Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Many air to the top
Well, what can you say about "Rebel Moon"... Difficult... Because the movie is relatively entertaining and amusing, but by no means the smash hit you'd expect when Zack Snyder is at the helm.
The story and everything around it is not very original. In fact, the screenwriters and Snyder have brazenly and cheekily borrowed from numerous SF and fantasy originals and even the 7 Ronins. And they don't even conceal it. Which of course makes everything somewhat predictable. But on the other hand: well stolen is half the battle. And it's still fun to watch.
The movie is peppered with numerous stars, but (if you disregard Anthony Hopkins as Jimmy's voice) not stars of the absolute top league. More like the second division. Nonetheless, this second guard does their job quite well, even if they perhaps take themselves a little too seriously.
So far, the movie has earned a 6 thanks to its entertainment value. I think that with the various loose ends that the first part left behind, there is still a lot to get out of the second part. There is certainly enough air to the top. Let's give it a second chance. But this second chance has to work....
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023)
Bad Cast, worse Plot, cruelly amateurish
If there were at least a few more monsters...
Pretty much the worst series in the world. Hardly any monsters, but self-absorbed, pompous and stupid actors and characters. The plots are long-winded and boring and have been specially developed for simple-minded viewers. The overblown dialog is downright embarrassingly trivial and hollow and the actors are for the most part completely talentless (in Germany wie say "talent-resistant")
Whoever at Apple picked up this series must be deaf and blind....
Even old rattlesnake Russell can't save the series. And he shouldn't have given himself up for it either. He's better than that.
Belascoarán, PI (2022)
I felt well entertained
My first thought: Oh dear, a crime series from Mexico. And then I was pleasantly surprised. Exciting, with the right pinch of humor and imaginative. And with really good actors.
Yes, you can also produce good series away from Hollywood. At least under the aegis of Netflix. As already proven by Narcos.
Hector Belascoaran Shayne, a well-heeled engineer, quits his job, leaves his wife and tries his hand at private investigation. And his first case is a vicious wife-killer. Not quite new the story of the first episode, but well interpreted.
The atmosphere of the series, set in the 1970s, is also appealing.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
Puh, different...
Yes, it's true: the claptrap in the series takes up too much space. I actually think it's good when a superhero squad doesn't take itself so seriously. If only to avoid the escapism that many fans of such series feel.
But here it's just too much. But there were two reasons why I still enjoyed watching the series: 1. Tatiana Maslany is really cute when she's not She-Hulk and 2. Because of Daredevil (Charlie Cox). I think a lot of people watched the show because of Daredevil, who we all wish back in a series of his own.
Let's hope that the series finale will be something more. And that from the second season everything is a little longer, less ridiculous and more exciting.
House of the Dragon (2022)
As good as game of thrones.
As good as game of thrones.
If you like Game of thrones, you'll be happy with House of Dragon. The only difference is the less explicit portrayal of sexuality, which is rather good for the series.
You have to keep in mind that this is the first season of House of Dragon and the characters have to develop first. Still, the time jumps within the first season were a bit rough. You had just gotten used to the stars, and now you have to tick them off again. That wasn't so nice. But that's actually the only serious criticism. Let's hope that season 2 will bring more temporal peace.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to the season finale.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
4 episodes to subjugate them, after that it will be good
4 Epsiodes to find them,
4 Episodes to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land from Amazon where the Shadows lie. And then it finally gets better.
I was disappointed at first. Too corny, overly pathetic and Galadriel too clinically perfect. But from episode to episode the series got better. It eventually becomes dirtier and more honest. Especially the last 3 were really good and the revelation of Sauron really exciting and interesting. Although you suspect who it is early on. Only one does not want to admit it....
I would have given 10 points if it had been like this from the beginning.
Andor (2022)
One of the better series
No lightsabers, no pompous Jedi knights, no embarrassing Darth Vader and especially no ridiculous baby Yoda. Andor is raw, dirty, honest and brutal and inconvenient and that's why it's so good. The titular character Cassian Andor is no hero. Andor is a simple man who is primarily concerned only with his own advantage. Almost by accident, he stumbles into what is to go down in history as the Rebel Alliance in the "Star Wars" universe.
The only thing I don't like (in any of the new Star Wars or Marvel series) is that the episodes are far too short.
The action is a little lacking, but this may be due to the short episode.
With skarsgard and Diego Luna very well cast and also the rest of the cast can convince.
Bosch: Legacy (2022)
Main story top, side story boring and superfluous
Bosch was good. The only thing that bothered me was that his daughter took up so much space. Something that is now even more pronounced and disturbing in "Bosch Legacy". That's why I only gave it 7 stars this time.
The Crime of the Century (2021)
He who does not know the truth is merely a fool...
...But he who knows it and calls it a lie is a criminal. (Bertolt Brecht)
The documentary is certainly one of the best of the last decades. But it also weighs heavily on one. Because the truth is always hard to bear. Especially when you see that those who should be there for the people and protect them, such as doctors or the Ministry of Justice, are involved. This is a must see documentary.
Peacemaker (2022)
funny, violent, riotous and rough
Adult entertainment, in the style of "Boys", funny, violent, riotous and rough. I love it, "Boys" is of course a bit better and more perfect (because of Karl Urban alone), but it comes close. It worth. An entertaining fun.
Moon Knight (2022)
Good, but could be even better
The approach is good, but Marc Spector's dissociative identity disorder is given too much space, especially for those familiar with the subject matter. Still entertaining and well cast with Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke (I don't think you can miscast them, they are too good actors). But there is room for improvement, both in terms of plot and characters.
Halo (2022)
i am torn
As a gamer I'm disappointed, but as a tv-series addict I feel relatively well entertained. Okay, sometimes too much chatter and too little action, but nice costumes, pretty good CGI and interesting characters. The latter is still expandable. Since there's a lot of garbage on TV at the moment, I'm very grateful when something is halfway good.
Slow Horses (2022)
Antiheros and Failures
It's been a long time since i've had this much fun with an agent series. Antiheroes and failures who become silent heroes are a proven and still appealing means for a good series story. Especially when they don't take themselves too seriously. I love it.
Daredevil (2015)
Let daredevil rise again
After Spider-Man: No way home and Hawkeye, I had to watch Daredevil again. And I have to say: despite the weaknesses of the 2nd season, this was one of Marvel's better series. I hope there is a revival on Disney+.
The Witcher (2019)
Good, keep it up
The series that surprised me the most in a positive way. Normally game adaptations are always a total flop. But "The Witcher" entertains me, the action is good without overdoing it, the storyline is okay, the actors are very good and the humor is appealing. After Boys and Dexter: New Blood, one of the best series of the last two years.
Invasion (2021)
Good idea, too poorly implemented.
Good idea, too poorly implemented. That really says it all. It takes a long time, too long, until the aliens finally appear. On the one hand, the film dwells too much on trifles, on the other hand, it often remains too superficial. You also constantly have the feeling that the film is missing something. One could have made more out of the topic, above all more entertainment.
Hawkeye (2021)
Please bring Thanos back :)
After the last three series (Falcon/Wintersoldier, Loki and What if) underperformed, Hawkeye is almost good. Almost good. I liked the references to Daredevil and the humor. Less clear and good I found the storyline and the chatter in between. And that once again a really potent antagonist is missing. It is tediously boring to see the heroes win easily. I wish Thanos would come back. Hm, maybe that would be something for Disney+: A series about and with Thanos. Or a 4th season of Daredevil.
Barbarians (2020)
Better than
A thousand times better than the drippingly pathetic and boring "The last Kingdom"...
