the acting was okay. The special effects nice. Saphira looking awesome, although she is not supposed to be feathered. 5/10.
