Brain on Fire (2016)
Um, what was the treatment?
What was the actual treatment??? Movie was too short, it just ran through the story, and did not adequately address the subject matter. Stories like these need to be told in order to bring awareness to medical complexities that the western medical system all too often fails to solve, so it's disappointing that more time and attention was not spent covering the actual cure.
Luce (2019)
Outstanding
Hollywood take note: We need more movies like this one!!!! An intelligent, complex, thought-provoking, tense drama thriller. This movie is about a lot of things.... the fight of good vs. Evil within a person, racial identity in America, the immigrant experience, youth culture, the struggles of parenting, and other issues, and it all comes together perfectly. Highly recommend watching this twice, it will make more sense the second time around. This held my attention completely throughout and gave me a lot of food for thought. Excellent performances all around.
What the Health (2017)
Unscientific agenda-driven propaganda
The one thing this 'documentary' gets right is that the western 'healthcare' system does nothing to promote good health. It is a big-pharma driven system that focuses on symptom management with drugs and more drugs, rather than treating the root causes of illness.
Other than that, this is a hit on the meat and dairy industries by a vegan, animal-rights nut. The information on nutrition provided by his cherry-picked 'experts' is incredibly off base in every way. They actually say sugar has no correlation to diabetes.
A vegan diet simply does not provide the nutrition the human body needs. It does however lead to chronic malnutrition, and even cognitive impairment due to a lack of B vitamin intake. Continuous B deficiency can cause symptoms resembling dementia.
I could go on and on about the misinformation in this piece.
Also, it was cringeworthy watching this clown call the ADA, AHA, and other alphabet government agencies and grill the receptionists who answer the phone about why the organization as a whole does not denounce meat and dairy. Cringe!
I will give him a point though for calling out Susan G. Komen, not because they 'promote dairy consimption', but because they are a big pharma shill with no interest in finding an actual cure for breast cancer.
Pharma Bro (2021)
Glamorization of a psychopath
An amateur 'documentary' by an idiot fanboy 'journalist' that essentially just glamorizes this pharma boy human garbage can, and tries to paint him as some sort of eccentric and misunderstood genius. Gross. Don't waste your time, there is nothing redeeming to this at all. Go to Neflix for some quality true crime documentaries.
Downfall: The Case Against Boeing (2022)
The rich are immune from liability
In this sick upside down world, a common person can spend three decades in prison for snatching a purse, while the CEO of an aircraft manufacturer that killed 350 people in 5 months can walk away a multi millionaire. Despicable and disturbing. This is a very worthwhile documentary, although it will make your blood boil. Basically, Boeing, which previously had an impeccable safety record and was revered around the world, decided to f- with an absolutely flawless workhorse of an aircraft; and install a completely unnecessary computer system that overrides pilot control to compensate for a horrible aircraft redesign - without even telling the pilots about it. Within months of these doomed modified aircraft being put into service, two brand new jets dropped out of the sky. Instead of taking responsibility, Boeing resorted to xenophobic accusations against the pilots/airlines and their countries of origin, actually saying this would not have happened with US-based airlines. Disgusting. I hope the families of those murdered at the hands of corporate greed and irresponsibility drive Boeing and all those complicit into the ground - yes, pun intended.
Claire in Motion (2016)
Sad and infuriating
Infuriating that anybody would do this to their life partner, but it happens all the time, and usually by men. The fallout is very sad, and the left behind partner is left trying to pick up the pieces. In my opinion (based on the dizzy spells, skydiving, and other weird behavior), the guy was dying, and went off somewhere to end his life alone. Still completely inexcusable to disappear like that. An added complication here is the student artsy ditz who he was at the very least having an intense emotional affair with. If I were Claire, I would have handed this homewrecker her behind on a plate several times over, but that's me. In any event, sad that people do this to their partners, it's unfashionable in my mind actually, but it happens every day (and read the book titled 'happens every day' for a disturbing similarly-themed memoir).
Take Me to the River (2015)
Good until the end
Movies like this that drop off a cliff without resolution automatically lose credibility with me. It's an obnoxious modern film making trend that needs to stop. This is an otherwise engrossing and tense drama, but after taking you on this emotional trip it results in a non-ending like too many movies these days. It's not clever, ira but hip, it's obnoxious. Directors, please stop doing this.
The Dinner Party (2018)
Outstanding!
Intriguing, fascinating, smart, and sometimes comical thriller. A hidden gem that I'm so glad I came across. The screw-up brother is absolutely hilarious. Will be watching this again and again.
IRL (2019)
Good story and then another non-ending
I'm so very sick of these non-endings. This trend needs to stop. It's not fair to take a viewer on an emotional roller coaster and then end it abruptly with no resolution.
The Tinder Swindler (2022)
Gullibility at its worst
No sympathy for these empty-headed women who would fall for this kind of a ridiculous scam. How does an adult woman fall for this kind of nonsense, to the tune of shelling out $250K to a shady stranger??? How embarrassing for the female species, and I'm a woman.
Red Letter Day (2019)
Quite good!
An entertaining, better than average horror flick. If you liked 'The Purge' series, you will enjoy this. Ignore the negative Nellies, I'm not sure why so many people on this site rag on everything. They should invest that energy into making their own movies since they obviously know best! Really, if you like horror, give this one a try, it's a cut (har har) above the rest.
Furie (2019)
Disgusting
Starts out as a thriller with real promise, then devolves into an absolutely sickening snuff film. If you're a psychologically healthy person, you will be revolted by this.
Aquaman (2018)
What a waste
World hunger could have been solved with the money it took to make this garbage, and the money paid by the idiots who paid to watch this. Idiotic content for idiotic people.
No Country for Old Men (2007)
More Hollywood degeneracy
Sickening violence upon more sickening violence. How entertaining. Anyone who enjoys this type of degeneracy needs to get their head extensively examined.
I Smile Back (2015)
The devastation of bipolar disorder
Bipolar disorder is a demonic disease. One of the things that makes it so hard to treat is the notoriously high rate of medication non-compliance among patients, as seen in the movie. Addiction, also as seen in the movie, is not a stand-alone disease; it is a byproduct of trauma, and/or other mental illness, and until the root causes are addressed, addiction treatment is unlikely to be successful. Strong performance by Sarah Silverman. The husband got on my nerves, and instead of helping his wife, was ready to walk away from the marriage at any given moment. So much for in sickness and in health.
Mammoth (2009)
The root of all evil
The movie is less about an affair, and more about the completely screwed up socioeconomic systems of our world. Money is indeed the root of all evil, and this is a very well-made film, wity interweaving stories, depicting the havoc that chasing money wreaks on people, families, and entire societies.
The Lodge (2019)
Brilliant
The Lodge is by far one of my favorite suspense movies, and that's saying a great deal. This is a masterful film which takes its time in building up the suspense and dread that builds up to a shocking finale. If you have a short attention span and/or a taste for cheap slasher horror, this will not be your cup of tea.
A man is raising two young children, a boy and a girl, after his soon-to-be-ex wife commits suicide because he's leaving her. The suicide scene is utterly shocking. Alicia Silverstone, although her part in the movie is very brief, does a fantastic job in this role.
The man has a younger girlfriend who, predictably, the kids hate.
In a foolish attempt to get the girlfriend and kids to bond, he leaves the three of them alone at a remote cabin for several days while he leaves for work. What could go wrong, right?
The two brats devise a horrible and elaborate prank to play on the already mentally fragile woman, and keep at it even when they see that the woman's psyche is starting to break.
The prank ties in to the woman's extremely troubled childhood, in which she was the only surviving member of a suicide cult.
Eventually the kids realize they've pushed the woman too far, and attempt to stop the prank, but at that point, it's too late, as the woman has had a complete psychological breakdown, and a chain of increasingly shocking events is set in motion.
Riley Keough is FANTASTIC in this role, she carries the movie.
Visually, the movie is absolutely stunning.
I won't give away the ending, just watch this and you can thank me later. This one will stay with you.
Earthquake Bird (2019)
Amazing until the end
I'm getting so frustrated with non-endings like these. Terrific, beautiful, haunting, well-paced movie, and then.... It falls off a cliff with no resolution at all, nothing. Super frustrating, and this trend really needs to stop.
Wounds (2019)
A modern version of 'The Lost Weekend'
This is a scary movie, but if you're looking for jumpy cheap horror, this ain't it. I don't think most people caught onto what this movie is really about - alcoholism and the deterioration of one man's psyche because of it. It's not about bugs people, learn the meaning of a metaphor and stop taking everything literally. This is a modern and more sleek version of 'The Lost Weekend' which if you haven't seen you should. The phone storyline wasn't really relevant to the story except for the fact that finding the phone was the beginning of the bartenders descent into paranoia and psychosis. The ending, though abrupt, made sense given the context.
The Constant Gardener (2005)
Good story with a terrible ending
Great, engrossing story, only to fall off a cliff at the end. It's almost like the filmmakers ran out of money and ended the movie abruptly with no actual ending whatsoever. Ridiculous. Directors that do this should be barred from making any further movies.,
Marriage Story (2019)
Frustrating
An entertaining story with great acting, without a doubt. But it is so frustrating and maddening being reminded how badly innocent people can suffer at the hands of our (entirely broken) 'justice' system. My heart went out to Charlie, and I found Nicole's selfish and arrogant behavior deplorable. What Nora said about the system rewarding bad behavior is 100% true, I've llived it myself. Again, an entertaining movie, but left a bitter taste in my mouth at the end.
I Care a Lot (2020)
Ugh
Started off great. Of course the expectation is that this evildoer will get everything that's coming to her, but ultimately that's not the way it happens. The lead character faces a consequence at the end, but the outcome is uncertain, and it doesn't make up for the magnitude of her (and her 'partner's') evil actions. A frustrating movie. Any normal person with a moral compass will feel angry at the end of this, and that's not the feeling I wanted to end with. So much potential but went in an ugly and disappointing direction.
Tread (2019)
Well done, Marv!
Hopefully this will be a lesson that ruining people's lives can have drastic consequences. But I doubt it, because the sadistic jerks that bully and push people to despair never seem to learn. Marv did what he needed to do and IMO succeeded in his intentions. The Thompson family and their enablers should burn in hell.
Imaginary Order (2019)
Excellent
Intriguing and funny drama about life, about facades, and how things can and do unravel despite our best efforts to keep everything under control. Excellent performance by the lead actress. Very, very good film. The low ratings are baffling, I really wonder what it would take to please most of these reviewers. They probably think Citizen Kane is garbage. Ignore the bad reviews, give this one a try, it's a couple of hours well spent.
The Serpent (2021)
Initially intriguing, but too long
Interesting story, but as others have said, way too long. Eight (long) episodes was too much. Should have been no more than six, at most. The jumping around in time was also annoying and confusing. Interesting, true story, but badly executed.
