Christiane F. - Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo (1981)
The benchmark for all other drug films but where is the missing footage?
This is such a compelling film, I was not really prepared for what I saw. I had read some reviews and watched the trrailer but it did absolutely nothing to prepare me for the sheer realness, tragedy and depravity that is thrown at us with no holding back. It deeply affected me the rest of the year after watching it last april. This film is so real that it actually leaves me thinking are they actors or is this a real life documentary? Obviously we know they're actors and most did not do anything else after or before this film. It's a one hit wonder really in many ways. Anyway the reviews on here say it all better than I can so no point me stating the obvious. One thing I want to point out that no one else seems to have picked up on is why are we not shown the whole film? I was quite disappointed at the end to see it had just ticked over the 2 hour mark and it should have gone on another 15mins! There are mentions of cuts being made for its release but only a few seconds. It seems for some strange reason the DVD releases are 2hrs but the orginal theatrical versions were either 130mins or 138mins.
Starlet (2012)
Just because it's unpredictable does not make it good
What a terrible film. Whoever thought of this is obviously backwards in more ways than one. It could have been made into an absolute gem but it fails horribly. The acting isn't that fantastic, the directing is awful, the camerawork is shocking and the soundtrack is totally appaling. Nothing, absolutely nothing in this film makes any sense, it flicks quickly between scenes regularly and fails to offer much explanation as to what is happening and why. Yes its unpredictable but that actually makes it even less appealing. There's no real relationship built up between the woman and girl and all the things you want or expect to happen just don't. I was totally shocked at the ending, which again makes no sense especially after the confrontation with the girls friend. Absolute waste of time and effort watching this, one of worst films I've ever seen.
Before I Disappear (2014)
One of the best out there
I agree totally with the high reviews here, but the low reviews are from people who just don't get it, never been through what the film portrays or don't appreciate that other people do go through this stuff. It touches my heart & soul this film. Shawn just got it 100% accurate unlike the majority of other film makers. Everything here is perfect, well ok the soundtrack could have been a little better and thats the ONLY reason i give it a 9 rather than 10. The acting, production, directing and writing are as good as it ever gets. Yes its storyline is a depressing one but he adds some fantastic humour to it to keep it from being too depressing. Another great thing is its not predictable, its impossible to turn away. And also the way that its set over one night is somehow mesmerising. I think most people would like this film but its going to really touch the people who have loved & lost, been very low, had family issues, drug problems or a combination of these. I cannot recommend this one highly enough, it changed my life knowing that people out there understand this stuff and can write about it so beautifully x.
Psychobitch (2019)
Brilliant film with a bit of (almost) everything
This is a fabulous new film which can't fail to disappoint if you have ever had young love and/or had trouble in deciding which life to lead! Great acting & directing, although some of the camerawork is a bit dodgy. One of the best things about this film is it's got an acceptable run time. Other films I've seen with similar storylines are too short & often only 80mins or so, but this one is 30mins more giving plenty of time to explore the lives of the main characters and let the viewers settle in. The soundtrack is good too and tracks mostly fall at the correct place. Well worth a watch, highly recommended.
This Year's Love (1999)
One of the best films in the world
How can there be a better film, in this genre anyway.
Cast fitting their roles 10/10
Directing 10/10
Soundtrack 10/10
Music suiting the scenes 10/10
Storyline 10/10
Uniqueness 10/10
Acting quality 10/10
Like real life 10/10
There is not one second of this film that's dull. It rolls on like an express train. It's funny, clever, adresses very real life situations without going over the top so it's kept 100% believeable. Just shows how film making should be done.
Guest House Paradiso (1999)
What have they created?
Can't really believe I'm saying this as one of the biggest Bottom fans on the planet but this has to be one of the worst films ever made! Virtually every aspect of it is bad, the acting, directing, dialogue, sound effects, lighting, in fact i can't think of anything to compliment. I am staggered that two legends of comedy could write something so unwatchable. The only people i can imagine who could like this are the people who think things like Deadpool are funny and have a plot. For anyone with a normal mind & used to actual comedy i advise stay well clear.
Johnny Marr & Maxine Peake: The Priest (2017)
Stunning music video
Beautifully moving short music video about a young girl (16-18?) who struggles with life on the streets. This tune doesn't seem to be available anywhere except this video, no mention of it when looking through jonny's discography.
DOSED (2019)
***Everyone needs to watch this***
Truly stunning documentary, a real eye opener to addiction & recovery. I'm so glad to see this kind of treatment being used & gaining more publicity.
