Trendy (2017)
Great film that flew under the radar
I saw Trendy at Raindance Film Festival in 2017, and again last night. Even better on second watch. Great film. Excellent performances by Haluk Bilginer and Lachlan Nieboer. The estate agent is awesome too. Very realistic and gripping depictions of East London's characters. After living there for twenty years, I felt the film completely captured the feeling of walking in those streets.
The directing is awesome. Very oppressive, just like what the main character experiences. Just why the film didn't get released more widely escapes me. It flew under the radar while it's much better than most films I watch in cinemas.
Swallow (2019)
Intriguing but ultimately disappointing
An interesting take on a weird condition, Swallow is well-crafted, very captivating film. Yet it feels like it lacks depth, like it lacks a real vision of the world and the characters at its core beyond its aesthetic qualities.
A film worth watching but in my opinion it is a bit vacuous.
Ô Rûshî! (2017)
Half and half
Bits of this were very funny, but overall I felt a lack of balance in the narrative. As though the filmmakers weren't really sure what they were trying to make. A comedy? A drama? An absurdist tale? There are very good scenes, strong pieces of performance and directing but it feels a little too flimsy for my taste. Not a bad film, but not a great film either.
