Yakamoz S-245 (2022)
Captivating
I found this to be a compelling story. As I watched the series in Turkish, I am unsure as to whether some of the negative reviews may be due to dubbing or translation. I found the acting to be strong, except for Umut, who I thought overacted in several scenes. This is the first scifi Turkish series I have seen and I had somewhat low expectations, but was pleasantly surprised with the production values and the story line. I thought I would watch a couple of episodes but ended up binging on the whole 7 episodes. Kivanc Tatlitug, a former model, has come a long way in his acting abilities. I am already looking forward to the next season to see how things will play out.
50M² (2021)
Captivating
I was drawn into the story line from the first episode. You'll have to excuse some lapses in the plot (i.e. how did the bad guy escape), but overall, it was a good blend of drama and interspersed comedy. Some of the plot twists were unexpected, which is always a plus from the other formulaic series. The lead actor, Engin Ozturk, was cast very well in the role and I found him to be believable during his quest for his identity. I stayed up way past my bedtime to watch all eight episodes, which is a strong testament from me. I recommend the series and am looking froward to the second season.
Bir Baskadir (2020)
Compelling, but a bit predictable
My wife and I watched all eight episodes in one sitting. The story line was compelling and did a good job in capturing the nuances amongst the different layers of society in Turkey. The way that the secular elite view those who are religious was on target and it was refreshing to see this topic addressed. As some other reviewers have mentioned, there were too many coincidences for my liking and when I can guess the exact words coming out of the characters' mouths or foresee the plot twists 5 minutes before they take place, it makes me believe that the script is somewhat formulaic and weak. There were also some events which were not quite believable (did no one think that Ruhiye may have run away back to her village?) that made me question the scenario in general. In spite of the above, I found the acting and character development to be convincing. I would look forward to a second season to see how the imam's daughter is faring with her love interest and whether Meryem accepts the proposal.
