Derailed (2002)
Only for Van Damme and Harring fans who "need" to see it.
The only reason to watch this movie is to fulfill an obsession. So in some ways, the "quality" of the film is of somewhat secondary concern. Without Van Damme this film would never have been made, and that should speak to the quality of the plot, writing, direction, editing, etc.
For any action fan looking for a Van Damme flick, I'd rather see Sudden Death again. It's same movie (as they all are) but set in a hockey rink instead of a train.
For Harring fans who want to catch her in a film with more screen time, I'd rather see Loco Love. She's better there, in all regards, and so is the film.
Derailed is fine for late night television viewing or to fulfill an obsession, but not much else.
Mi casa, su casa (2003)
You get what's advertised...and a little more
The movie's a light romantic comedy. So how deep can the script really get? The story is harmless, and the humor is sweet, simple, and steady. The low budget only adds to the charm. They find some nice locals and have a simple but effective soundtrack.
The cast is familiar and gets the job done. It is more interesting to watch Laura Harring try on a different role than to see Hugh Grant once again reprise his "usual" character in another equally implausible romantic comedy. It is satisfying to get more smiles and laughs from a film that has far less budget and star power than the weak "You, Me, and Dupree".
It's worth the watch because it's what you expect...with a little more.
