What Lies Below (2020)
Would have made an excellent short film
Unfortunately the casting really impacted the immersion from the get go, the mother and daughter looking much closer to sisters was distracting.
This could have been forgiven but Horvath's attempt at sounding like a 16 year old, made me cringe.
*Spoiler ahead*
The plot idea itself, is a classic. I wish it leaned into the cosmic horror elements of creepy fish men in a small town, secretly breeding the locals.
Either make it creepy a dungeon horror or make it a Sci Fi horror, don't try and do both in this instance.
The clashing imagery, of a dirty basement tank and the futuristic pod at the end, felt like it was 2 different movie concepts rushed into one.
I would rare it a 4.5 if I could, it could have been better but I was able to finish it and I wouldn't stop anyone from giving it a go.
In the Earth (2021)
Good acting, bad plot.
Great idea, executed poorly.
I'd like to think the jarring and choppy way the dialogue was written, was intentional, giving the first half of the film an uncomfortable thriller air about it.
We were totally on-board with this weird ride, with the proviso that there would actually be some pay off at the end, where unfortunately there was not.
Mild spoilers:
Like many others have said, the film goes downhill once the pair escape their tormentor. The use of lights and sound could have been effective but they were over used, making it impossible for most, to actually look at the screen for a larger portion of the 3rd act. Then there is simply no ending, with so much build up, this just leaves you feeling unsatisfied.
The Little Death (2014)
Hidden Aussie Gem.
This movie was so pleasantly unexpected. It did not go where I expected it to and it was, just simply, good.
