Shrinking (2023)
Amazing comfort show!
I love everything about this show and I'm pretty selective. Kudos to whoever came up with the intro. It fits the series so well! I usually skip intros, but this one I enjoy seeing. Definitely depicts the chaos of life and brain health. The cast is phenomenal. Every actor plays their character so well. The characters are each going through their own struggles, healing, and developing as the series progresses. There are a lot of heartfelt and comedic moments. Very much a feel-good show. The banter between Liz and the friend group and Gabby and Paul is the best. I breezed through it and already miss it! I hope to see many more seasons!
Unstable (2023)
Hoping for a Season 2!
I've enjoyed movies/shows with Rob Lowe from time to time and decided to give this one a chance. I flew through through it! It has an unhinged, chaotic, and dry humor style that reminded me of Parks and Recreation to some degree. I found myself invested in the characters. It has a great cast and I think it's nice that Rob Lowe's son is acting with him. He seems to be a great actor and I imagine the whole cast had fun with this show. There's room for improvement with some of the dialogue and I'm sure the science isn't terribly accurate, but it's meant to be a fun watch, not a science documentary. I think you'll enjoy it if you like this style of show. I'd like to see another season and hope Netflix keeps it around for something more light-hearted to watch!
Yellowstone (2018)
Won me over
I kept seeing clips of this show and finally decided to watch it. Three episodes in, and I didn't understand the hype. It felt slow and too similar to movies and shows I had seen in previous years with the same plot of saving a ranch or a wealthy family who controls everything. Stopped watching for a bit. Found myself giving it one more chance and it sucked me in once I got to know the characters. I'm still in the beginning seasons and hope to see more character development as the show progresses. I really appreciate the inclusion of native american heritage and actors in the show. Worth a watch in my humble opinion.
Don't Pick Up the Phone (2022)
Despicable crime
I truly feel for the victims in this case who were completely violated. It was very courageous of them to recount what happened. It made me sick that people in authoritative positions didn't question the caller. There was a good explanation of coercion. However, in the cases where it got to the point of sexual acts, it should've been an even more glaring red flag. The lack of informing employees from the fast food businesses where this occurred was an absolute failure. The lack of care from police and victim blaming is absolutely appalling for what these employees endured. I have the utmost respect for the detectives who didn't let this go and were determined to locate the person responsible. I appreciated the lawyers who fought for the victims and hearing their input. I was disappointed with the ending as I'm sure everyone involved in this case was as well. I have a theory. The guy's brother was a police officer and spared no expense with the bail and attorney. I think he purchased the cards and his brother made the calls. I wonder if they ever looked into the brother. This was a well-made documentary that highlighted the need to educate on what is not acceptable from anyone in a place of authority. I'm happy one of the victims was able to get some justice. I hope to see more justice for the others though. Either that or karma intervenes with the evil person responsible.
The Masked Singer (2019)
Needs a revamp
I started watching this aa a filler show, while I was waiting for new seasons of my favorites. I like the mystery and guessing of the singers and the interesting costumes. I like that it's not just people who are already known for singing, but includes actors, comedians, and entertainers. I'm not a sports person, so they aren't familiar to me. But I imagine people who are might enjoy that. What I don't like about the show is the incessant chatter from the judges. They continue make comments during the performances, which is distracting. The judges and host are very annoying as others have stated. It seems overly produced and scripted. I think if they replaced the judges and host and allowed more authentic dialogue, it could redeem this show. Otherwise, I don't see it lasting much longer.
Wednesday (2022)
Drats, what do I watch now?
I remember watching and appreciating The Adams Family with Christina Ricci as a kid. No, I haven't seen the original and don't care about the comparisons. Anyway, I went into this one with no expectations and was not disappointed. There were good references, but the writer, director, and cast made this their own story and did a phenomenal job. It sucked me right in with the incredible cast and characters along with the murder mystery. Definitely some twists and turns to keep you on your toes. Plenty of dark humor, and great dialogue. I really enjoyed seeing the growth in some of the characters as well. I flew through the season faster than expected. Suffice it to say Wednesday kept my attention. Can't wait for more seasons!
Spirited (2022)
Thoroughly entertaining
I've been a fan of Will Ferrell and Tracy Morgan since SNL and this one didn't disappoint! Ryan Reynolds and Will have excellent chemistry. Octavia Spencer and Rose Byrne killed it as always! I wasn't familiar with a lot of the other cast members but they did an incredible job as well. I wouldn't consider myself a fan of musicals, but didn't mind the music and singing. I enjoyed the different twist on a classic story and all of the characters. I will definitely watch this one again! This has been added to my annual Christmas movies list. If you like Xmas movies like The Elf and these comedians, you'll definitely enjoy as well. Happy Holidays!
The People We Hate at the Wedding (2022)
Delightful
What a wonderful watch. I was excited to watch this one after seeing that Allison Janey and Kristen Bell were in it along with a bunch of other great actors. There were doses of humor sprinkled throughout. Relateable family issues. Awkward moments. Some great insights. Last, but not least, there were some great heartfelt moments. The cast did a great job and although the story was somewhat predictable, it was delivered as I believe it was intended. It is definitely a feel-good movie. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who likes that genre of movies. I have it saved to watch again at a later time.
The White Lotus (2021)
Buh Buh Baaaa
I will watch anything with Jennifer Coolidge and Molly Shannon! While there are plenty of other actors that did a great job playing their characters, both of them killed it in this series! I started out intrigued then felt kinda meh and considered watching something else. Decided to stick it out to see if it developed more and find out what the deal was with these characters...haha. Glad I did. I appreciated the dark humor. Felt sad for some of the characters and disliked others. But overall, feel like it was easy to watch. This might appeal to some more than others. Depends on your type of humor. I don't think it is meant to be taken too seriously.
Stutz (2022)
Beautiful friendship and conversation
I really appreciate anything that offers education about mental health. My own journey with therapy has improved my life tremendously. I see this movie being very informative for those who may not have been to therapy yet or don't have the resources. Or just to reaffirm the tools that are learned in therapy. I hope it helps others as was intended. I found myself tearing up many times throughout the movie with Jonah and Phil's open conversations about their struggles. I also found myself laughing at their candid humor. They clearly have a true friendship and respect for eachother. It was wonderful to watch. I appreciate them sharing this with all of us. Definitely recommend!
Down to Earth with Zac Efron (2020)
More seasons please! Outstanding job of educating!
Absolutely love this series! Incredibly happy Season 2 came out and was even better. The friendship dynamic between Zac, Darrin, and the crew pulled me in immediately. I really appreciate the immersive aspect of education through their experience of different environments and showing the impact we have on nature and animals along with ways we can make improvements. They feature quite a bit on people who are paving the way towards better practices. On a global level, environmental sustainability really needs more visibility and they did a fantastic job of showing that in season 2. This series is both entertaining and informative and contributes to influencing taking better care our planet.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013)
Intriguing and entertaining
I didn't have any pre-conceived notions about this one before watching it. I saw it on Netflix and glad I gave it a chance. The story immediately pulled me in, and I wanted to know more. It had a great cast and characters I connected with. I googled it afterwards to see if there would be subsequent movies. Much to my disappointment, there weren't and a bunch of bog/reddit posts complaining that it was plagerizing Harry Potter. I enjoy Harry Potter, but I like that this movie was more adult. I feel like there are enough books, movies, and TV shows with similar aspects to Harry Potter, that people should be able to accept that by now too. Give it a chance! You might just end up enjoying it.
God's Favorite Idiot (2022)
Excellent
I don't understand the negative reviews. I suppose people have different types of humor. This is silly comedy, it's not meant for serious analysis. I truly enjoyed watching it! Melissa McCarthy and her husband did a great job. I was looking for something lighthwarted to watch. It was awesome to see a former Gilmore Girls actor in the mix as well. I think it's worth watching. Unless you hate silly comedy. Then I guess you can join Satan's team = ) I'm only sad there weren't more episodes.
Nine Perfect Strangers (2021)
Pleasantly mysterious
I dived into this one without knowledge beforehand. It was slow burning in the beginning. You definitely need to keep watching (don't just watch a few episodes). I thought each actor had a great performance. You could understand what each of the characters were going through. I found myself really rooting for them despite the craziness. Those saying the Russian accent was bad, should watch Inventing Anna = ) Nicole's was definitely not that bad! Overall a good watch.
Keeper of the Ashes: The Oklahoma Girl Scout Murders (2022)
Tragic story with awkward interjections
This story could've been told without Kristin Chenoweth's interjections of narcissistic statements and cinematic shots, making herself the focus of something she wasn't directly involved in and didn't occur to people she was close to. What happened was horrifying for those little girls and their families. It's heartwrenching to think of what they went through. A more considerate approach could've been taken here.
Welcome Home Nikki Glaser? (2022)
Not for everyone
I gave this a chance and quickly realized Nikki Glaser just isn't my cup of tea. I prefer witty and relatable humor. It seems as though Nikki's humor is immature and oversexualized. It was very off-putting how she kept referring to herself as one of the best female comics. The best female comedians I've seen don't refer to themselves that way or seem self-absorbed. Maybe others enjoy this type of humor though? I wish her all the best.
Grace and Frankie (2015)
Comical and hearfelt
I don't understand the negative reviews, but everyone has their preferences I suppose. There is lighthearted comedy, heartfelt moments, and a great cast. I appreciate the banter between the different characters and found it to be an entertaining show all around.
I Want You Back (2022)
Sweet and funny
I watched this due to being a fan of Jenny Slate and Charlie Day. It was a nice mixture of humor and sweet moments with their characters. The other characters were a bit boring but maybe that was intended so the focus would be on the main characters? Overall a good watch if you enjoy romantic comedies.
Moses Storm: Trash White (2022)
Hilarious and theatrical storytelling
I love comedians who engage the audience with their storytelling and have a natural sense of humor that doesn't feel forced. Moses Storm exceeded my expectations. I was laughing really hard throughout the special. I really appreciate that he used his experience in a positive and humorous way while also shedding light on the systemic issue of poverty. I hope he does more specials like this in the future (psst...Netflix).
Somebody Somewhere (2022)
Potentially a good show
So far I like the character dynamics and found it sad with some humorous moments. I think it's more dry/silly comedy. I'm going to keep watching to see how it develops.
