The Shining (1980)
Kubrick's Mastery of Moving Images
To me, 'The Shining' is more a memorabilia to Stanley Kubrick's majestic photography. The smooth transitions, the beautiful composition of symmetric screen settings, the marvel of the Steadicam, which enables us to follow Danny's tricycle, floating on the Overlook corridors. And the images which are imprinted on the mind of the viewer even more effectively than the story itself, telling a story of their own. These are the images you think of when you talk about 'The Shining'.
Moreover, there is always a mention of Stanley Kubrick's strict and demanding attitude towards Shelley Duvall during the making of this film in documentaries. It must be Kubrick's technique to get her in to the mood to play that particular part, and the kind of feeling she needs to be experiencing in order to respond according to that of the character. This is mere speculation, but you never know.
Fire (1996)
Wonderfully Executed Drama with Touching Realism
The thing which makes "Fire" even more appealing to watch apart from its magical artistry, is its touch of femininism and rebellion. To my mind, the very character played by Shabana Azmi is a symbol of the Indian feminine protest against the Indian society. The name of the movie and the scene when Radha walks through flames in her kitchen are symbloic of Hindu Mythology's Lord Rama's wife Sita's walking through fire for the proof of her immaculacy, as per the same narrative which appears in the film too. The film could be a great inspiration for women, particularly those in the subcontinent, to search for their liberties and to attain control of their lives.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
A Superb Movie
Indiana Jones, nothing like it. A treat for everyone, truly fun-filled. Sean Connery's presence really creates some fun and variety and the Nazi stuff was fine as well. But it's all about the character of Jones, and that will never die.
