Sembène: The Making of African Cinema (1994)
Excellent Commentary on the life of this great Film maker.
For those interested in the life of Sembene and his works (Borom Sarret, Xala, Moolaade etc) then this documentary is for you. The film makers capture the history, the struggle and the art of this great man and attempt to create a full and detailed portrayal of his works whilst explaining the troubles in Africa under white rule and the way in which he felt it necessary to allow the Black African people to finally have a voice, through the medium of film.. A must for any Third Cinema or African Cinema enthusiast. Sadly this work is not the easiest to come by and, as far as I know, is not available on DVD but if you can track down a copy, try to do so.
Dead on Time (1999)
Great Short
A very witty, clever, and interesting short, sums up everyone's obsession with the Millenium. Brilliant, worth seeing if you can find it, usually turns up on Film Four Shorts evenings, or possibly on BBC 2. (Nichola Stapleton is briliant, as per usual!!)
Long Time Dead (2002)
Lovely Lara
I was lucky enough to catch a preview screening of this back in June 2000, and I will say that it is actually very good. Recent British Horrors haven't really been up to scratch, but this provides everything you need for a good time, and a good scare. Also, it stars the lovely Lara Belmont, and the talented Lukas Haas, so that makes it worth watching anyway!! I rated it 7 and reccommend it to any scare fan.
Happy Birthday to Me (1981)
See it to believe it!!
This has to be the most unintentionally funny film I have ever seen. I cannot believe there is not a goofs list for this film, when it contains the worst bit of Continuity EVER!! Imagine the scene, the young star has a flashback, her and her mother are trapped on an opening bridge. As it opens, the car falls, spins 180 degrees and lands roof first in the water. The Director, Editor, whoever, obviously loved this stunt as we see it 4 times, in slo mo, from 4 different angles, then, as a climax to her flashback we see it one more time, this time, however, the car falls into the water Roof UP!!! Who was editing this thing?? Anyways, its worth a look for its laughs, and has a few decent effects too, including a kebab skewer through the head. Watch it, you may actually like it!!
