Broadchurch (2013)
Went downhill after season 1
Had real high hopes for this as so many people were raving about if when it was being shown on TV but I'm not sure why all the rave reviews now.
The first season was really good and almost like a mini series as it ended with Joe confessing to murder. That is why I have given it a 5 star rating
I had hoped with season 2, that it would be simple sentancing for Joe and then a new murder case but sadly that isn't wasn't case.
Managed to watch the first 3 episodes of season 2 but it really put me off from watching the rest as the story just seemed to go downhill.
Joe pled not guilty so the case went to full criminal court case. There seemed to be so much lambasting of the police and that due to multiple failures from them, that is why Joe pled not guilty.
The discrepancies started showing up more in season 2.
The defence tried to make out without any evidence other than CCTV that DS Miller was having an affair with DI Hardy because having found out that her husband Joe was the murderer, she then sought solace in the arms of another man when infact she just wanted to talk with him for a couple of hours. There was no evidence of her having an affair but because she was alone in DI Hardys hotel room with him, they obviously were having an affair or that is what the defence tried to say.
DI Hardy was running his own secret witness protection service which for me wasn't believable at all.
A fully taped and videod interview with Joe, where he confessed to murder but at no time did he show that the confession had been coerced from him beforehand which his defense claimed.
All the Light We Cannot See (2023)
Really good series
Sadly some of the bad reviews for this seemed to think that as it is a WW2 storyline then it has to be historically accurate but there are plenty of films, series and books with a WW2 storyline that are just great works of fiction.
Aria Loberti is really excellent in this and I'm glad that Netflix took the time to find someone who is blind as for me it shows in Aria's acting. Her acting is brilliant and evenmoreso when you consider that this series was her debut.
I will also add that I have never read the book so for me I had nothing to compare the series to. I might though read the book now.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
I don't understand the hate for this
Admittedly it wasn't perfect and there is room for improvement but I really did enjoy this.
It isn't easy find good sci-fi films so I was surprised at how well put together this is. I didn't even know about the hate towards Zack Snyder so I didn't start watching this expecting it go be like some of his previous film that some other reviewers thought were bad.
There is plenty of action with a definate likeness to Star Wars and with a good storyline to it too.
The plot of rebels coming together to save a planet is a familiar plot but there was enough added into the plot so it wasn't a remake of Star Wars or Magnificent Seven.
Elektra (2005)
Really enjoyed it
I watched this in the cinema in 2005 and 18 years on I still really enjoyed it. It is before alot of the well known marvel films like Iron Man which is why some people might not have enjoyed it so much but for me it is really good. Maybe it was there are less special effects in this, so less big explosions which the more recent Marvel films are known for.
The storyline again for me is different to the more recent Marvel films but it still has alot of action, sword fighting and suspense where eventually good wins over evil and Elektra wins for the good side.
Jennifer Garner played Elektra well as she did in Daredevil which I really enjoyed too.
The Librarians (2014)
If I could have rated it 0 I would have
If you are looking for a series that is full of action, then this isn't it. I describe series like this as being disneyed as for a 12 rated series there was very little action, just seemed to be a few punches thrown about and that is it and very little threat of danger
The storyline is very weak and full of stereotypes. We managed to watch the first 3 episodes kind of okish but episode 4 which was a Christmas one really ended up with us wanting to claw out our eyes and brains as it was full of typical British stereotypes of how Americans think we British are. The classic Christmas storyline of it heavily snowing in London and a cockney londoner in the soup kitchen oh and the writers had thrown into the storyline that Santa Claus does really exist.
Reading other reviews and others are saying that to enjoy this series, you need to watch the films first has me wondering if the films are going to be just the same.
Curse of the Witching Tree (2015)
It was awful
The storyline was ok but it was formulaic like so many other ghost films. The acting seemed wooden, there was far too much awful music playing across most of the film which was not needed at all and the editing seemed to make the film pause at the wrong moments.
In my view it was a film made to a small budget that was so small that special effects were not affordable although they were much needed.
I have watched plenty of really good ghost films and some have been films made on a smaller budget but this definitely wasn't one of them.
It could have been another good British ghost film but there are many things that let it down.
Sophie: A Murder in West Cork (2021)
A lot of hearsay
This was mind numbingly slow. Out of the 3 episodes, the last 2 seemed to focus on a lot of conjecture and hearsay because one man was considered odd so he must have been the murderer. When in fact there was no physical evidence as due to police incompetence all the dna evidence had been lost which included blood evidence from the murderer but nothing much was said about the police incompetence. There was only one suspect in the eyes of the police and they never considered anyone else eventhough the only evidence against the only suspect was circumstantial. The police from day one virtually, got their teeth into the only suspect even without evidence and never considered to search for other suspects, which without any physical evidence against the one suspect, should have happened. There were most likely other potential lines of enquiry but they were not investigated and some witnesses were not interviewed until much later, which wasn't really focused on in the series.
The police admitted that they had made mistakes but they just almost seemed to laugh it off as nothing, when that DNA evidence, now with modern testing techniques could have categorically identified the murderer.
The Haunting of Margam Castle (2020)
Appalling
Sadly I wasted about 60 minutes of my life watching this disaster of a film and I couldn't even watch it to the end as it was so bad. The supposed horror scary bits were not scary at all and didnt make me jump like a really good ghost story will do
