Baby Reindeer (2024)
10/10
Incredible series about vulnerability and loneliness
13 April 2024
There are a few series that have been released in the past few years that are truly outstanding and capture the interest and feelings of their audience. Although Normal People may be the best series to do just this in the past few years, I never thought a self narration style series would top Fleabag. But Baby Reindeer is easily on this level. Over the course of the series, through sheer courageous bravery, the narrator bears his soul revealing and relating key human conditions, such as surviving abuse, struggling with internal and external expectations, self destructive behaviour, struggling with sexuality and, ultimately, our unrelenting need for love.

But what if there is no one in your life to love you? What if you are abysmally and hopelessly alone? The stalker in this series reveals their true motivation in the final episode demonstrating that even the so-called monsters in our society are people with intense vulnerability and suffering trying desperately to survive and find happiness.

To quote a movie from the 90s, "the only real currency in this bankrupt world, is the true feelings uncool people share with each other in the middle of the night". This series is rich with real currency. Enjoy it.

Black Mirror: Beyond the Sea (2023)
Season 6, Episode 3
10/10
One of the best episodes yet!
25 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I have no idea why so many people are giving this episode a poor rating. I must say that the story was absolutely outstanding. It's gripping, highly interesting, and really engaging on a human level. The episode contains exploration of relationships over distance, coping with tragedy and loss, putting your life in the hands of others, and infidelity. The acting is outstanding and matched by fantastic storytelling. Charles B has really hit his mark and season 6 keeps getting better and better. There is an interesting plot hole in that the replicas should have been sent to space rather than the actual people. Also, do not understand why everything in earth is set in the 60s. That aspect was quite strange. Overall, though gripping, engaging and very enjoyable.

Season 6 is Best Yet
25 June 2023
These episodes keep getting better and better. Episode 1 was quite good but this episode hits it out of the park. Phenomenal examination of modern culture and human behavior through the lens of something as banal as contemporary true crime documentaries. Fabulous episode. Well acted. Brilliant pacing and storytelling. I love season 6 so far and highly recommend it. Not sure why the reviews are not higher. Charlie Booker has really hit a groove with season 6. Wish there were 10-12 episodes not only 6. At any rate, this episode was absolutely brilliant and enjoyable. Some of the twists you see coming but at the end the saying careful what you wish for couldn't be more true. Enjoy!

2Pac was and will be forever the GOAT
4 June 2023
This docuseries is outstanding. It really traces the political activism and beauty/power of 2Pac's music and activism to his mother and Black Panther roots. There is some controversy about Allen Hughes making the docuseries but Hughes does an outstanding job. Frankly, it is SO DAMN unfortunate that 2Pac was not in Menace 2 Society. Wish 2pac was still alive. There will never be another Rap artist with as much integrity, dignity, intelligence, courage, and love for Black, disenfranchised and underprivileged people. That's why 2Pac is loved everywhere around the world. Do yourself a massive favor and watch this docuseries. Watch it twice.

Complete Melodramatic Nonsense
25 April 2023
This is both silly and nonsensical and in no way mirrors true healthcare delivery through the NHS or, really, medical practice anywhere.

Do yourself a MAJOR favor and watch "This Is Going To Hurt" instead. That series is absolutely brilliant, honest depiction of care in the NHS, and extremely well-acted and produced. Phenomenal series.

Dr. Death is also interesting to view a true story depicting absolutely insane medical practice across the pond. It does not have the same engeament, story, or brilliance of This Is Going To Hurt, but it is a good medical series.

Malpractice is pure nonsense and bears no resemblance to reality. One hour of my life I'll never get back....

Garbage Propaganda
15 July 2022
Typical, unfunny, silly, garbage propaganda. Work hard in America (even as an immigrant) and you'll become a millionaire with your only problem being marrying your daughter off to an even richer family. Worse, this garbage-fest also features an anti-Cuban / pro-American line about immigrant opportunity topped with "pre-Castro Cuban cigars." This movie can only be tolerated by those with advanced brain rot.

Save yourself 2 hours and watch something actually interesting or entertaining.

Never Seen Such a Stupid Movie In My life
23 April 2022
Couldn't even get through this ridiculous, silly mess of a movie. No idea what Jake was thinking? I hope they paid him really well to star in this trash.

Don't waste your time. And if you do, at least you were warned.

Very good movie re tough topic
11 December 2021
Excellent, nuanced, touching movie about a difficult issue.

100x better than the silly Power of the Dog (which is nonsensical, boring, and has a ridiculous ending).

However, the best movie on this topic is far and away The Crossing Guard with good old Jack Nicholson.

Engrossing, touching, extremely well done
7 December 2021
Touching, engrossing, extremely well done examination of the opioid epidemic. Moreover, it beautifully demonstrates how the root of capitalism drives the actions evil greedy monsters like the Sacklers contour-posed to the helplessness an suffering of ordinary people caught in their wake.

It is probably an anathema to most people how Bill Gates would choose to convince Oxford University not to release the patent to the COVID vaccine but this show demonstrates the psychology behind these evil greedy capitalistic monsters.

I hope one day they all receive the justice they deserve.

Boring, silly trash
15 November 2021
Unfortunately, with a few exceptions, most Apple TV shows have been awful.

Acapulco is no exception. It's boring, silly, not funny at all. I have no idea how these shows get approved or how anyone could give this more than 2 stars? It is seriously not entertaining at all. It's painful to get through an episode.

Skip this garbage; if you are looking for something funny, light and original - watch Only Murders In The Building.

If you are a super Apple fan boy and need to watch something Apple - watch See - it is far more original, interesting, well-acted, and well-produced.

This show is pure silly garbage.

Cliche Hollywood Garbage Ending
28 October 2021
This series starts out phenomenally well. It's gripping, interesting, intelligent, and has decent character development.

The first 4 episodes are excellent. Unfortunately, in episode 5 the series takes a dramatic turn for the worse and becomes cliche, stupid, pedantic Hollywood garbage. I am so shocked at ending of this series. It is as though Network execs stepped in and took over writing the series.

Honestly, save yourself the time and misery. I had to fast forward most of Episode 6 because I was so shocked an the inanity and stupidity of the series end.

There are MUCH better series out there. This one will let you down hard.

I didn't think they could top Season 1
6 September 2021
This show is brilliant. Absolutely phenomenal historical evaluation of the crime that capitalism produces intertwined with the story of Malcolm X. Phenomenal. Season 1 was one of the best. Thought Season 2 could not live up to it, but incredibly Season 2 is actually better. Sadly, I fear there will be no Season 3.

Haunting ending of a beautiful movie.
20 August 2021
I would strongly suggest you watch this movie and draw your own conclusions.

This movie has political overtones as it casts as its central protagonist a southerner who in real life may very well have voted for Trump in 2016. Therefore, liberal rags like NYT or the Guardian or other sources of "truth" for media reviews cannot forgive this mortal sin or judge this film fairly.

But this movie is not about politics and it is not about Amanda Knox. It is not a thriller and it is not about Oklahoma or France.

This movie is a character study. It illustrates how love can transform our lives and change everything we thought we knew.

It is powerful and the final words are simultaneously awesome and haunting.

Don't miss this one. And don't bother what anyone else has to say. Just watch it and judge for yourself.

Please Spare Yourself this Horrendous Garbage
26 June 2021
This movie is completely nonsensical. There is no story. You waste 2 hours of your time confused, upset, and hoping that the ending will salvage all of the time you wasted. It doesn't. In fact, it makes you want to kill yourself it is so stupid.

Trust me, this is an absolute waste of your time. One of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life.

absolutely phenomenal - shame US audience may not see
25 June 2021
This is an absolutely phenomenal series. Lesser known in North America but easily better than most US programming. Cast is outstanding, story in so engaging and eye opening. On par with Sex Education. Really great series - hope it gets some exposure to North American / European audiences.

Absolute Garbage
3 May 2021
Bellingcat is a garbage propaganda organization designed to disseminate false information on behalf of the US imperialist government. In the NYT news article, they describe the skills of the chief editor as being derived form "playing video games." I am actually not joking. The only people that would find this "documentary" entertaining are the most poorly informed and unintelligent among us. Skip this garbage and watch a real documentary instead, like recent Exterminate All The Brutes series.

Fantastic subject / Terrible movie
15 February 2021
I wanted to LOVE this movie. The story of Fred Hampton, like Huey Newton and the Black Panthers, needs to be told. It is so relevant and important, particularly the emphasis on socialism and the rainbow coalition. Could not be more timely.

But the execution of this movie is awful. It is boring, the character of Fred Hampton is poorly developed, too much emphasis on the Judas character, and worst of all the dialogue is very hard to understand. Seriously, for all those people giving 10 stars, please go back and watch Malcolm X. If this movie deserves 10 stars, then Spike Lee's movie deserves 10,000 stars.

Watch One Night In Miami instead - absolute masterpiece. I wish they had got King to direct this movie as well.

Absolute Garbage
11 February 2021
This show is literally a family of psychopaths (that we are supposed to somehow sympathize with??) walking around indiscriminately killing people without ANY consequences whatsoever. There is no story, suspense, interest, imagination, NOTHING. It is childishly stupid and mind-numbingly boring.

Don't waste your time.

way too long - completely lost interest
27 January 2021
Movie started ok but then just went on forever. There is a point when a hospice nurse promises Casey Affleck "it wont be much longer". I found myself really hoping she was right. The movie covers multiple issues without any focus. It just meanders forever.

Watch Still Alice with Julianne Moore. MUCH better movie.

Humanizes Legends. King deserves an Oscar and all the awards.
21 January 2021
I thought it was a lot of hype. I was wrong. It is literally a breathtaking movie. Just unbelievable. Not sure I even have the words. It humanizes legends I thought I knew everything about.

It is brilliant in every sense. Do yourself a favor and watch it.

Beyond stupid. Do not waste your time.
6 December 2020
This movie is comically stupid. Honestly, it is a complete and total waste of your time. It is not suspenseful and just poorly made. I have no idea why sensible people in the studios don't veto garbage like this. Anyone giving a positive review is providing false information or affiliated. Trust me. Horrendous.

Best Episode of The Entire Series
8 September 2020
This episode is easily the best of the series. Everyone comes together in a complex plot culminating in a major cataclysm of a party centred around an amazing speech by drunk Otis. Beautiful, stunning, raw, tender - just magnificent. The writers deserve a standing ovation. Loved it.

Decnt Series but Not As Good as The First (2018)
6 September 2020
They made a series lead by Sean Penn called The First (2018), which is almost the exact same premise. In fact, I'm a bit surprised that this series got made without copyright. Sub Swank for Penn and you have Away. The difference is that The First is more futuristic, more realistic portrayal of the real-world obstacles that need to be surmounted (to go to Mars) and much more interesting/deeper character development. For those interested in a series like this, watch The First. I guarantee you will find it much more enjoyable. Unfortunately, though, the First did not get renewed for a second season. Frankly, I would be surprised if Away gets renewed.

Absolutely Incredible
17 May 2020
I am not Irish nor have ever been to Ireland, but the themes, emotions, and human interactions are universal. This is easily the best TV series I have seen in 10 years. The writing, directing, cinematography and acting is beyond description. The series creator, writer, director and actors deserve ALL the awards. Don't miss this one.

Star Trek: Picard (2020–2023)

Bad Reviews Are Silly
26 March 2020
I am really dumbfounded by all of the negative reviews of Picard. I want to say upfront that I am a massive fan of TNG. Picard is not TNG. I am not sure if people were expecting a new season of TNG in 2020? If so, you should consider yourself very silly. Picard is absolutely masterful. It is engaging, interesting, thought-provoking and, most importantly, relevant. What made TNG so wonderful was the exploration of philosophy and ethics through reflection of modern events and issues in the 1990s within the context of a better, more just future. That was 30 years ago!!!! Picard manages that same philosophical self-reflection but of our modern western world in 2020. Some things are better, many things are worse. That is simply our reality and if holding a mirror to ourselves makes fans upset, then you have been incredibly self-deluded. What is so absolutely fantastic about Picard is how the creators and Patrick Stewart have been able to integrate elements of TNG into a novel and updated world of Star Trek and the character of Picard himself, who is not the same Captain we watched and grew to love, but an Admiral 30-years his senior at the twilight of his life and career. We should all be so lucky. Please do not listen or allow any of the silly reviews on this website to bias you. Give Picard a chance. Do not go in expecting TNG. Expect something new, something older, something different, something engaging, a show that not only holds a mirror to modern times through a TNG-colored lens, but to you yourself; an older, more experienced you, one that grew up watching and loving TNG.
