BAC Nord (2020)
Just the worst
If policing in France is like this then it is more similar to the US than I realized. Police officers who patrol immigrant neighbourhoods to harass the residents - check; policing crimes of poverty - check; abusing your power by bullying, breaking a 60-year old man's nose with impunity or making street vendors pay you with their wares - check.
And we're supposed to believe that their actions are due their frustration at not being able to truly help? Or that the neighbourhood has devolved into Baghdad and so their actions are justified? Seriously?! All this reveals is that the entire system of policing, their quotas, this fake "war on drugs" is set up to reward these behaviours. Don't try to sell me on this BS.
The Water Man (2020)
Improving the narrative on black children and families
Thank you so much for bringing a black family love story that doesn't focus on oppression. I love that this is a story of a father and son finding each other and loving each other despite living under impending tragedy and their shared love of the amazing woman in their lives. Beautiful!! Finally black children who exist outside the ghetto and who aren't abused by their loved ones. Thank you, thank you. L.
City of Tiny Lights (2016)
Hidden gem
I really liked that they didn't view the Muslim community under the prism of "jihadists" or extremists. It showed the nuances of people's lives, their communities and the complications of love as they navigate in the murky waters of how the larger society views them. It talks about betrayal and how your life can be sad when you don't forgive yourself for your past. I think it also makes a statement on the police version of justice and the back channels that they have to use in order to attain it.
A Timeless Christmas (2020)
Ridiculous and unrealistic
I usually love everything Hallmark and look forward to binging on their movies during the holiday season. However, I feel compelled to write a review about this movie despite watching it months ago. The female "love interest", played by Erin Cahill, was a lonely and desperate woman who prioritized her work life over her love life. As a result, she didn't date. Now enters a handsome and chivalrous man who is transported from the past to her time. He eagerly searches for a way back to his life, his fiancee and a life that he was somewhat bored with - his life. Instead of helping, she shows him the life that his fiancee and her new husband were able to establish without him. She essentially emotionally blackmails him to stay with her by convincing him that everyone was better off without him. The "romance" in this story is engineered and rings false.
