The Girl Who Got Away (2021)
Excellent Start to Sad Confusing Ending
The first 75% of the film is amazing. There's good clever story telling and awesome actors (minus the character who manages the adoption agency in the beginning and end of the film; his acting is flat as a half drank soda, left in the sun for three days).
The movie is well-told and, at first (oh boy, at first), has a really good couple of plot twists. But, then ...we start to get into the last 25 to 30% or so of the film... and oh boy, it's so sad and frustrating to see this poor animal die a slow and painful death. All of sudden you'll find yourself asking, "what is going on here?", "why would she do that?", "why would this happen?", "why would he do this?"
The film makes the same mistake Walking Dead made when it had characters killed off no one wanted to see die ... just for shock value. It has plot points come up that are never really revisited or explained. The ending you have to look up ... but not in that awe inspiring way that makes you wish you were smart enough to get it, or maybe you missed some important plot point. No, this makes you irritated and angry when you read the ending online and say..."what!? That was what happened!?...But why?! How was I supposed to know that!?"
Nothing hurts more than having a great film most of the way through come crumbling down to a sad, pitiful, nonsensical mess. Neil Breen said once when asked what his films mean, "it's up to the viewer." He was mocked for that. I mock the end of this film for the exact same reason; it's a cop out. Bad writing.
Chasing the Devil (2014)
Poor Writing Ruined This Film
Without giving away the obvious ending, the acting is good; however, this film is riddled with ridiculous writing that shows the characters as completely inept making the stupidest decisions. It's too much to suspend disbelief. They don't really seem to have a goal in mind other than to find out what the antagonist is trying to do. They never stop to think of a way to defend themselves, so the entity just kicks their rear ends the entire time. They split up at times which is really stupid and gives the movie a Scooby Doo cartoon feel. Some unintentionally silly scenes toward the end just make it feel like a cartoon in general. This wasnt even a fresh idea at the time, but still could have been better executed.
The Black Waters of Echo's Pond (2009)
Awful
Only a few minutes in and the writing is absolute trash. I can't for the life of me believe that Danielle Harris and the actor from Terminator 2 (T-1000) agreed to this. The story is cheap and unbelievably bad. The characters engage in unrealistic acts, while they have emotional outbursts that make the scenes come off as cheap daytime soap opera buffoonery. I literally cringe trying to watch this and have to look away. It's like seeing someone in high school trying to be cool in front of a large crowd and totally embarrass themself.
