Fleabag (2016)
Sensational Telly
Crafting a compelling show is an art form in itself. Narrating a story using color, camera angles, dialogue, and performances constitutes an art form, irrespective of whether viewers recognize it as such.
"Fleabag" is undeniably a pinnacle of television artistry, weaving emotions through its use of color, camera work, dialogue, and acting. The show's ability to evoke a range of feelings from tragedy to comedy is reminiscent of a masterful painting. Central to its brilliance is the ingenious use of the fourth wall, drawing viewers into Fleabag's world and allowing for personal interpretation.
Critics dismissing this technique as a mere 'gimmick' fail to appreciate its integral role in elevating the show to a work of art. While the first season may have felt experimental, by the second season, "Fleabag" finds its stride, introducing compelling new characters and showcasing stellar performances from the cast.
One of the show's strengths lies in its pacing; it never drags, leaving viewers eagerly anticipating each episode while avoiding the fatigue that can come with overstaying its welcome. Ultimately, "Fleabag" is a sensational piece of television that leaves audiences craving more, a testament to its artful storytelling and unforgettable characters.
Doctor Who: Heaven Sent (2015)
Moffatts Masterpiece
Undoubtedly, this episode stands as a pinnacle in the history of Doctor Who, showcasing unparalleled excellence. Peter Capaldi's extraordinary performance seamlessly intertwines with Moffat's emotive and beautiful writing, crafting a captivating 50-minute speech that keeps viewers utterly engrossed. It embodies the essence of what Doctor Who represents and should aspire to be.
In terms of quality, this episode stands alone, setting an unbelievably high. It serves in stark contrast to Chibnall's work with Jodie, leaving those episodes as nothing but a laughing stock in the shadows of its brilliance.
What a work of Art!
Family Switch (2023)
Fun
Is it going to win anything? No. Definitely Not.
Is it completely harmless light hearted family Christmas viewing? Yes.
The cast put in expected performances to create a film with a cheery plot, character arc and slightly overdone key themes which allow this movie through its digestible run time.
There is no exciting cinematography happening, anyone clicking on this on Netflix this holiday season isn't expecting an iMAX spectacle, and anyone who is might need to adjust their selection process. Yet, the Dolby atmos mix sounds acceptable in larger scale home theatres and its HDR vision representation isn't sore on the eyes.
Overall?
It's exactly what I expected. I enjoyed it for what it was.
Shrinking (2023)
Funny, Engaging, Well Written, nicely shot.
I rarely give a 10. I usually save 10/10 ratings for cinematic masterpieces, but this series deserves it. Not alone for its warm editing and tasteful cinematography - but - for a well-constructed story.
It's refreshing to see this show not take itself entirely seriously with comedic highs. Still, unlike other comedies, it has a real depth to the story - something Ted Lasso (another Apple TV+ series) had done well.
The series also handles music well, with a nice mix of considered songs and unique compositions.
I have very little to say negatively about this show. If I had anything, and this is a minor concern - it can, at points, lean too heavily into the key themes. Even having said that these themes make the show what it is. And that is fantastic.
Our Universe (2022)
A truly spectacular visual and audio experience.
The actual show is good, nothing special, an enjoyable watch. It offers a different experience in comparison to more traditional works by BBC Studios.
But... with OLED Dolby Vision display technology partnered with a full Dolby ATMOS surround sound system (7.1.4) it can and will move you to tears. It's an Art work not a documentary. Fantastic. The CGI and the stories come to life in a spectacular fashion impossible on a phone, tablet or standard TV.
I think the best way to describe this series is that it's the best tech demo there has ever been. I wouldn't be watching it if I didn't have OLED and surround sound.
Sex Education (2019)
Moments of True Brilliance
Following the outstanding final episode of Sex Education, the whole run of 4 unique seasons can be genuinely appreciated.
The original cast provides stunning performances aided by masterful set design, staging, costume and cinematography. Throughout all its episodes, the show maintains a standard of technical brilliance in its use of the camera to tell its story. Our attention is captivated by the heart of its core story, carried by writing that is among the most unique and different in Netflix's catalogue.
That's not to say Sex Education is flawless; it can, at times, find itself chasing its tail, with what feels like storylines and key themes dragged out or created entirely for the sake of it. Season 4 is undoubtedly the most potent example of this when we're introduced to a cohort of new characters and stories, all of which feel like they exist solely to keep sex education 'contemporary.'
Sex Education's four-season journey is remarkable, culminating in an outstanding final episode, arguably one of the best last episodes I've ever seen. Despite some occasional missteps, the series as a whole remains a standout in Netflix's catalogue.
Ambulance (2016)
A cinematic masterpiece
A fantastic documentary following the ambulance service. Yet another of the BBCs great documentaries.
How I Met Your Mother: Bedtime Stories (2013)
The worst episode by a mile.
It's clear this show is well past it's peak after you get to this episode. The whole storyline has been dragged on far too long. It's evident this episode was just to fill a slot. Season 9 should have never existed the story should have been wrapped up at the end of season 7.
The Masked Singer UK (2020)
A waste of everyone's time.
Cancel it... it's really is that bad. The show drags on for countless hours and the style in which its presented is nothing but over exaggerated mind numbing personas.
