Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Duty to Hope (2024)
Not a bad episode but when are they renaming svu the liv Benson show
This season of SVU hasn't been too bad compared to the last few seasons but the whole Liv Benson hero complex is getting tiresome now. Shes meant to be a captain now yet personally investigates every case and makes herself the centre point. I get Mariska hargitay is the longest serving cast member and a producer but it makes no sense her character doing everything she does. She'd be tied up in legislation and red tape. The episode itself was ok nothing special. Paint by numbers svu. There's a new high ranking DA to replace the chief of police, Mcgrath, as the shows pen pushing, heartless antagonist who's just interested in there career. It's tiresome now but of course Liv needs a bureaucratic self centred egotist to cross swords with, to highlight her almost angelic selfless character.
The Thick of It (2005)
Sharp witty comedy that still seems fresh today.
I've always been a fan of the thick of it. I know the camera work annoys soke people but once you get past it your left with a sharp witty original comedy. The only reason I marked it an 8 and not a 10 is because we lose the brilliant Hugh Abbott character as the focal point due to the actors very real and troubling crimes in real life. His replacement is rebecca fronts character who just doesn't hold as much gravitas. On the plus side malcolm tucker does become more the focal point from that point on. It has a wide range of different characters, all odious and snivelling in there own particular ways which is everything you'd expect from modern politicians.
The Rookie (2018)
A once good show thats more than jumped the shark
I really enjoyed the first 2 seasons of the rookie. An enjoyable show about an ageing rookie and his younger counterparts, who are coming to terms with being on real life patrol in LA and learning lessons daily. OK, it could be abit cringe at times but overall a fun show. Then, around season 3 it starts to fall off a cliff. Once it hits season 4 it's just insane. Apparently in LA there's no detectives as the patrol officers just decide to solve every case on their own. From murders to terrorism to going into another country to free a kidnapped colleague. They just do everything themselves. There is no protocol apparently. Nolan, the main protagonist of the show was a likeable character but hes too much by season 4. Mr moral highground. I still watch the show but mainly to laugh at how incredibley stupid its become.
Quadrophenia (1979)
Enjoyable but just abit meh.
I first watched quadrophenia with some mates in my late teens because it was a cool cult classic with great music by the who...20 years later I've just rewatched it and just found it all abit meh really. Maybe the characters were more relatable first time around and I knew less about the who than I do now, they generally seem like arrogant old men now lol.
Overall I still like the characters but I just found the film meanders along at times. There's no real deep story. Phil daniels it excellent as Jimmy but the character itself is just abit whiny. His parents don't understand him (join the club mate), they aren't terrible people though, infact they seems decent hardworking parents, the girl he fancies strings him along (once again, join the club mate), and to be honest she is alot more attractive than him. He hates his job, like millions of others, which hardly seems the most taxing of jobs. Hes just overall disillusioned with life and seems to think he's owed. The film culminates with him turning his back on friends and family and his job only to discover the ultra cool mod, ace (played by sting), works as a bellboy in a hotel. This seems to break his heart more than the girl he's besotted by going with his mate. It's just a bit odd..how did he think Ace could afford the best clothes and the best moped. He works like everyone else.
Like I said, it's still an enjoyable watch but watching it through older eyes it's a lot less cool than I remember and just abit meh.
The Rookie: Five Minutes (2021)
Are there no other cops in LA
As much as I enjoy the rookie it's really jumping the shark. A beautiful world renowned thief shows up in town and is very forthcoming with the cops that she's guilty of all the suspected thefts shes commited, and that she's there to commit another. Of course the only police she seems to encounter is Nolan, Chen and the rest of the gang, who apparently are the only police officers in LA. Do detectives not do any work? If an international thief is in town would you really entrust her capture to some beat cops...even at roll call its the same 4 or 5 of them that talk. The other officers stand in the background like mute simpletons. God they must all hate Nolan. Its becoming so bad its actually funny.
The Big Bang Theory (2007)
Great if you enjoy comedies with unlikeable characters
The big bang theory isn't a terrible show by any means. Infact i would say the first 4 season are quite good. My main issues is why are we meant to root any of these characters. Understandably they had to develop more characters and character arcs as its success and fan base grew. Yet the longer it goes on the more unlikeable they all become.
Penny. Penny is probably the most likeable of all the characters, shes the 1 I least have any issues with apart from the fact its weird she would waste so much time with the rest of them.
Sheldon. Arguably the star of the show. Probably the character I like most out of them all after penny. Hes meant to be annoying, hes meant to be socially awkward, hes meant to be a bit of an ass at times/most of the time.
Leonard. A man who just whines constantly. He grew up with a cold unloving mother and then gets landed with Sheldon. You can't understand his negativity and moaning at times but then he ends up with a girl like penny and still moan and whines constantly.
Howard. A creepy little sex obsessed man in the earlier seasons who actually makes you laugh as much as any other character then falls for the awful bernadette and becomes a hen pecked man scared to upset his wife.
Raj. So shy he can't even talk to women at first unless drunk, then overcomes his affliction and still can't get a woman. Understandably because when he does get a girlfriend he usually acts weird. Even the writers dont seem to like him, ending the show with him as the only main character not in a relationship.
Amy. Obsessed with Sheldon, just as weird as him when she first comes in. Then they try make out she's normal and puts up with Sheldon because of her love. Just overall a meh character.
Bernadette. Hands down the most unlikeable of all the characters. A bully who has no issue berating any of her friends. She just seems a nasty piece of work.
Stuart. Loser.
PhoneShop (2009)
A very underrated comedy
Every now and then a comedy goes under the radar and doesn't get the credit it deserves. Phoneshop falls under that category. It might not be the greatest comedy ever but its very good. The main cast are all superb and all have great timing. A lot of the scenes are ad libbed which is even more of a testament to how good the comedy acting is, especially tom bennett who plays Christopher who jails a very awkward line. Ashley and jerwayne are played to perfection as 2 over confident phones salesman. Some people might not like the Razz Prince character but I think kayvan novak nails it. As said in other reviews this might not translate as well to audiences outside the UK but I personally think its superb.
